Dear NPPN,

Hope you have the time to look at the reports from the International Prayer Leaders Consultation that took place in South Africa (#1 and #2) - Much news and much good news!  Many of the same points of progress were identified at this summer's Citywide Prayer Leaders Consultation in New York City ... Our God is at work both in and through the Holy Spirit's prayer movement.

May I request your prayers for my trip to Port Harcourt, Nigeria (January 1 - 11, 2003)? I have been given the honor of leading workshops on networking Pastors and prayer (see below), will preach on Sunday the 5th, and hope to connect with several Nigerian leaders.

For those who will pray:
-Give thanks;  this opportunity is a blessing for the NPPN as well as for me
-Thank the Lord for a faithful donor who has paid for the air fare
-Pray for safe, smooth (:>), healthy travel
    -Divine appointments

My thanks and God's blessings,

Pastor Phil

GLOBAL PRAYERQUAKE 2003
Theme:
The Unstoppable Church
Opening Session: Sunday 5/1/03 by 3.00pm
Venue: Alfred Diete Spiff Sports Complex (Civic Centre), Moscow road, Port Harcourt.
Dates: Sunday 5/1/03 - Friday 10/1/03

The Lord gave a ten-year ultimatum for the face of Africa to change. As we come face to face with the reality of how slow any form of spiritual change and reformation is taking place in the African church and political scene compared to the uncompromising speed at which time flies, we are forced to increase our prayer momentum. The task of righting on our knees the wrongs of several centuries in a short time must be handled with the seriousness, passion and desperation it deserves.

Global Prayerquake is aimed at shaking the seemingly unshakable evil gates, foundations and traditions and open the gates of righteousness for the King of glory to come in.

We shall also stir ourselves up as we closely examine the characteristics of the church that would defy all odds to comply with God's demands on her; then commit to seeing this church born on every continent starting from where we are. It is a tough task looking at the present indescribable state of things. But the lot has fallen on our generation to do it. So, we shall do it.

Yours for His kingdom,
Rev. Mosy U. Madugba, For the Organising Team

1.    SOUTH AFRICA:
    International Prayer Leaders Consultation

>From: John Robb <john_robb@wvi.org>

Thanks so much for your prayers for the recent International Prayer Leaders Consultation. Also I am also grateful for your patience in waiting for this report. We were simply thrilled and blessed by what the Lord did during the event. Almost 300 took part, coming from all 15 world regions, making it probably the most diverse prayer leaders' event ever. (We had expected well over 300 but unfortunately some had to cancel at the last minute due to health or financial reasons.) The renewing and sometimes electrifying presence of God through the inspiring times of worship and prayer together made it a life-changing experience for many. A key part of the consultation's dynamic atmosphere were the on-site intercessors led by Bobbye Byerly who prayed 24 hours a day in three hour shifts and also ministered wonderfully to the prayer leaders who joined them and shared special needs with them. The South African administrators led by Bennie Mostert did a masterful job as did the worship team that led us so sensitively and beautifully.

We made significant progress in all our objectives for the consultation: connecting prayer networks towards the formation of a global prayer network, coordinating prayer for common global concerns, building relationships between leaders, planning for future events such as an International Prayer Assembly and a Global Concert of Prayer, and diversifying the leadership of the International Prayer Council. I thought you would like to read what the participants felt were highlights of our time together in their own words:

·     Presentations from Islamic world and persecuted church.
·     Emphasis on youth and children and seeing the youth released.
·     Focus on 10/40 Window (where majority of lost and poorest of poor live).
·     Panoramic view of current church situation on global scale. Extremely useful information.  Regional reports.
·     Face to face opportunity to meet the suffering church. We will never be the same.
·     Sense of unity and vision for a global network.
·     Networking with other delegates. Links that were made between various ministries and ministry leaders. Key connections and reconnections with
others. Amazing connections for future networking.
·     A very memorable and in my eyes historic event.
·     Spectacular ?will add enormous thrust to global transformation in Christ Jesus.
·     Rich worship like a foretaste of heaven.
·     Enhancement of women in ministry.
·     Learned so much. Ideas for pioneering networks in countries without a national prayer network.
·     Resource materials (especially videos) to use as tools.
·     Immediate prayer response at all times. Blessing of the ministry of the intercession team (20 intercessors who prayed in three hour shifts 24 hours a day).
·     Diverse range of people leading workshops and regional groups.
·     Lack of VIP status- appreciated availability of leaders to everyone.
·     Greatly encouraged and inspired to become aware of how great the movement of prayer around the globe has become and also the testimonies to God's answers to prayer.
·     My resolve for prayer was strengthened. Intensity of prayer was heightened. Concerns of prayer were deepened. Scope of prayer was widened. My heart for prayer was enlarged.
·     Have made up my mind to network with all prayer groups ? to get a National front to pray for Ghana to transform our Nation.
·     I am back to India with inspiration of encouraging others here to get into prayer networks and forming prayer cells.
·     Like a foretaste of heaven! So many different people from so many different nations?all together as one!
·     Key issue of globalization and international institutions affecting the nations.
·     Awareness of AIDS, persecution and poverty and increase of burden to pray with God's heart.
·     Beautiful place full of the presence of God. Good meals. Well arranged.
·     Amazing and inspiring.., the move of God for revival in the world.
·     Organization and facilitation of the consultation to the glory of God. We experienced the presence and work of the Holy Spirit. To God be the glory!

For me personally, the IPLC was a foretaste of the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, that great celebration at the end of time in which the redeemed in all their ethnic and cultural diversity will rejoice together around one Lord. As you can see, the Lord did "far more abundantly" than we organizers expected. We were thoroughly delighted with the outcomes, and the IPC leaders met afterwards to decide how to move forward based on the input of the participants. Please pray for the following:
1.    Development of effective mechanisms to stay in touch with the networks and to share global prayer concerns.
2.    The enlargement of the IPC and new leaders' willingness to proactively represent their regions and serve with the IPC.
3.    The planning of the next face to face gathering of the IPC leaders in Thailand in October, 2004.
4.    The arrangement of a Global Concert of Prayer by satellite probably in May 2005.
5.    The development of stronger regional and national prayer movements and the efforts of the IPLC participants as they work on this back in their countries.
6.    The efforts of our new theological task force as it works on guidelines and protocols for prayer networks to work together.

Thanks so much for partnering with us. Your prayers have been answered big time! Warmest greetings for the holidays, John Robb, Chairman, International Prayer Council

2.    GLOBAL Prayer Progress

>From: Friday Fax <FridayFax@bufton.net>

Prayer Explosion --
The following report of the astonishing development in prayer in recent years is an extract from a document produced during the International Prayer Leaders' Consultation held in Cape Town from 12th-17th November 2002:

"Prayer ministries began in a few nations in the 60s and 70s. In 1978, for example, Dennis Clark of Intercessors for Britain invited 30 intercessors from 11 nations to a week of prayer in Jerusalem. The International Fellowship of Intercessors grew out of that week, which later organised the historic International Prayer Assembly for World Evangelisation in Seoul, Korea in 1984. Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, sees that Assembly as the beginning of the modern global prayer movements. It set a number of ambitious targets, all of which have been reached or even exceeded. The global prayer net mobilised millions of intercessors to petition God for particular challenging situations. The following are some of the most significant answered prayers:

The fall of the Berlin Wall --
In 1983, Open Doors called for seven years of prayer for the fall of the Iron Curtain and Communism. Exactly seven years later, in December 1989, bulldozers started demolishing the wall.

Christians in Cambodia --
In 1992, the Government allowed Christians more religious freedom. That year, there were only 200 known Christians in the nation; today, there are 400,000.

The miracle of South Africa --
The first multiparty elections were held in previously racist South Africa in 1994. Around the world, people prayed that the expected bloodbath would not happen. Three 40-day fasts were held before the elections, which turned out to be the most peaceful democratic elections in Africa - an internationally recognised miracle.

Yugoslavia --
Intercessors in Yugoslavia united across denominational lines for five weeks of prayer. At the end of the time of intercession in 1995, the war in neighbouring Bosnia was ended, and the peace accord signed in Dayton and Paris.

New breakthroughs in religious blocks --
Beside completely new developments in the predominantly Islamic nations, churches in some Buddhist nations experienced explosive growth through the planting of large numbers of new churches, as in Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar and China. A team of intercessors traveled to the isolated Kingdom of Bhutan, and marched around one of the most famous Buddhist temples in Jericho style. Subsequent events were spectacular: the same night, the world famous 1,200-year-old Tiger's Lair convent burned to the ground; in the course of a few weeks, many Buddhists in a Tibetan village turned to Christ, including two Buddhist priests. The past 20 years have witnessed a spectacular change in the attitude of many Hindus to Christ; members of high-ranking castes and orthodox Brahmans are opening for Christ, and the 300 million Dalits have decided to switch religion - a truly phenomenal breakthrough and a huge challenge for the Church.

Prayer Trends --
The early 1990s saw new developments such as spiritual warfare. The 'Gideon's Army' congress gathered 300 prayer leaders in South Korea, and led to important reconciliation between Europeans and Africans. The concept of prayer for geographical areas (the 10-40 Window, the 40-70 Window and the Silk Road Project) again mobilised many in prayer.

In 1995, at the AD2000 Movement's GCOWE conference, a new movement of reconciliation and stellvertretenden Busse began. American representative Paul Cedar, for example, signed a document in which American Christians asked Christian leaders in other nations for forgiveness : "We confess our sins of omission, our arrogance, unnecessary national pride, unrighteous treatment of minority groups in our own nation, lack of sensitivity to other nations and cultures, inappropriate reliance in our own plans and technologies, unteachableness, extravagant use of God's resources for our own needs, and the fragmentation of the global Body of Christ. In true humility, we ask for forgiveness for the negative consequences of our actions. Will you forgive us?"

Seven weeks of prayer and reconciliation in Australia led to increased partnership between Aborigines and White Australians.

At the start of the 1990s, there were fewer than 100 known prayer chains around  the world; today, there are more than 4,000 places in which people pray around the clock. At the start of the 1980s, there were no national prayer movements; today, two decades later, more than half of all nations have a national prayer  movement in some form. The Internet provided the possibility to spread prayer information rapidly, which helped encourage the development of a global prayer network. Following the development of the African Intercessory Network, Houses of Prayer started in many African nations, beginning with Uganda and Nigeria.

Since 1994, Tom Hess organises the biannual All Nation Convocation in Jerusalem, as forerunner of the day in which all nations will come to Jerusalem to worship the King. A number of 24-hour prayer movements started: Prayer Walls, Neighbourhood Prayer Groups, Lighthouses, International House of Prayer. The number of people fasting for long periods also increased markedly. At the start of the 90s, less than 1,000 people were known to have ever fasted for 40 days; there are now several hundred thousand. Prayer marches, prayer journeys, Jesus Marches and other forms taking prayer out of the church into the streets grew in acceptance. Prayer evangelisation, prayer for transformation, 24-7 Prayer which started in England in 1999 and spread to sixty nations, The Call, a movement which brings young people together for prayer and international prayer initiatives such as 30 Days of Prayer for the Islamic World, One Billion Hours of Prayer for the Buddhist World, Pastors Prayer Summits, Prayer Concerts and prayer outreaches in emergency zones and the growing link between prayer and church planting show that God is performing a global miracle, forming a truly exploding global prayer movement."

4.    ASIA: Summit On The 10/40 Window

>From: Window International Network <win@win1040.com>

You’re invited to join us for the Asian Summit on the 10/40 Window.

We are currently working with pastors and ministry leaders in Indonesia to plan our seventh international training conference to impact the nations of the 10/40 Window with the Gospel. Mark your calendars now for the Asian Summit on the 10/40 Window to be held in Indonesia May 15 through May 22, 2003. We will be holding an in-depth training institute that can transform our beloved 10/40 Window.

We are planning to arrive in Indonesia on the 15th of May and join tens of thousands of Indonesians for their National Day of Prayer in Jakarta. We will then fly to Bali on the morning of the 17th of May to begin the training institute. The training will also include a prayer journey in Bali.

This year we are combining the Praying with Power Conference and an expanded Women’s Summit into the Asian Summit on the 10/40 Window. We will also hold workshops that are specifically for women called to minister in the 10/40 Window.

The Asian Summit on the 10/40 Window will bring together ministries, networks of prayer, and intercessors to develop prayer leaders to effectively inform, equip, and mobilize churches, ministries, and individuals to transform the 10/40 Window through the power of prayer.

For more information, please contact Cynthia Johnson, at cjohnson@win1040.com or call her at 1-719-522-1040.

5.    CHINA ... EL SALVADOR ...

>From: Friday Fax <FridayFax@bufton.net>

CENTRAL CHINA: "Only 300 come for prayer"
"One of our workers took some Bibles to a house church in central China, and gave them to two new believers, Lily and Zhang, sisters who had been saved that day in the house church," reports Open Doors' Pierre Tschanz. "Around two years later, another member of our staff was in the same town, and met Lily and Zhang. He wanted to know what they had done since becoming Christians. Ashamed, the two girls blushed and bowed their heads, as though it were an exam. "We planted churches," they said. "How many?" The girls looked at each other cautiously: "only 29." Astonished, the Open Doors representative asked how many members the churches have. "In the smallest, only 300 come for prayer," they said humbly, "and in the largest, no more than 5,000".
From 10,000 to 300,000 members in three years "Such reports may seem unbelievable, but in Open Doors, we regularly hear such reports," says Tschanz. "A missionary in southern Henan province was active in a house church movement with 10,000 members. He was sent to Singapore for training for three years; when he returned, his movement had multiplied 30-fold to 300,000 members. We estimate that there are 10,000 new believers in China every day."

EL SALVADOR: prayer makes the most dangerous city harmless
"For a long time, San Marcos was El Salvador's most dangerous city," writes Amaury Braga, Latin American coordinator for the Dawn Movement. "With a crime rate of 80%, it was a center for drug dealers, witch doctors, kidnappers and alcoholics. All the banks closed because they had been raided so often. Around two years ago, God used a young Christian leader to start a strong prayer movement which mobilized almost all Christians to pray for the city, even though some denominations did not want to take part. Only one year later, the violent crime rate sank from 80% to 10%, and in January 2002, the national police declared San Marcos completely
free of violence. As a result, all Christian churches have grown rapidly--even those of denominations which did not join in prayer. Today, all Christians want to work together. The mayor and other city officials became Christians, and two banks have re-opened, even with cash machines. Two witch doctors who had declared war on the pastors and were not prepared to repent have died. Important drug dealers have turned to Christ and bars have closed. Instead of ceasing prayer, the Christians are now motivated to pray on until God's purposes with the city have been fulfilled," writes Braga, who just returned from the city.

6.    CYPRUS: New Arabic Web Site

>From: Terence Ascott <TerenceAscott@sat7.org>

It is with great pleasure that we announce the launch of SAT-7's new Arabic website, www.sat7.com.   After months of planning, building and testing, the site became live today!

This new website will be full of information about SAT-7, including detailed instructions on how to receive SAT-7's satellite signal and the important program and broadcast schedules.  This should help even more people receive the broadcasts.  Additionally, the website will feature interesting background information about the various shows, links to other Arabic/English Christian websites, and even a page through which viewers will be able to make on-line donations to the ministry.

This is an exciting development for many reasons.  Possibly the most important is that it provides us another medium through which we can interact with thousands of viewers.  They will be able to learn more about SAT-7, and we will be able to learn more about them.  The site will have a place for viewer feedback, giving viewers the opportunity to express their opinion and ask us questions about the programs and about the Christian Faith.  Despite the fact that only 1% of the Middle East has access to the world wide web (according to a June 2002 United Nations report) we have been receiving a good deal of e-mail correspondence from the region.  This site should increase the amount of those letters, and should continue to grow as more and more of our Middle Eastern and North African viewers cross the digital divide.

Another reason why SAT-7's new Arabic website is so exciting is that it will be global.  The reach of our satellite signal, while vast, is limited to Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.  But Arabic speakers can be found all over the world.  In the future we plan to stream many of our programs on the site, and therefore believe God will use the website to impact lives all over the globe.

Would you please join with us in praying that the new web site, www.sat7.com will have a great impact for Christ's Kingdom.  Please also pray that our talented group of web designers and developers will have wisdom on how to maintain this site, and that our counselors will have great insight on how to answer the e-mail correspondence that the site will generate.  We also ask you to consider making a special donation to help us cover the cost of this new venture.

Please tell your Arabic speaking friends about this site.  We know that God will use it in a mighty way to help many people grow in their walk with Him!  For more information contact Mr Younan Younan, IT Director (yyounan@sat7.org) or visit, http://www.sat7.org.

10.    E-Mail Conference Limks New Generation

>From: "ANS Story" <ANS_Story@sheperd.com>
>By Michael Ireland

PASADENA, CALIFORNIA  (ANS) -- A new E-mail Conference has been launched under the auspices of the Fuller School of World Missions, with the backing of the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization.

Known simply as "The Inquiry," the new conference is an official project of the Fuller School of World Mission and has the full support of the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization.

Already, e-mails welcoming participants and introducing them to the Evangelizing Our World Inquiry E-mail conference have been circulated.

"We intend for this email conference to be your link into what God is saying to his people around the world regarding the future of world evangelization," said Communications Director Rick Wood.

"We will be asking you to share your thoughts and insights concerning where we should go from here in world evangelization," said Wood.

The introductory message from organizers says: "You are receiving this email because we felt you would benefit from being a part of this new ministry. If for any reason you would not like to receive any further emails from us, then just go to the bottom of this email for instructions. But read on, I don't think you will want to miss what God is already doing through The Inquiry."

This new ministry called "The Inquiry" is not just an information gathering effort, said Wood. "It is a dynamic effort to catalyze the thinking of the Body of Christ worldwide into focused and concerted efforts toward world evangelization as we respond to what God is saying to us. It is also a leadership mobilization effort as a new generation of leaders is raised up to work together to provide access to the Gospel to every person on earth. The Inquiry is an official project of the Fuller School of World Mission and has the full support of the Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization," he said.

Wood said The Inquiry will sponsor focus groups of top Christian leaders in hundreds of cities across the world. "There have already been Inquiry events here in Pasadena, California, as well as in Argentina, Brazil, Korea, and China. We hope to have a report to you shortly on the most recent events in China. In each place where these Inquiry events have taken place great excitement and enthusiasm for the process has been the results. Often when these leaders go through this process it results in a strong desire to expand the process to include Inquiry events for leaders in many more cities in their country. It's like igniting a prairie fire of God's Spirit that takes on a life of its own."

"God has used inquiries and research efforts to enhance world evangelization ever since He sent two angels to facilitate the "resurrection focus group" of a few women who had come on the first Easter morning to find an empty tomb," said Wood.

"The facilitators posed the question: 'Why do you look for the living among the dead?' (Lk. 24:6). The results of this first world evangelization Inquiry focus group were:

• They reported to other followers of Jesus what they had learned.

• Peter was mobilized to find out for himself.

• The first world evangelization movement was launched."

"Dr. Luis Bush and I are very excited by how we see God using The Inquiry already and we look with great anticipation for how He will use this process to further the cause of World Evangelization," said Wood.

A SUMMARY OF THE EVANGELIZING OUR WORLD INQUIRY

"This Inquiry among influential Christian leaders in hundreds of cities worldwide is prompted by the challenge of the unfinished task of evangelization. As God's people look into to the twenty-first century, the question on the hearts of many is: 'Where do we go from here in world evangelization?' " said Wood.

Paul McKaughan, President of the Evangelical Fellowship of Mission Agencies (EFMA) notes: "I don't know of any time in my 35 years of mission experience that I have seen or felt mission executives more ready and willing to change and adapt. At the same time, I also don't know of any period in my career that there is less certainty about what changes to make.

"The future is uncertain. We know it will be greatly different but are not sure in which ways it will be different. We know that the patterns of the past are showing 'wear' and are in need of repair. In many ways our strategies and way of thinking do not fit our present reality very well. We know that they probably won't move us into the future God has for us. Yet the new paradigms that help us interpret and organize our strategies for the future have not become clear. We seem to be in a time of parenthesis between what God has blessed in the past and what it has yet to be made clear for the future."

Wood said: "This research project will, we pray, help gain the discernment and prayer needed for church/mission/ministry decision-making, by providing local insights into the questions and directions that relate to citywide, national, regional and global matters. We pray that information might mesh with relationships of the broader world community to foster increased evangelization to the end that there can be a significant advance in the Christian Movement over the next quarter century."

PURPOSE STATEMENT

The purpose of the "Evangelizing Our World Inquiry" is to enhance world evangelization in the twenty-first century by means of a quantitative and qualitative research Inquiry using a survey and focus group consultative process to gather, compile, organize and communicate the insights of Christian leaders throughout the world.

Survey objectives include:

• Listening to what God's people are saying.

• Discovering the city-wide, country-wide, continent-wide and global current realities, plus the obstacles and opportunities for evangelization.

• Collecting insights, beliefs, and attitudes about issues, leadership and structures related to world evangelization.

• Identifying a unifying paradigm of mission (a paradigm is an archetypical example, prototype or pattern that provides a model for a process).

Wood said the expected results involve enhancing world evangelization efforts in the twenty-first century by:

• Increased understanding of the issues affecting world evangelization by country, region, and global factors.

• Identifying what God is blessing in the city, country, and region.

• Identifying major obstacles to world evangelization.

• Identifying a possible unifying paradigm of mission.

• Communicating the insights of the Inquiry to Christian leaders worldwide.

• Cultivating prayer and praying about the matters that surfaced in the discussions.

• Mobilizing God's people to participate in evangelizing our world.

He said the spirit of the Inquiry would be:" Stirred by what God is doing through the Church around the world, yet resistant to evangelical self-confident triumphalism, this Inquiry seeks to hear what God is calling His people to do together in world evangelization," and that the scope would involve focus meetings in hundreds of cities around the world.

The project is expected to take 18 months to 2 years.

EVANGELIZING OUR WORLD PARTICIPANTS

Inquiry Director, Luis Bush said: "Along with many others, I have been involved in research projects with the desire of advancing world evangelization. I am conducting this Inquiry as part of my doctoral dissertation on the topic: 'Where do we go from here in world evangelization?'"

The project Advisor, Viggo Sogaard, lives in his native Denmark, and has given himself to and provided leadership for world evangelization for the last thirty years. He spends much of his time as a consultant to Christian groups around the world. He commutes periodically to the Fuller School of World Mission to teach on Research and Media in Church and Mission as he has done since 1983.

The Consultative Group, which will be engaged in consulting on content, process and results of survey is made up of Jonathon Bonk, David Howard, Peter Lee, Roberta King, Sherwood Lingenfelter, Paul McKaughan, John Langlois, Timothy Park, Paul Pierson, Wilbert Shenk, and Chuck Van Engen.

John Kyle, Paul McKaughan, Derk Van Konynenburg, Milan Telian will comprise the Accountability Group.

Ideally, Wood said, The Inquiry Leadership Group would be composed of 25 to 35 nationals including women and at least 5 pastors of major churches, at least 5 denominational/network leaders, at least 5 mission agency leaders, at least 5 younger emerging leaders, at least 5 women, at least 5 lay leaders, and at least 5 Christian service organizations.

Wood said the criteria for the selection of group participants based on local leadership may include items such as: Integrity - basic honesty and a sound character, necessary for credibility with followers; Spiritual authority - that anointing of God, which comes through gifted power, deep shaping experiences with God, and a godly character; Flexibility - adjusts to meet new opportunities; Learning Posture - overcomes the tendency to plateau. Daniel set an example as we find him still studying the Bible in his old age: Daniel 9; and Scope of influence - recognized by those of different groups within the city as a Christian leader who has exercised positive, persistent, specific influence for Christ within that city/nation/region.

11.    ZIMBABWE: Prayer Initiative Report

>From: John Robb <john_robb@wvi.org>

Thanks for your prayers for the Zimbabwe Prayer Initiative. Our team of 10 from eight countries met with Christian leaders who came from all 10
provinces and from the all the main traditions--evangelical, mainline Protestant and Catholic. Local leaders shared with us the deepening chasm into which the nation is falling: 70% unemployment, 140% inflation expected to go higher, crime increasing dramatically, brain drain through emigration, and most tragically the current famine which affects half of the nation's 14 million people. Many are trying to survive by foraging for wild roots after white commercial farmers were driven off the land by the government. Land reform was needed, all agree, but has been carried out in an unjust and catastrophic manner.

Our British team member, Brian Mills led us in a stirring period of deep repentance and reconciliation for the sins of his nation against Zimbabwe--greed, deceit, imperialism, racial superiority, and Freemasonry--all of which were epitomized in Cecil Rhodes, the flamboyant empire builder who seized and dominated much of this land and after whom it was originally named Rhodesia. The Spirit of God used this time of brokenness to move local leaders to face up to the tribal divisions that have characterized the churches. A number of tribal representatives came forward to ask forgiveness publicly of one another.

Our team also noticed the sad division among Christian leaders. There is a freely acknowledged tendency for many of them to do their own thing, often in competition with one another, and it is therefore difficult for them to come together in unity and humility to pray together and be a prophetic voice to the government. Only a few thus far have risen to this challenge. One local leader said, "The church is divided theologically, politically and useless for God's purpose."  No wonder the country is in the state it is!

Every part of the land, all 10 provinces, has been dedicated to various spirit forces in the past. The nation itself and its ruling political party has been offered to Mbuya Nehanda, a spirit of war and rainmaking (in spite of the drought that has contributed to the current famine). These kinds of covenants with false gods and the practice of divination and witchcraft that is still prevalent must be broken for healing and restoration to come. The Bible is clear that God hates this kind of thing and allows judgment to fall on nations that give themselves over to such idolatry and involvement with the powers of darkness. See Ezekiel 14 and the judgments of famine, disease, and sword, a passage that our team felt should be a wake-up call for the initiative participants. We all felt that situation will get worse unless there is real identificational repentance and coming together by the leaders of the church in the spirit of Joel 2:12-17.

Intercessors for Zimbabwe has declared a nationwide week of prayer and fasting December 16-23. Please continue to pray with our brothers and sisters in Christ for eager participation by all segments of the church and for the following:

1. Repentance for political, ethnic and church divisions with true reconciliation and united prayer as the result. Pray especially that the church leaders will throw off their independence and apathy to come together in real humility, unity and desperation to pray and stand together.

2. Repentance or removal of wicked, oppressive political leaders and replacement by just, honest, God-fearing ones. Openness by government leaders to the counsel of the church leadership.

3. Deliverance and healing from extreme lawlessness and economic breakdown that is imperilling the lives of millions. Timely provision of food relief for those who need it most. World Vision is deeply involved in the difficult and exhausting food delivery process.

4. Binding and expulsion of evil spiritual forces and breaking of covenants made with them by political and religious leaders.

My office is preparing a brief video to encourage prayer for Zimbabwe. If you would like a copy to use with a prayer group or church, please contact me at this address. Warm regards in Christ, John Robb, Chairman, International Prayer Council
