1.    CHENNAI PRAYER SUMMIT
>From: "Tim & Karol Svoboda" <tks61@yahoo.com>

Chennai Net started back in the mid 90’s after several of us as leaders divided the city into 12 zones. The idea was to have pastor fellowships in all 12 zones since the city is so big and one fellowship was just to difficult to operate. That is still going on. September 17 to 20th 2003 there will be the first Chennai Prayer Summit with about 60 to 100 pastors attending. It will be coordinated by Rev. Tom White the author of City Wide Prayer Movements. Jack Dennison is also involved in helping with the follow up from City Reach International. Chennai Net is slowly dissolving and we are hoping that in the Prayer Summit a new leadership team will emerge that can give overall direction to the effort of City Reaching for Chennai.

Prayer Summit in India are new and have successfully been held in Mumbai and Bhopal last year and now being held this year in Mumbai and Chennai. The networks in India are quite new and loose so things are developing and slowly moving forward.

We would appreciate your prayers for these prayer summits as we believe they are a key to help us come together in a much deeper way to build functional unity that can lead to corporate planning together in our cities.

Tim Svoboda

2.    SIERRA LEONE: MINISTERS PRAYER NETWORK

>From: OUTREACHNG@aol.com

Greetings in the precious Name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. This report covers events since February to August 2003.

DISCET was asked to coordinate the historic 1st Sierra Leone Ministers Prayer Network Conference from Wednesday 30th July to Saturday 2nd August 2003. At the invitation of the International Coordinator, Rev. Mosy Madugba of Nigeria, the DISCET Board under the chairmanship of Rev. D. H. Caulker agreed at its Sixteenth Meeting on 27th February 2003 that DISCET should coordinate and facilitate the activities for the Conference.

The remarkable conference started with a little over 600 participants on Wednesday 30th July, and then the momentum grew as by word of mouth others were told of the outstanding teachings and fellowship. By Saturday night the over 1000 seats provided were full to capacity. Many participants came in for the morning sessions starting at 9:00 a.m. and stayed on till the end of the evening sessions which sometimes went on till after 10:00 p.m. and on the last  after 11:00 p.m.

The comments on the conference were in superlatives. Many said it was the best conference they had ever attended. Many testified that they had learned things at the conference that they never knew before.

We are very grateful for the inspiring message given by the Founder and International Director of the Ministers Prayer Network, Rev. Mosy Madugba from Nigeria. We are also very grateful for the inspiring messages and ministries given by all the speakers, namely,
Rev. Mosy Madugba (Nigeria), Mrs Gloria Madugba (Nigeria), Rev. Sylvanus O. Ugwuibe (Nigeria),Rev. (Mrs) Christian Jireh (Nigeria) Rev. Francis Mambu (Sierra Leone) and Rev. Canon Modupe Taylor- Pearce (Sierra Leone).

Inauguration of the Sierra Ministers Prayer Network

The Sierra Leone Ministers Prayer Network was formerly launched on Saturday, August 2, 2003. At the follow up meeting held on Saturday 9th  August 2003, Ministers of various denominations eagerly attended and we agreed to meet once a month on the last Saturday of each month, starting on Saturday 27th September, at the Christians in Action Church, Pademba Road, from 2:00p.m.

Directory of Sierra Leone Ministers

A directory of Ministers  in Sierra Leone was formerly launched at the opening ceremony on Wednesday 30th July. It is expected to be finalized for sale by December 2003.

Indeed this visitation by God through His servants will be remembered throughout history. The team from Nigeria demonstrated the Two Hand Gospel Principle by caring for both the spiritual and physical needs of Sierra Leoneans through baggage of relief materials sent to us, which is yet to be distributed.

The Lord meet every financial need at every step at a time. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

3.    NPPN SUPPORTS NEW INITIATIVE

The Hope Network is Launched – Mobilizing the Church to respond to the HIV/AIDS global crisis.

--->NPPNote: Your participation in this initiative fights the crisis in Africa, gives your home team a global vision, and helps support the work of the NPPN!

The HIV/AIDS crisis has been described as the worst humanitarian crisis of our time and perhaps of history. The pandemic has been described by Nelson Mandela as a “war on humanity.” It has been described as the “black plague” of the 21st Century. It has been described as “9-11 occurring every day.” It has been described as the elephant in the room – no longer can it be ignored.

However you chose to describe it the fact remains that every day 6000 people die of AIDS or AIDS related diseases. However you want to classify the pandemic the fact remains that every 14 seconds another child is orphaned by AIDS. In whatever way government chooses to respond nations stand on the brink of economic and social collapse due to the ravages of the pandemic. And, the truth is that the crisis will only grow larger over the next ten to twenty years. Mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa but elsewhere as well.

The statistics are staggering when you stop to consider the ravages of this global pandemic. To date over 25 million have succumbed to this modern day plague. Another 40 million are infected. Over 14 million children have been orphaned and that number will grow by another 25 million in the next ten years. Prevalence rates in several nations exceed 30% with some nations over 40% of the adult population infected. And, as you probably know while retroviral drugs can extend and improve the quality of life there remains no cure.

That assumes the available of these drugs which in most developing countries simply is not an option.Little can be done for those who are suffering from this scourge. Once contradicted HIV becomes full blown AIDS in a matter of a few to several years. Weakened by the effects of HIV adults cannot continue to work to feed and house their families. Children leave school to tend to sick father and mothers. When parent’s dies orphans are left vulnerable and face a life of despair and hopelessness.

While the situation seems insurmountable and beyond hope, Christians are called to respond with the love of the Father. Sadly, though too few have responded. George Barna reported in the Spring of 2002 that only 2% of Evangelical would respond to this issue. This is an apparent paradox for those who are called to comfort the comfortless, give shelter to the homeless, feed the hungry and take care of the widow and orphans. (see James 1:27) There is a generation to save!

Fortunately, an awakening is taking place in the Church seemingly prompted by the fact that President Bush, in his 2003 State of the Union made this issue a matter of national concern. That evening, on January 28th, President Bush stated “ladies and gentlemen, seldom has history given us a greater opportunity to do so much for so many.” Since that time several initiatives have been launched to stimulate the Body of Christ to action.

One such an initiative is called the Hope Network. This unique network is designed to mobilize churches and pastor network to respond together for maximum impact. Based on the premise that we can do more together than we can apart; the Hope Network partners’ communities here with communities there for holistic ministry. The purpose of this partnership is community transformation on both sides.

The Hope Network is a collaborative initiative of several leading Christian organizations including World Vision, Concerts of Prayer Greater New York, and CitiReach International. The Mission America Coalition has also endorsed this new initiative for its mission of bringing the whole church together in a city around this issue. The Hope Network provides a unique opportunity for churches to partner together in a way that has not been done before. The vision of the Hope Network is “mobilizing the Church to respond to the HIV/AIDS crisis toward creating an epidemic of compassion.”

“Communities of churches have done concerts, outreaches and crusades. What we are saying to the Church is here is away way for you to partner together in holistic ministry, in a systemic process for community transformation. We believe that when a whole community comes together around this issue we will see God move in a powerful way. Not just in Africa but right here at home as well. In fact, we have already seen this begin to happen” states Brian Considine who is serving as the National Coordinator of the Hope Network.

The National Pastors Prayer Network supports the work of the Hope Network and is encouraging its pastors networks to learn more and consider getting involved. More information is available online at www.thehopenetwork.net. Network and church toolkits, including a powerful video and PowerPoint presentation, are available for network leaders to present to their networks and for pastors. When you request this kit be sure to indicate that the NPPN referred you.

The challenge before the Church is tremendous and the opportunity is great. God does promise in Isaiah 58 that when we spend ourselves on behalf of those Jesus called the “least of these” our light will rise and our prayers will be answered. That is our hope!

5.    NIGERIA: SATAN'S LADDER

>From: israel agboola <israelagboola@yahoo.com>

(Herbal/Traditional Medicine)

I see them as Satan's ladder to the Church

"Do not be yoked together with the unbelievers .. what fellowship can light have with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14-15. Over the past five years in Nigeria the most advertised and fast selling Medicine is Herbal/Traditional Medicine. Many people are out on streets looking for these people and their products. Even some gospel ministers are deeply involved in this medication for their members. These Herbal doctors claim to have solution to several diseases even so call deadly ones without any surgical operation. And since mode of presentation are almost frees, cheap or on credit sales many people are deceived into it. They make their Victims to see strange things or make them unconscious as soon as they step their shrine. The research and interviews have shown that many practices of these herbal medicine and doctors have a very close link with traditional religion and idol worship. However some of the denied any linkage with idol worship. The strongest claim of these doctors is the ability to cure where western medicine fails. They deceived people into  bondage by taking advantage of their conditions and many a time send thousands into their graves untimely.

Why People Go To Them.

Research also reveals why people go to them.

Poverty: Attack of sickness and diseases but without money to seek adequate care in the modern hospital and health centers are responsible. Free surgical operation programme of two states Governments (Oyo State and Osun State) in the last republic showed that people don't have enough to seek adequate medical care in Nigeria.

The Yorubas/African believe that all problems must come from somewhere. This often leads to curiosity to know whom their enemies are which western medicine could not answer but they believe traditional doctors can provide an answer by consulting their idols. Therefore they go to them.

The Belief that some sickness are spiritual attack and that conventional medicine cannot cure them. Therefore some seek solutions from these doctors.

Prayer Requests

Thank God for His revelation on these doctors and their products/works in Nigeria

Pray-that God will take care of the spirits behind the problem adequately as he uses His servants to expose their services.

That God should touch the Government of Nigeria to provide good and adequate medical care for the people.

Pray that Gospel ministers (Deliverance/Prayer ministers) will dedicate their lives and ministries to God, to use their opportunity to heal people who are under their attack

That God may prepare and raise churches in Nigeria to assist the sick members to seek genuine medical assistance if they cannot afford the payment on their own. (Matt. 25:33ff).

Pray for me and all members of our ministries for grace as we face the challenges in our dear country Nigeria,

God bless as we keep on supporting His Kingdom
Thanks, keep Praying, Pastor Israel Agboola

6.    CHINA: ILLEGAL PASTORS SCHOOL

>From: "Mark Simpson" <mark_simpson53@hotmail.com>

I leave Sept 17 for China, Cambodia and Singapore, gone 16 days.  The pastors school I will be teaching in is illegal in China and had to be moved two months ago. The pastors that are attending are risking a lot; I will be in trouble if the police find the school again, but they will be in more trouble.  This school will be during the dates of Sept 29-Oct 2.  One of our coworkers, involved with an unregistered orphanage in another province of China, reports that the authorities recently moved in, closed the orphanage and took all the kids away. I am taking several duffel bags of kids clothes to some orphanages in Cambodia (along with training 100 pastors in how to read, study, interpret and enjoy the Word) and am praying for favor with United Airlines so I can get it all in without paying a lot for shipping.  If I don't get that open door, the overweight luggage is pretty expensive.

Airfare/visa costs for this trip: $1,527   Already supplied: $1,300    So we are only a few hundred dollars from the goal.  (A Hispanic brother here in our area just gave $500 for airfare, and his church gave $611 for Bibles for China! Out of a church of only around 35 people). I know that prayer is where the action is. Thanks, intercessors, Mark Simpson

--->NPPNote: Mark informs me that all costs have now been covered but I wanted you to see the testimony of how God used a small in number but big in faith congregation to reach across the globe!

7.    SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: COLLABORATIVE EVANGELISM

>From: "ANS Story" <ANS_Story@sheperd.com>
>Byt: By Ramon Williams

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA  (ANS) -- Hunter Harvest03 with Greg Laurie, commenced on Thursday, September 11, with 5,700 in a packed-out Newcastle (New South Wales) Entertainment Center (which only accommodates 5,000) and an overflow meeting in the adjoining Exhibition Center. The program included The Hillsong Music Team, led by Worship Pastor, Darlene Zschech; guitarist Steve Grace; soloist and Dove Award winner, Crystal Lewis - and Mel Gibson. (Pictured: The crowd on opening night).

Prior to the official launch, 10,000 postcards had been mailed from Greg Laurie's church in California. The Chairman of Hunter Harvest, Rev. Kevin Warner, said that the postcards were sent to randomly selected addresses in the region. As a result, many came along for the opening night who had never been to a church meeting before. (Pictured: Greg Laurie speaking on the opening night).

A team of 40 High School students arrived from California a day or so ahead of the event. This was the "SWAT" Team - "Students With A Testimony". They went out into the highways and byways, inviting students and members of the community to come along. The team had paid their own expenses, such was their keenness to participate in this outreach in Newcastle.

Newcastle, is Australia's sixth largest city, with a population of 137,307. Located on the Central Coast of New South Wales, 117km (72 miles) north of Sydney, the area is recognized as an industrial region. There has been massive unemployment with industries closing down. Unemployment and stress in families is common place.

In preparation for Hunter Harvest03, 250 churches teamed up to work together, to provide personnel for counseling, ushering and outreach.

Pastor and Founder of Harvest Christian Fellowship, Riverside, CA, Greg Laurie (50) is heard on Harvest Ministry's national USA radio program, "A New Beginning" and is the featured host of a youth-oriented television program, "Day7@Harvest" showing in the USA. He has written 19 books, dealing with evangelism, discipleship and church growth.

During his opening address at Hunter Harvest03, Laurie graphically described what the Lord Jesus went through, during his crucifixion, to pay the penalty for sin.

"I had never seen a film that adequately portrayed that scene and the suffering," said Laurie, "until I attended a special screening for church leaders and representatives of Mel Gibson's forthcoming film, 'The Passion.'"

Laurie said he asked the actor if a segment of the film could be shown at Hunter Harvest in Australia. Gibson not only agreed, but recorded an introduction to the segment, greeting the Australian audience, which led into a four minutes preview depicting the crucifixion scene. The film said it all!

As the lights came up on the packed Entertainment Center and the overflow meeting, the message of the Cross had been portrayed in word and film. The appeal given by Laurie resulted in 338 inquirers streaming forward for counseling and spiritual help.

Outside the venue, workers serving on the various resource stands huddled together in prayer. Nobody inquired about church backgrounds or localities, they were joined together in outreach through Hunter Harvest03 and the Lord's servant, Greg Laurie.

As evangelist Dr Billy Graham said in Atlanta, in 1994: "The media have been writing Greg Laurie up as the man who is going to be the evangelist of the future - and he is."

This was the first night. The meetings continue until Sunday evening, when it is hoped that churches will arrange for their congregations to attend the closing rally en masse.

As people pray around the world for Greg Laurie, his team and the spiritual harvest, Hunter Harvest03 has given a city's population the opportunity to hear and see what God has done for them, as never before.

10.    PHILIPPINES: INTERNET OPENS CLOSED NATIONS

CYBERMISSIONS HELPS MISSIONARIES REACH CLOSED COUNTRIES SAFELY

By Michael Ireland, Chief Correspondent, ASSIST News Service

MANILA, THE PHILIPPINES (ANS) -- Missionaries like John Edmiston, an Australian missionary based in Manila, are using the Internet to enter closed countries that conventional missions find difficult to reach.

Edmiston has found 43 nations that are most suitable for cybermissions as a main missionary strategy because they have a sufficient number of users and are places with persecution or other restrictions on mission.

These include places like Brunei, China and India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam, Turkey, Russia, Japan, Oman, Cuba, Thailand and Bahrain, Egypt, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Saudi Arabia. China with 45.8 million Internet users (Nielsen survey) is a massive harvest field open to cybermissions.

"Apparently a country needs only to have a few thousand users for cybermissions to start making a difference," Edmiston said.

"In these cases the missionary seeks out a 'man of peace' -- someone seeking the Lord, who is connected to the Internet and who is often a leader or a person of influence.

"Once this person is contacted and becomes a Christian they can download material and spread the gospel in their land. A group of twenty or thirty good online contacts in a given people group can then form the basis for a house-church and the start of a church-planting movement. This can all be done from the relative safety of the missionaries' home base and integrated with more conventional approaches."

Edmiston has been online since 1991 with Australian BibleNet, the Prayer Page, Eternity Online Magazine, the Asian Internet Bible Institute and now Cybermissions.Org ( www.cybermissions.org ) which aims to be a web portal supporting cybermissionaries and web evangelists with articles, forums, blogs and a 12 week online training course Training In Cybermissions.

Cybermissions.Org can be found at http://www.cybermissions.org  and is a division of the Asian Internet Bible Institute ( http://www.aibi.ph/ ).  The Training In Cybermissions course can be found at: http://www.cybermissions.org/training/  and commences on October 6, 2003.

Edmiston says Cybermission "is the use of the Internet to facilitate cross-cultural evangelism, church-planting, discipleship, training and networking for missions.

"Cybermission can be sharing Christ in a chat room, designing an evangelistic web-site, running an online Bible college focused on Third World pastors, or helping missionaries strategize in an egroup."

"Some great articles on cybermissions and how you can get involved can be found online in: our articles section. ( http://www.cybermissions.org/articles/ )."

Edmiston explained that Cybermissions is the front-line use of the Internet for cross-cultural evangelism, church-planting, missions, discipleship, teaching, networking, counseling and mentoring. Cybermissions.Org is a website dedicated to building a professional community amongst those involved in cybermissions and Internet evangelism.

The website says: "We offer articles on cybermissions, a wide variety of forums, free webmail, and even the ability for cybermissionaries to have their own blogs detailing their ministry and their learnings, trials and tribulations.

"By the way Cybermissions.Org is highly interactive so you can comment on, rate and feedback on just about everything!"

"We have just added a 12 week course -- Training In Cybermissions! The course covers the nature and theology and missiology of cybermissions plus online evangelism and community-building, how to reach closed countries, web site design, networking, publicity and off-line partnership and a whole lot more!

The course starts on the first Mondays in October, January, April and July but you can enroll at any time for the next available cohort. See Training In Cybermissions Home Page (http://www.cybermissions.org/training/) for the course details."

Enrollment is a three-step (about 5 minute) enrollment process -- just read the course details, fill in the form, log into the classroom area. Click on any of the "Training In Cybermissions" links to start.

The Asian Internet Bible Institute is an interdenominational (evangelical/charismatic) ministry based in Manila, Philippines that seeks to use the Internet to edify, equip and train Asia's Great Commission Christians.

11.    NORTH KOREA: PRAYER FOCUS + CHURCH GROWTH

>From: Marc van der Woude <joel-news@xs4all.nl>

NK Missions (The World Center for North Korea Missions) is calling people
worldwide to join together in urgent prayer for North Korea. As part of NK
AWAKE, an International Prayer and Mobilization Campaign, NK Missions is
boldly calling for 10,000 prayers to be posted online for North Korea. May
these prayers stir others to pray and may they be used to open the doors of
North Korea.

LINK: http://www.nkmissions.com/prayers
---

North Koreans who have successfully fled to China paint a picture of the
terrible life in their nation: indescribable needs and persecution,
permanent surveillance and control even of thoughts. "The years of famine
have cost the lives of millions, all religious practise is strictly
forbidden - except the worship of dictator Kim Jong-il and his deceased
father Kim Il-sung," writes missions agency Open Doors. The population has
been trained to spy on each other; every person is in a political unit of
five in their workplace, and families are grouped in twenties to a 'social
peoples' unit' led by one person reporting to the State. Christians are
considered political criminals; they often disappear, executed or interned
in labour camps, where they are kept like animals inside electric fences,
making goods for export under brutal conditions.

And yet there is hope: reliable sources speak of 300,000 to 400,000
Christians living in North Korea, their number continually growing. They
meet in small groups of four or five people, hidden behind thick curtains,
with no singing, because that is far too dangerous. These house churches
organise themselves in networks which meet in remote caves.

The number of Christians among the North Korean refugees in China has grown
significantly in recent years. Some Korean house churches in China focus on
evangelising and discipling them. "I believe that once the North Korean
borders are opened, God will use North Korean Christians to spread the
Gospel in Asia," says one North Korean refugee. "Now is a time of
preparation."
