2. REPORT FROM BURMA, TIBET, NEPAL, INDIA

>From: Jacob John <jacskj@yahoo.com>

Greetings in the ever living name of Jesus!  I had the WONDERFUL privilege of bringing the Gospel to more than 150,000 people in the past one month and I am sure that the Gospel came to these people for the first time. Many remote regions heard the first missionary foot-steps.

I witnessed some of the poorest of poor people I had ever seen. 20 days I spent among the most primitive of lands. It seemed I was living a world centuries back, places that have never seen even a wheel.

20 people groups, 134 distinct language groups heard the Gospel. As I went and probed deep in the jungles of Burma, the mountains of Nepal and Tibet, I saw a variety of people groups, some of whom, I am sure the world has not heard about.

I also visited the Kumbh Mela at Allahabad, India, the largest gathering on earth, where an estimated 40 million have taken a dip on the banks of the river Ganges and tomorrow, another 40 million are taking a bath on a single day at the same place! They believe that the sins of 100,000 years of the lives, which includes their thousands of their past lives (hindus believe in re-incarnation) will be washed away if they took a dip in the Ganges river, a river which they believe flows from the head of one of their 33 million god and goddesses.

I was there during this event for three days, and did what I could do to open the blindness the devil has given them. In a small way, along with a team of 40 of our missionaries, we could distribute 200,000 pieces of tracts and witnessed personally to 22 people. And the immediate harvest, 2 precious souls of two hindu godmen whom I met on a train. I enclose their picture. These two godmen after hearing the Gospel saved me from the crowd of sword-wielding sadhus who ran after me when they saw me distributing tracts.

We are gong again on the 15th of February, hoping that we will have around 2 million tracts and Gospel packets. The Kumbh closes on Feb 22. Please pray that finances will be raised for the purchase of these tracts from Bible Society. We are also printing some 100,000 tracts with whatever resources we have. Pray that we will have the finances to get these tracts in 7 languages.

A few Interesting notes from my diary:

Burma: Deep in the jungles of Northern Burma, there is a region called Som. In just 100 square kilometer area, there are 62 villages and each village has it’s own distinct language. Majority of the people from villages have not spoken to people from the neighborhood villages for decades because of the language barrier. Fights between villages are common. It was a great challenge to bring the Gospel to these villages and a great challenge lies ahead in translating Bible portions in these languages. There is a common language though but is understood by only 5% of the population of each village. Village populations vary from 700-1200 people.

Toilets are made at the edge of a cliff. A wooden plank having a hole, hangs out on the cliff. It was a amazing experience, sitting there out in the open. The plank would creek dangerously.

In one people group, the dead are put on the terrace of houses for the vultures and birds to devour. The bodies stinked so much but it does not bother the locals. After the body is eaten or decomposed, the skull is then hung on the door to ward off evil spirits.  Foreigners are not allowed to many places inside Burma. There is also heavy restrictions on Indian side of the border with permits required from the army to enter North-east India. I managed to sneak in with help of some locals.

China-Tibet border: In many mountain villages, I saw hundred per cent illiteracy. A barter system exists through which trade is carried on with adjoining villages. Fire is made through an interesting traditional way through the use of wood powder and stones. There are no medical facilities. Infant mortality rate is very high. More than one hundred children died in just two months in a village having 1800 people. Each family has 8-13 children. 8 was the minimum number of children I saw in a family. There is no educational facility. Children are initiated into agriculture as early as 10.  One whole village of 2000 people were massacred by the Chinese army two years back. I visited this deserted village.

INDIA: A group of thousands of naked sadhus, high on addiction were the first to take the dip in the Ganges on the auspicious occasion to wash off their sins. Some of the stunts they did was to pull a jeep with their genitals. Last Kumbh hundreds of sadhus were killed when they attacked the robed sadhus over the right to take the first dip. Hundreds of Americans, Mexicans, Europeans throng around these sadhus to know about the path to Moksha (Salvation). These sadhus generally are high on narcotics all the time.

3. KENYA: 500 SUPPORT NATIONAL PRAYER INITIATIVE

>From: John_Robb@wvi.org

 Dear Friends,

May we ask you to join our team of 11 prayer leaders from six countries in prayer as we head for Kenya at the end of this week to help facilitate a national prayer initiative? Up to 500 Christian leaders from all the nation’s denominations plus some political officials are expected to take part in a five day effort to be held in Nairobi, the nation’s capital. The climax will be  an open air service in the public square for all who want to come on Saturday the 24th.

Kenya is in crisis on a number of fronts. This once prosperous African nation is increasingly divided along ethnic lines and suffering an economic meltdown. Over 4 million Kenyans have been threatened with starvation due to the absence of seasonal rains and the prolonged drought.  Humanitarian crisis, political uncertainty, economic stagnation, ethnic division and the HIV/AIDS pandemic all call for God’s healing and transformation. For this reason World Vision is bringing together  church and prayer leaders from throughout the nation for healing and reconciliation of relationships between denominations and ethnic groups and to pray together for social, political and economic transformation. All the great modern socio-political transformations in this century had prayer movements behind them and we believe the resolution of Kenya’s serious problems lies in the same direction.

Please pray with us for:

1. Clear guidance and anointing of the Holy Spirit upon our team, the organizers and the participants. We need to know clearly how we should minister in each situation.

2. His protection over all who participate and that all the leaders  who should come will be able to do so, traveling safely from their home cities.  3. Humility, brokenness and real reconciliation between denominations and ethnic groups represented.

4. Confession and repentance for national and church sins, some of which the organizers have listed below.

5. Identification, binding and expulsion of spiritual forces involved with ethnic hatred, division, violence, occultism and corruption of the society.  6. Development of a strong, united prayer movement encompassing the whole church in the nation.

Here are some of the national sins and other key issues for prayer the

organizers have sent to us to share with you

1.Tribalism and Nepotism

2. Corruption

3. Witchcraft and Occult

4. Idolatry, Apostasy, Cults and reemergence of African traditional religions.

5. Polygamy

6. Violence and Murder

7. Rebellion against Authority

8. Repentance for Devil Worshiping

9.  Healing the disunity in the Church of Jesus Christ.

10. Upcoming Elections for new political leadership

11. Need for regular rains and effective relief for over 4 million needing

food aid during the serious drought conditions

Thanks so much again for standing with us in this way. I will do my best to update you as the initiative progresses to let you know how the Lord is answering your prayers.

Warmly in Christ, John Robb

It is hard to believe that its been almost a year since the last Women’s Summit and two years since the last Praying with Power conference.  It seems that time really does fly!  Our prayer is that these conferences impacted the attendees in such a way that they have been compelled to make a difference in the 10/40 Window nations.

We have begun the historical step of taking our training conferences into the 10/40 Window nations.  We are gearing up for the training that’s needed for Praying Through the Window V, which will focus prayer and outreach to children, teens and young adults in the 10/40 Window.  I hope you’ll join us in what promises to be anointed and cutting edge training that will penetrate the Window with the knowledge of Gods love.

We are excited about the lineup of topics and international speakers who are the modern day heroes of the faith.  These speakers are practitioners who are working in the field and are experiencing first hand the transforming power of God.  These anointed men and women of God will open the eyes of our understanding with informative, challenging and interactive sessions.

Were praying that you will be part of these historical conferences as we

9. CANADA: POWER TO CHANGE MEDIA-BLITZ

>From: “Crosswalk.com” <newsletters@crosswalk.com>

Campus Crusade’s “Power to Change” media-blitz has swept Canada during the last two years and has affected thousands of lives.

Within a few months, the campaign took root in the Maritimes, Saskatchewan, Northern Alberta and now Manitoba and southwestern Ontario. Supporters “feel it is of the Lord that we take this campaign into Canada, that we keep sharing the gospel and raising the level of debate about spiritual issues in our country,” says Barry Bowater, national director.

Regional campaigns saturate communities with the Christian message, to allow people everywhere to hear about the  gospel of Jesus Christ, according to Ted Yuke, pastor of Rock Church, Nova Scotia. A toll-free phone number and web site offer links to trained volunteers who supply “Power to Change” booklets and CDs.

The faith stories by well-known sports and other personalities touch people at a personal level, says Leonard Buhler, provincial chairman for the Manitoba campaign, which starts March 16. “God is working here ...  Every day we challenge people to get involved.  I just can’t believe the number of people waiting to step on board who say this is what they have been waiting for,” he said. “There’s a season of harvest coming.”

10. BULGARIA: A BAPTIST PRAYER JOURNEY

>From: Alice Davis <alidavis@mah-online.com>

We began our day with prayer walking. We broke up into teams of two and mapped out a course. Then, after breakfast and a team devotional we proceeded on our journey. As I walked there were many thoughts that ran through my mind. Such as, the fact that there is a great deal of oppression from the Orthodox churches. But also, that the people as a whole are strongly opposed to the witness of Baptists.  We prayed for God’s Holy Spirit to guide us and empower the believer’s in Plovdiv.

Afterwards we gathered to share of our experiences in prayer. It was very apparent that there was much greater freedom to pray for God to work in some places than in others. We prayed for buildings that would be dedicated to the ministry of the Word of the Lord in various ways.

Later that day Pastor Nikov led us to the Ancient city of Plovdiv.  >From an old fortress we viewed apartment buildings, businesses, and factories as far as the eye could see in all directions. Here we gathered to pray for an extended period of time for the Holy Spirit to hover over the city convicting people of their need for Christ. This truly was a labor of love as we sought to bless the pastor, church, and the nation with our prayers.

The people have been most hospitable. They are extremely kind and gracious. Out of their poverty they have shared their meals with us. And the food is very delicious. For Illinois Baptists to be in Bulgaria is to penetrate the darkness with the good news of Christ Jesus. I believe that the work here will be very productive. The believers will be encouraged.  Churches will be established. Pastors will be called out to serve. And God will empower the believers through answered prayer. I am thankful that i get to be a part of something so special.

Robert Carruthes and team

Monday in Plovliv

We spent the morning in the Center town Plaza where everyone goes to see and be seen. Thousands of people flooded the walkway and markets. The Plovdiv pastor joined us for the afternoon and took us to the “Old City.” Here we climbed one of the 7 stone hills, a place where we could see a panorama of the city, and there we prayed for the city as a whole. This was the first time the pastor had an opportunity to witness our prayer walking. He did not voice an audible prayer but I could see his face and he was agreeing with us in prayer.

What moved me the most today was encountering a Mormon missionary team from America; they were about ten strong. The evil one is bringing reinforcements. If the ancient darkness does not continue to succeed in holding this city in bondage it appears he is working to see that his new darkness does. Oh, how I pray for God’s people to respond and for the Holy Spirit to empower the believers who are here to boldly proclaim the Good News despite the consequences. I know I cannot pray this for them without praying it also for myself so that has become my prayer as well. Oh, how I hate to leave the believers who have been our brothers and sisters but now have become friends as well.

To God be the Glory, Duane and team

I wish you could see and experience what I am seeing and experiencing. We are leaving Plovdiv as I write (it is not easy to type on this folding keyboard as we  travel these roads).

I am saddened as we leave this city. I have been in constant prayer for it since we arrived. It would be so nice to watch as God answers prayer.  However, we have already been able to see the answered prays.  Bulgaria has been so very dry that one of the previous team’s ongoing prayer was for rain. It rained from the time they left until we arrived and it is raining again today. Another prayer I saw answered was my prayer that we would have an opportunity to share Christ with one of the hotel employees. We cannot initiate a Gospel conversation because of the persecution of the church but when they ask we can share. This morning as we were checking out the clerk asked why we were in Plovdid and we were able to plant the seed of the Gospel. He claims to be an atheists and I am praying that during the course of the partnership we will see that seed sprout and take root. The believers in Plovdiv have been a tremendous blessing to me. They have encouraged me so much more than I could have possibly blessed them. One of the teenagers in the church leads her youth group. They enjoy Christian music and she translates a lot of the songs and choruses into Bulgarian.  Her name is Anna. She is the pastor’s niece.

To God be the Glory, Duane and Team.

11. URBANA US & URBANA EUROPE + AFRICA IN JERUSALEM

>From: “Cliff Newham” <cliff@l.ict.om.org>

>From Network Chairman, George Verwer

Dear Mission Mobilisers around the globe,

It’s hard to find words to share what the Holy Spirit did at the great

Urbana Students Missions Conference that was attended by about 20,000

students, staff, missionaries and other leaders in God’s great harvest

force. God’s hand was mightily upon Barney Ford who coordinated the event

and I felt there was real teamwork among all who took part. When Paul

Borthwick gave an invitation to get involved, a high percentage of the

audience stood up. Pray for the difficult and vast task of follow-up. 50%

of people attending were of different ethnic groups and the speakers as

well represented the global culture that most of us now live in. For more

information, be sure to check the Urbana website www.urbana.org

Please start mobilising more prayer and people for the “Urbana of Europe”, the great pan- European missions conference sponsored by TEMA which will take place after Christmas this year. We had an important UK leaders’ luncheon at Forest Hill, London when Trevor Gregory, the Director of TEMA, shared the vision. I also shared about the importance of the conference and we would be happy to send you the tape of our meeting. Also check out the TEMA website: http://www.mission.org or write to Trevor for more information: TEMA, Eendrachstraat 29a, NL3784 -KA Terschuur, Netherlands.

At Urbana we launched a new mobilisation tool called “God’s Great Ambition”, a small billboard type book of powerful mission quotes. We had these printed, so we can supply them at a very low price. Though the retail value is $5, we can supply them at two for US$1. We would be happy to send you a sample. Many of my quotes that are in this little book are also on my website. You may want to check into www.georgeverwer.com.

We rejoice that about 500 missions delegates from all over Africa will be meeting in Jerusalem from May 6th to 10th. Chacko Thomas will be there and will give one of the talks, on “the vision, goals and purpose of the Missions Mobilization Network”. He is looking forward to meeting those of you who will be there. We pray that this African Millennial Consultation will really give greater momentum to African churches to send more workers to unreached peoples, especially in the 10/40 window.

Our representative for the Spanish speaking world, Fernando García Cruz, left London and returned to Mexico late last year, to continue the work from there. You can contact him by email at: ferkronos@mexis.com or by post at:

Av. Juarez-Pelaxtitla No.10 Col. Asuncion-Xochimilco, 16040 Mexico, D.F.  MEXICO. Let him know how we can help you mobilise more Latin Americans to the rest of the world for Christ!

In one sense, our goal is to mobilise people from everywhere to anywhere that the Holy Spirit directs. It surely is a mystery how it all work s out, especially since we so easily get things wrong and make so many mistakes. It’s good that our God can work in the midst of a mess.

Yours for MORE MOBILISATION, George Verwer and Chacko Thomas

13. NEPAL: “THE POTENTIAL IS GREAT”

>From: isu [mailto:isu@enet.com.np]

Dear Praying brothers and sisters  in Christ, Greetings from Nepal. Here is file for prayer request....

Publication and Communication:-

The number of Christian is grownup 10th times more during the past ten years. There are so many churches has been established and some of the churches are strong and still there are so many churches is struggling in their needs. Many of the churches are in villages and remote areas and even in the town churches facing so many difficulties. They have not their own church land and building for the worship and many churches are at the rented places.

In the other hand there is big portion of the total population of this country Nepal still not been evangelized yat . we have seen individual evangelism is more effective to grow the number of believers but they needed theological education to grow in the spirit. All can not go to bible college or for the training’s, they can learn in their practical life, in  their church and in the house, but they needs study materials.  so the publication and communication ministry is very much effective. This ministry includes publication of Christian books needed for our pastors and theological students and  for our Christians, Hymn books, News paper, and so on. Also, we aim to use media’s such as Radio Television, etc to spread the Gospel.  This is one of the effective ministries that we are involved with. We would be grateful if we can use parts of the funds to promote this ministry.

Publication of Hymn books:

As the number of believers and the churches is growing there is big needs of the hymn books too. This time we want to publish at least 5000 copies of the hymn books with including more new songs and with standard printings. the song book is in my computer with 507 songs and 99 Koras which is latest one . But this time we are including some of the very famous songs used in the churches. There is big demand of the song books but we can not product at a time to fulfill ... The cost of the production is about Rs.300,000.00 which is US$4000.00 so more than the fifty percent of the cost can be covered by its sale.

The Media:

·        The media is one of the most effective means of evangelism.

·        It is also one of the most effective ways of strengthening believers.

·        It gives information from the Christian perspective.

·        It builds relationships among believers.

Christian access to the media in Nepal:

Since the reestablishment of democracy in Nepal in 1990 and the creation of a new constitution, many previously sensitive areas have opened up, including human rights, trade unions, privatization, and religious freedom. The results can be seen in society and people have begun to freely exercise these rights.  Theoretically there is also freedom of the press. It is enshrined in the new constitution.  The media does now play a vital role in society but despite the proliferation of newspapers, magazines and electronic media sources (television, radio, the internet), these do not support Christianity or report Christian events in Nepal. Christian projects meet with rejection and antagonism.  The Churches are forbidden from broadcasting on the Government-run television and radio (except for on special occasions) and Christian activities and news are ignored or dismissed in the Secular press.

However, the potential for evangelism offered by the media is great.  It is for this reason that we feel the need for our own private Christian media; many are praying that we may have the means of expressing Christian news with a Christian voice, reaching out both to the Churches and into the community.   We have tried to tap into this potential through radio and television broadcasts but as yet we have not received permission to broadcast Christian programs.  Likewise we do not have our own regular and reliable newspaper. Some Christians started a newspaper but it is not published regularly. The mediator is been publishing regularly, please do remember for its institutional developments. I hope your kind and cooperation will be appreciable for this publication and communication ministry, please do remember in your prayer, and give the partnership hands.

15. PRAYING HYDE

>From: Francois Carr <mwtedeum@mweb.co.za>

Prayer is the first thing, the second thing, the third thing necessary to

a minister. Pray, then my dear brother; pray, pray, pray. Edward Payson

John Hyde was made a great blessing to me. I had read that precious book of Andrew Murray—With Christ in the School of Prayer, and in Mr. Hyde I saw a living example of one who actually lived with Christ in the School of Prayer. His example gave me a deep longing and even an inspiration to be a pupil in this school also.... Jesus, our Great High Priest wants “companions,” “fellows,” “partakers” to enter with Him into the sanctuary as intercessors. The High Priest of old had to enter into the Holy of Holies alone, but our High Priest begs for partners to be with Him. This is what Hyde really was, and it is strange that we should be so reluctant to take up this great privilege of being fellow intercessors with Him....  The first time I met John Hyde was at Ludhiana in the Punjab (India) where he lived at the time. I had been invited to speak a few words on the revival in the Khassia Hills (India) to the Conference of the United States Presbyterian Mission, which had their annual session at the time there. I had traveled by night from Allahabad to Ludhiana and reached there early in the morning. I was taken to have a cup of tea with the delegates and others. I was introduced across the table to Mr. Hyde. All that he said to me was, “I want to see you. I shall wait for you at the door.” There he was waiting, and his first word was, “Come with me to the prayer room. We want you there I do not know whether it was a command or request. I felt I had to go. I told him that I had traveled all night and that I was tired and had to speak at 4 o*clock in the afternoon, but I went with him.

We found half a dozen persons there and Hyde went down on his face before the Lord. I knelt down and a strange feeling crept over me. Several prayed, and then Hyde began, and I remember very little more. I knew that I was in the presence of God Himself and had no desire to leave the place.  In fact, I do not think that I thought of myself or of my surroundings, for I had entered a new world and I wanted to remain there. We had entered the room about 8 o*clock in the morning. Several had gone out and others had come in, but Hyde was on his face on the floor and had led us in prayer several times. Meals had been forgotten, and my tired feeling had gone. The revival account and the message that I was to deliver and concerning which I had been very anxious, had gone out of my mind until about 3:30 when Hyde got up. I found we were the only two present.

He said to me, “You are to speak at 4 o’clock. I shall take you to have a cup of tea.” I replied that he must need a little refreshment too, but he said, “No, I do not want any but you must have some.” We called in my room and washed hurriedly and then we had a cup of tea, each of us. Then it was full time for the service. He took me right to the door, then took my hand and said, “Go in and speak. That is your work. I shall go back to the prayer room to pray for you. That is my work. When the service is over, come into the prayer room again and we shall praise God together.”   What a thrill, like an electric shock, passed through me as we parted. It was easy to speak, though I was speaking through an interpreter. What I said, I do not know. Before the meeting was through, the Indian translator, overcome by his feelings and overpowered by the Spirit of God, failed to go on and another had to take his place. I know the Lord spoke that night.  He spoke to me and spoke to many.

I Realized the Power of Prayer

I realized then the power of prayer. How often I had read of blessing in answer to prayer, but it was brought home to me that evening with  such force that ever since, I try to enlist prayer warriors to pray for me whenever I stand up to deliver His messages. It was one of the most wonderful services I ever attended, and I know that it was the praying saint behind the scenes that brought the blessing down on me. I went back after the service to Hyde, to praise the Lord. There was no question asked by him, whether it was a good service or not, whether men had received a blessing or not, nor did I think of telling him what blessing I had personally received and how his prayers had been answered. He seemed to know it all, and how he praised the Lord. How easy it was for me to praise the Lord and speak to Him of the blessing He had given.

I had very little talk with him at that conference. I knew very little about him and somehow I had no desire to ask him any questions. But a new power had come into my life which humbled me and gave me a new idea altogether of a missionary*s life and even a Christian life. The ideal revealed to me then has never been lost, but, with the years as they pass, there is a deeper longing to live up to the ideal. I had a talk with several of the missionaries about him, and I found that he had been misunderstood by them, but their eyes were being opened to the fact that he was not an ordinary worker, but especially endowed with the spirit of prayer and given to India to teach men how to pray.

Years afterwards I asked him whether he had realized in his early years that the missionaries were not in favour of the way he spent so much of his time in prayer. He smiled that sweet smile which one can never forget, and said, “Oh, yes, I knew it, but they did not understand me, that was all. They never intended to be unkind.” There was not one atom of bitterness as far as I could see. At the time I came into contact with him, they spoke approvingly of his long vigils. The probability is that he was not in bed one night during that conference, and the Lord honoured him. He was out of sight, but in answer to his his prayers, many were blessed. I believe a new era in the history of the Mission and in the history of the Punjab was commenced at that time. Taken from Praying Hyde, edited by Captain E. G.  Carré. (Account by J. Pengwern John)

17. SOULS SAVED WHILE 60 MILLION DIP IN GANGES

>From: Missions Insider <insider@christianaid.org>

The recently-concluded Maha Kumbh Mela, held in Allahabad, India, every 12 years, attracts millions of Hindus from all castes and sects who hope to literally wash their sins away by bathing in the river waters.

“An estimated 60 million people took a dip at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna Rivers, hoping to attain moksha, the illusive forgiveness of sins,” reports an indigenous evangelical missionary who ministered to the crowds during the event. “It was exciting: the roar of the throngs’ footsteps, the air reverberating with chants from the temples along the bank, the smoke from the yagnas—the ‘holy’ altar fire—and finally the moment when the millions hoping for salvation went under the waters of the river. But, as in ages past, each resurfaced only to realize that their hopes had been dashed.”

Yet through the grace of God, there were some who did find true forgiveness of sin, thanks to the work of the native believers who spent days preaching the gospel to these lost people.

“One man, addicted to drugs, liquor, and smoking, came to cause trouble for us but when he heard the gospel, he knelt down on the side of the road and accepted the Lord,” the missionary says. “Another man, a high caste Hindu, accepted Christ after he found his hopes to achieve peace through Kumbh Mela crushed.” Success stories like this were common all throughout the event.

But the success was met with stiff opposition. Among the crowds were those who did their best to stem the evangelistic effort. “A few activists came while we were distributing literature,” the brother says. “They snatched it and burned it.” Other incidents included threats and beatings.  Nonetheless, a total of about 20 million pieces of gospel literature were distributed.

“Our evangelistic campaign went unnoticed for the first three weeks,” he says. “Then news of our work began to reach the devout Hindu groups.” Christian workers credit their prayer support—some half a million people strong—for protecting them from serious harm.

And they ask for prayer for the millions of Indians who took the tracts and other literature home. “Thousands showed a strong desire to know more about Jesus,” one of the workers says. “All this was possible because of the prayers and support of Christians from around the world.”
