*PERU: 27,000 BAPTIZED IN ONE WEEK

>From: “Crosswalk.com” <editor@crosswalk.com>

...Twenty-seven thousand one hundred people were baptized in one week into the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Peru. The baptisms, performed throughout the country last week, accompanied the Impacto 2000 outreach program held at San Marcos Stadium in Lima by evangelist Alejandro Bullon, Adventist News Network said. The program appeared live on television, cable, and satellite broadcasts in Peru and in the Spanish-speaking areas of South and Central America.

...”This shows that no one knows what God will do,” said pastor Raul Gomez, leader of the Adventist Church in Peru. “Jesus just said go and make disciples. That’s what we as pastors and lay members are doing, through small groups studying the Bible together.”

...”This event well illustrates the amazing church growth here in Peru and throughout South America,” said Jan Paulsen, world president of the Adventist Church. “For my wife, Kari, and myself, this has been a truly astonishing experience to see the Holy Spirit working in so many ways.”

...Bullon, a native of Peru, says this is a result of the whole church working together to reach friends and neighbors. “Christ is waking us up, and the Holy Spirit is preparing His church,” he said. “This is the result of the personal enthusiasm of lay members. Even my 75-year-old mother is out looking for people to study with and to invite to the meetings. I can’t give 50,000 Bible studies, but the members can. I just preach and give the call. Together we can do great things for God.”

*SUDAN CAMPAIGN : PASTORS FAST FOR FREEDOM

>From: charisma@strang.com

Several African American pastors today began a 21-day fast to highlight the plight of thousands in Sudan facing death, disease and slavery as government forces try to impose Islamic rule on the south of the country.

The clergymen started their effort as Christians and human rights groups staged protests and awareness events across the country as part of National Sudan Day, organized by The Sudan Campaign, a coalition of religious and human rights groups.

“Our prayers are for God to loose the chains of slavery and oppression that exist in the Sudan,” said Michael Faulkner, pastor of Central Baptist Church in New York City, and a campaign board member. “We are asking God to draw the attention of the world to the cruel bondage there and prompt His people to fast and pray for their release.”

Two dozen students from Highline Elementary School in Aurora, Colo., who have raised more than $50,000 in the last three years to help buy freedom for some of those enslaved in Sudan, visited Washington, D.C., yesterday to spotlight the government’s failure to press for an end to the fighting, which has claimed around 2 million lives in the last 17 years.

*NOTTINGHAM, ENGLAND: POLICE REQUEST PRAYER; CRIME DROPS >From: Religion Today News Summary from Crosswalk.com ...Police are asking Christians to pray—and the crime rate is dropping at a housing complex in Nottingham, England. Organizers of the Prayerwatch outreach in the Arnold housing complex have reported a 10 percent drop in crime over two years, against national trends, according to Ecumenical News International. The outreach has proved so popular that a second complex is being included. “Police who aren’t even Christian are keen to pass on requests for help through prayer,” said John Robinson, a Nottingham City Council official and evangelical Christian.  ...Prayerwatch was started by police officer Alan Stuart and gained widespread support among churches. Police ask for prayers for specific incidents, but withhold the names of those involved.  Christians have prayed for incidents of theft, vandalism, and taunting of old people, said Stephen Hackney, pastor of Clifton Church Fellowship, part of the Assemblies of God.  ...Prayer requests are dealt with in the regular services and by individuals at home. Social action also plays a part, because Prayerwatch has made Christians more aware of problems in their community and “more hands-on” in solving them, Robinson said.  ...”We believe in the process and the importance of prayer,” Robinson said. “Some of those outside may have their doubts, of course, but they’re inclined to say: ‘Well it can’t do any harm.’ So everybody’s got to be a winner.”

·       MALAWI: PASTORAL UNITY GROWING

·       >From: usprayertrack@cs.com

I just want to share with you some good news about leaders in the country. From 26th to 28th April 2000, we had a conference with 75 leaders from 3 different Moslem districts. These leaders are meeting together and reaching their districts for the Lord.

At Bangula, 275 leaders from 2 districts of Malawi and some parts of Mozambique came together. May 9-13, we went to Ntchisi district, a famous district in the country for witchcraft. This meeting took place for the first time in history. One hundred ninety-seven leaders from all corners of this district including Anglican, Baptist, Presbyterians, Nazarene, etc participated. One afternoon pastors (leaders) went to the villages, offices, etc for tract distribution where over 8,000 tracts were distributed.  One lady witch doctor came to the meeting as a result of this. Every evening we were having evangelistic meetings where many people got saved, others baptized in the Holy Ghost while others were healed. These leaders have agreed to stand together and reach their district. I preached to the prisoners, and 30 prisoners gave their lives to Jesus. On Sunday we preached in different churches.

The next week the meeting for leaders took place in another Moslem area called Nkhotakota. Two hundred ten leaders came together. God gave us an incredible breakthrough. Leaders throughout the countries are seeing the importance of working together. We are reaching the whole nation as leaders are learning to come together.

Our next team was composed of pastors from all different denominations. We arrived on the same day though it was late in the night. The problem that I am facing is the lack of resources such as books and other teaching materials to share with these leaders.  Please pray for unity of pastors and please ask God to supply the necessary resources for their training.

*SRI LANKA: 220 PASTORS PREPARING FOR TROUBLE >From: “Religion Today News Summary from Crosswalk.com” <listreplies@crosswalk.com> ...Sri Lanka’s Christians are planning for persecution. Two hundred twenty pastors from the island nation’s embattled Christian community gathered in Marawila June 5-8 for a conference devoted to preparing for trouble, Compass Direct News reports. The Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka organized the “Equipped to Stand” conference, featuring Brother Andrew of Open Doors.  ...Don’t fear persecution, “but see it as God’s way of bringing the culture to us to be saved,” Brother Andrew said. He has spent much of his life smuggling Bibles into closed nations and publicizing the sufferings of persecuted Christians. Evangelicals represent only .5 percent of Sri Lanka’s 19 million people, but their churches are growing rapidly, according to Compass. More than 30 churches have been destroyed in religious violence in the last two years, it reported. Sri Lanka, off the coast of India, is predominantly Buddhist.

*PRAYER WAVE ASIA

>From: RArcher821@aol.com

Lai Keng has asked me to help pass on the information below and help

mobilize prayer!  Please pass this on to your network of family, friends and

prayer partners as well. May His Kingdom Come, Ron Archer

PrayerWave Asia    July 1 - August 19    Year 2000

John Dawson always puts things so well and with such powerful perspective.

‘Something’s happening,’ he says. And ‘it’s not like an earthquake. It’s more like being lifted by the tide, a surging tide of God’s GRACE. Across the world, the nineties is marked by the emergence of citywide prayer gatherings. . . In the last few months, I have travelled to 13 other countries that are also experiencing the same phenomena.’ WHAT IS GOD UP TO? John Dawson continues: ‘We can only wonder at His tactics, but His motives are clear enough. He loves us. He has NOT abandoned our generation.  He governs in the affairs of people and nations, and He is setting the stage for harvest. Amidst the terrifying realities and awesome potentials of the world at the beginning of the 21st century, it is no surprise that God is drawing His Church into the communion of prayer’ [HEALING AMERICA’S WOUNDS].

PrayerWave Asia is one of those sovereign moves of God’s GRACE to show us that His steadfast love for Asia never ceases. He desires to draw His Church in Asia into the communion of prayer. First launched in 1997 on July First, PrayerWave Asia seeks to unite the Church across Asia in humble, heartfelt intercession for Asia’s healing and salvation.

This year, PrayerWave Asia has a slightly different mobilization strategy.

Let me explain.

[1] Unlike previous times, PrayerWave Asia. . .  will take off from 0001 hr - 0700 hr on JULY FIRST. In large groups or small huddles, gather to worship the Lord and stand in the gap for your nation and Asia. Ask God for the GRACE to pray and the GIFT of tears.

[2] Beyond July First. . .  continue to pray on till August 19. This adds up to a total of 50 days. 50 stands for JUBILEE. God has a jubilee plan and a magnificent future for each Asian nation. Commit yourself and your group to stand in the gap for your nation’s jubilee. Also present each nation of Asia by name to the Lord daily. You are welcome to fast however the Lord leads you [see list of nations and fasting options at the end of this e-mail].

[3] Our PrayerWave Asia theme these 50 days - Needed: Nehemiahs!  Asia is facing a leadership crisis. There’s widespread [NEEDLESS] devastation and disillusionment as a result of political-economic mismanagement and blatant social injustices. During the recent International Reconciliation Consultation hosted by John Dawson in Singapore [April 2000], I was overcome by this deep stirring within me to cry out to God for Nehemiah-type servant-leadership in the Church to arise with favour across Asia. The Church is afterall God’s primary change agent on the face of the earth! I am convinced that Christ in us is indeed the HOPE of the nations! Therefore, for 50 days beginning July First, would you join unite with the Asian Church in priestly mediation on behalf of a very traumatised Asia? Be an active voice [Isaiah 62:6-7] appealing for her healing. One day, it will be said among the nations: God’s people - among us - stooped down to make us great - restoring our dignity, repairing our communities, rebuilding our fortunes, renewing our hopes, reviving our spirits, redeeming our lives . . . in the power of Christ’s love!!!

[4] Kindly inform, inspire and involve prayer groups or prayer networks in your sphere of influence in this 50-Day PrayerWave initiative. Do reply now if you yourself are participating and/or informing other groups to participate.

*PRAYER FOR INDONESIA

>From: “Thomas F. Fischer” <tfischer@journey.com>

Only on rare occasions do I re-direct the normal focus of Ministry Health to seek your prayers. The following prayer request is sent anonymously on behalf of the persecuted Christians of Indonesia.

Evidence of this growing wave of Indonesian persecution is described in the following item from the email newsletter “Religious News Summary” of June 20, 2000 [News from ReligionToday is Copyrighted by Crosswalk.com (http://religiontoday.crosswalk.com)]

“Several Christian villages in Indonesia were destroyed and their

inhabitants slaughtered by Muslim militia June 19, Christians in the country

said. Villages around Galela and the interior of Tobelo on Halmahera Island

were attacked by as many as 3,000 jihad soldiers and their inhabitants

either died or fled to the jungle, inhabitants reported, according to John

Barr of the Uniting Church in Australia National Assembly. The Indonesian

army ‘offered no protection,’ Barr said. ...In Duma village, ‘a fine old

church, recently renovated, has been burnt down. It is not known how many

people have died. Thousands have fled,’ he said.” *

The following prayer is sought by an anonymous individual. Though I know the identify of the individual, if the individual were publicly identified the individual requesting your prayers would be subject to persecution also. In one personal email to me the individual indicated that “radical Jihad forces are bent not only to wipe Christians from Ambon, but also to spread the Christian persecution to other Indonesian provinces, including Java- the most populated island in Indonesia (80% of 200 millions people live in Java).” The anonymous request follows:

“Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We, the Indonesian Christians, would like you to know that we are living dangerously these days. Particularly, our brothers and sisters who live in the Maluccu islands.

As you know there has been religious conflict, Moslems versus Christians, for the last 2 years. The situation is worsening since the arrival of the Moslems Jihad force from Java, who have vowed to defend their religion with their life.

The capital city of Ambon, which was predominantly Christian, has been surrounded by the Moslem force. A few church building that is not destroyed, can not be used for services, due to the tension. It is a matter of time, before destruction to these buildings comes. Thousands from both sides have fled to the neighbouring islands or provinces. The whole city is like a killing field. Doing daily chores may get them killed by snipers.

Our Christian brothers and sisters there need help very urgently. The purpose of these radical Jihad force is to wipe out Christians from Ambon, which is predominantly Christian. The churches have been uprooted because villages are destroyed. Monday, during the last fighting, or more accurately, attack on Christians, in Duma town, there were 170 people killed and thousands fled to neighboring islands. The fighting has spread to literally the whole province of Maluccus.

Please, pray for us, Christians in Indonesia. Thank you.

[Name withheld for security reasons]”

Perhaps accounts like this help put ministerial health issues into a healthier perspective for those not experiencing persecution. The calling to proclaim the Kingdom of God is much more than just dealing with inconvenience, temporal pain, rejection, frustration and contrarians within our churches. Indeed, it entails sacrifice...sometimes great sacrifice such as the Christians in Indonesia and other areas of the world are experiencing.

I would like to invite you and your congregation to join Ministry Health in “Six Weeks Of Prayer” for Indonesia. Your commitment to pray for them personally and in every worship service through July will greatly encourage these persecuted Christians. If the thousands of subscribers of Ministry Health could do that for 6 weeks on behalf of Indonesia and Christians throughout the world, I believe it would be a very, very powerful thing.  “Prayer,” as Jesus said, “can move mountains.”

In appealing for prayers on behalf of Indonesian Christians Ministry Health

does not intend, in any way, to overlook other areas of the world also

experiencing persecution. Indeed, it is hope that drawing attention to the

critical situation in Indonesia will bring greater awareness of the needs of

our prayers for the people of God throughout the world. Those with further

insights on Indonesian persecution or other persecution are invited to share

their account with Ministry Health at tfischer@journey.com

If you would like to join in this “Six Weeks Of Prayer” for Indonesia, please send a message to tfischer@journey.com with the “S.W.O.P” in the subject heading. Your support and participation in the “SWOP Team” is appreciated.

You’re in our prayers, Indonesia. May God do a great work through our urgent petitions to Him!

*INDIA: ENCOURAGING REPORT FROM ‘EVERY HOME FOR CHRIST’ >From: “Religion Today News Summary from Crosswalk.com” <listreplies@crosswalk.com> ...”God is answering prayers in India,” a ministry to the country says. People suffering from spiritual and physical afflictions are healed when Christians pray for them, according to Colorado Springs-based Every Home for Christ. The ministry has worked in the country since 1964.

... Workers with Every Home for Christ have visited millions of homes in India, distributing literature and ministering to residents, it said. More than 21,000 home fellowships, called Christ Groups, have been formed by the ministry and about 7 million people responded positively to the gospel message, meaning they either professed faith in Christ or said they wanted to learn more about Him, the ministry said.

*SUVA, FIJI: PASTORS DEFEND COUP VICTIMS

>From: “Religion Today News Summary from Crosswalk.com” <listreplies@crosswalk.com> ...Pastors stopped looters in Fiji. They acted bravely when mobs in Suva attacked more than 160 stores in rioting May 19, the day coup leader George Speight stormed the Parliament building and took 31 people hostage, Nazarene Communication Network News reported. The mobs demolished stores owned by Fijians of Indian descent, a minority group that controls most business and industry, according to news reports.

...Four ethnic Fijian pastors defended Indian storeowners, in some cases throwing the looters out of their stores, NCN News reported. The pastors arrived when a storeowner called them for help. With the town in chaos, they went from shop to shop, helping close stores and shuttering windows and doors. Looters cursed and threatened them, but the pastors continued undaunted, NCN News reported.

...Looters began stacking stolen goods onto a truck owned by the Nazarene district superintendent, who ordered the mob to remove the plunder and refused when they offered him a share of the loot, according to NCN News.  “This is a significant moment in the development of our church, to see holiness in action in these new Nazarenes,” missionary James Johnson said.

*AUSTRALIA: SYATPole HAS UNEXPECTED TURN OUT >From: “Religion Today News Summary from Crosswalk.com” <listreplies@crosswalk.com> ...Australian students prayed through megaphones when unexpectedly large groups of their classmates turned out for See You at the Pole. Students around the country prayed at their school flagpoles May 11 (http://www.syatp.youthalivevictoria.com.au/); similar events in the United States and Canada are held Sept. 20, reflecting the opposite seasons in opposite hemispheres, according to the ministry.  ...”Many people were just overcome by emotion when we prayed for our friends to be saved,” a New South Wales student said. The public prayer was “the best thing I have ever been involved in and seen happen.” ...Teachers said they were astonished that students actually would gather and pray in front of classmates and teachers. “One student remarked that we were brave,” a student in Victoria said.

“The only reason I’m here is because of God, and that I want to see a difference in this school,” the student said. A student in Western Australia said, “Today is a turning point in our school’s history.”

*HOUSE OF PRAYER - RUSSIA

>From: “Impact Prayer Ministries” <impactprayermin1@hotmail.com>

>From: “Intercessors Network” <lw.pray@swipnet.se>

Thank you for your prayers and concern for Russia. We appreciate your involvement in supporting the Body of Christ in this great land. As summer progresses, we continue to focus our prayers on Chechnya, and on other issues that affect the daily lives of the average Russian, and in particular those matters that affect Protestant, evangelical, charismatic/Pentecostal, and other Christian believers.  The Lord is adding people to the churches, in spite of all opposition.

Summer is the time when many churches have special evangelistic events.  It is a busy season, however, because of the need of most people to spend a good deal of time growing food on their small plots of land (dachas). Some pastors look at the low attendance of church services in the summer and say, “Dacha season.” Others adjust their schedules so that the church meets at some other time than the weekend. Without food from the dachas, some families would not make it through the winter.  The war in Chechnya drags on. The summer is a difficult time to fight in the mountains because of the leafy trees that provide cover. Although some areas seem to be secure, there are still surprise attacks on Russian forces. Please pray for a just and peaceful solution to this conflict, for the Chechen people to be able to return to their lands and homes, and for there to be a political administration that is capable of ruling this area.

The new Russian government under President Vladimir Putin certainly faces some overwhelming obstacles. Organized crime controls most business enterprises, many professionals (such as doctors or teachers) have abandoned their professions due to low pay, and an increasing number of young people are addicted to drugs. The needs here are desperate, and prayer coupled with action is needed in every area of life.

Please continue to pray for God’s mercy upon Russia, for the Lord to touch the hearts of the leaders of government and business, and for widespread preaching of the Gospel. The people need the hope that only Jesus can give.

Thank you for praying, Aimee Hennen, Lena Volkova

House of Prayer - Russia

P.S. We want to thank you for your prayers for Larissa Kozhevnikova, wife of the worship leader Alexei Kozhevnikov of Togliatti Christian Center. She committed her life to the Lord at a conference in Togliatti in the month of June. We are thanking God for this answer to 7 years of prayer! Thank you for doing your part. Let us rejoice that all members of this family are serving the Lord together now. “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
