It will come as no surprise that Luis was upbeat about the results of the past decade of mobilization . . . and probably for good reason. He remains convinced that "a church for every people, the gospel for every people" was the right goal. "Yes, if we were going to err on the vision ethos prevalent at the time, we chose to believe that God would do great things if we were faithful & diligent to the call," he wrote. According to Dan Scribner's latest assessment, 78% of the Joshua Project 2000 peoples (1239) have reported evangelistic / church planting activity onsite. In addition, up until about 18 months ago, only 4% of the JP2000 people reported a church fellowship of 100 or more. Now that number stands at 1/3 of our churches. About 4 out of 10 unreached peoples had a church planting team in their midst 18 mos. ago -- and now the figure is more like 65%. Some 77% were targeted for church planting back then... and today, only about 12% remain to be targeted! _________________________________________>>> *AFRICA: PRAYER IS THE STRATEGY >From: "John & Kay Quintero" We thank you so much for all your prayers for the Jula consultation which met February 13-17. God worked in a mighty way during that time together. First of all, the whole group decided that the major strategy for the coming year is prayer. We are thrilled because prayer is considered the main strategy for our Jula team. I will be working with an African missionary to encourage all those working with the Jula to engage prayer warriors and set up prayer teams. We will work together with prayer requests. We will also work to build up the number of French speaking prayer partners. Pray that each group will see the importance of prayer as the foundation of all that is done to reach the Jula. The second strategy the group decided on is mobilizing African Christians. This is also an important area and one for which you have already been praying. A committee has been formed that will go into evangelical churches, encouraging them to pray for the Jula and teaching them how to witness effectively to Muslims. Pray that those who will be involved in this will be received well in the churches and that many African Christians will become burdened for reaching their Jula friends and neighbors. Your prayers ARE making a difference. Never underestimate the importance of the time you spend in intercession for the Jula. God IS working in their midst and we appreciate the part that each one of you is playing in this ministry. We have a strong sense of the brooding, powerful presence of the Spirit of God here in Bujumbura. People here are desperate to find a solution to the conflict which has torn this nation apart for years. 150 pastors and other Christian leaders from virtually all denominations have gathered to seek the Lord with the theme of 2 Chronicles 7:14, "If people who are called by my name will humble themselves, pray, seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear their prayer, forgive their sin and heal their land." The last two days have been filled with deep repentance and self-humbling. We have heard moving confessions by Hutus, Tutsis and Twa standing as representatives on behalf of their peoples to confess openly their crimes and sins and to extend forgiveness to one another. It was as if the Lord Himself were in the room weeping with us. What an extraordinary time! This morning during the prayer breakfast, about 50 of the top political leaders and civil servants of the nation gathered to be challenged with the need to find reconciliation through the cross of Christ. One of our Rwandan team members sternly warned them not to go down the same road as his nation. Another team member gave a prophetic word filled with the hope of restoration and based on Isaiah 61. I was then asked to lead them all in prayer as we held hands in unity, with all our hearts asking the Lord to save and heal Burundi. The Lord was there and touched them. They said they had never heard such a message. Our team of 11 from six nations is operating in beautiful unity, sensitivity and with the discernment and power of God. We feel your prayers so strongly! Please continue to pray for our final day tomorrow which may be the most significant. Besides ethnic reconciliation, God has been putting His finger on the denominationalism and division of the churches. We plan to continue this theme tomorrow. Please pray for true healing of disunity and the birthing of a united prayer movement among the leaders and churches. Already the leader of the largest denomination (600,000 members) said the Lord has spoken to him and he wants to begin cooperating with the other church leaders. Others have said or prayed the same. We also plan to move into the area of spiritual warfare to come against the spiritual powers which have been freely working to incite violence, revenge and murder. There is a significant level of witchcraft and occult involvement even by people in government which has opened the door to many manifestations of spiritual darkness. Please pray for a complete renunciation of the ancient spirits of the land and the covenants made with them. Thanks so much for standing with us. May Burundi be healed and transformed and become "a praise in the earth" (Isaiah 62:6-7). _________________________________________>>> *GUATEMALA CELL CHURCH: 19,000 >From: friday_fax@attglobal.net Ronny Madrid is the associate pastor of the Showers of Grace church in Guatemala City. The aim of the church was to reach their city with the gospel - but they did not know how. They had heard of Korean pastor Yonggi Cho's cell church concept, but believed the two cultures too different to adopt the structure for their city. "Then we were both shocked and inspired to hear of a cell church of 30,000 in neighboring El Salvador. Some still said that it would not work in our city, for whatever reason,", he says, "but that's simply a mental attitude. Those who act also see the fruit." The church now has an attendance of some 19,000 on a typical weekend. Church life takes place in hundreds of cell churches. Other churches in Guatemala are now also learning that the impossible is possible, "and it is not uncommon for churches which previously had 80 members to now number 300 or 400," he says. The attitude of the church toward world mission has also changed: until 18 months ago, the church had almost no missionary vision beyond Guatemala. They were, however, open for outside input. Rich Jackson was sent out by the American Perimeter church to help Showers of Grace develop an international mission. The first fruits are already visible: at the first missions conference in 1999, over 2000 people showed interest in long-term missions. And yet most of us know that the greatest damage done to the kingdom of darkness and the greatest advancement made in extending the boundaries of God's Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven are when God's people come together to seek His face and pray in one accord. The book of Acts is a testimony to the power and efficacy of united, corporate prayer. In Acts 4:31, we read, "After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly." It has been said, "Much prayer, much power. Little prayer, little power. No prayer, no power." "Prayer is the key to the Kingdom," according to the old Negro spiritual, "I've Got a Key to the Kingdom." And in conclusion, the song sings, "And the world can't do me no harm." >From March 8 to April 16, 2000, millions of people will set aside their comforts, agenda and responsibilities for a season to solely seek the face and favor of the LORD in prayer and fasting. America is in desperate need of revival and spiritual awakening. It has been almost 150 years since a revival of the Christian faith has swept this nation. We are long overdue for the Father's blessing to be poured out among us in abundance. THE TIME FOR REVIVAL, AN OUTPOURING OF GOD'S GRACE, MERCY, TRUTH AND LOVE, IS NOW!!! You may be thinking, "I'm in agreement with you, Martin. Our country desperately needs a supernatural touch from God that will change the course of her destiny. What then shall I do? How then shall I live?" The answers to these questions are: "PRAY, ASK, SEEK AND KNOCK, UNTIL GOD ANSWERS IN AN UNPRECEDENTED WAY!" It has been said, "History belongs to the intercessors." With this in mind, you are cordially invited to play a significant role in turning the tide of history. I am asking the LORD to raise up a committed corps of intercessors from every age group, gender, ethnic background, socioeconomic status, local church, neighborhood and marketplace all over this nation who will willingly "stand before [God] in the gap on behalf of the land..." (Ezek. 22:30). Are you willing to join me in this endeavor? If so, please read over the attached prayer calendar, and pray daily and often, alone or with your prayer group, as if prayer were going out of style. Make an effort to relate to your best friend, Jesus, as much as possible in these forty days of Lent, which commemorate Jesus' extended time of communing with the Heavenly Father in the wilderness as he was tempted by the devil, before he began his public ministry. Thank you for your prayerful participation and support in this meaningful endeavor to unite believers all across this land and world You and your prayer group or church will never be the same as a result of your obedience to Christ's call to "watch and pray" (Matt. 26:41). I have been deeply impacted." said Pastor Ed Russo, Chairman of local organizing committee. The cultures of the nations gathered to celebrate in Tampa, Florida from February 25 - 27 this year. As the lights went up at the USF Sun dome, a parade of flags from thirty-five nations heralded the beginning of a weekend of worship that would take the conventional the general church is accustomed to, to a new level. Koreans, Africans, Polynesians, Australians, Europeans, Latin Americans, Native Americans and more participated in celebrating Jesus in a variety of color, costumes and music. One could not help but reflect of Revelation 7: 9, 10 as the Tour progressed. It was truly a reflection of every tribe, language, nation and tongue worshiping before the throne of God. As the name would suggest the three-day Called to Honor Him Tour is about worship - but not worship as we have known it until now. It is about worshiping God with the uniqueness, beauty and dignity that He has placed within every culture. It is the sound of the people of God who are 'Called To Honor Him', from indigenous to western, rising in harmony to celebrate the Creator of the Universe who delights in diversity and desires to see the cultural expressions of His people come forward to worship Him. Says Island Breeze founder and president Sosene Le'au, "The Called To Honor Him Tours and Conferences is a vehicle to reach out to the multiculturalism of the church in the cities of North America. It brings the cultural music and dances of the nations, some of which have never been heard or seen in the church, to a place of freedom in worship." In its launch in Tampa, Florida, 40 churches and local organizations united to co-host the tour with Island Breeze. "We have seen how the Called To Honor Him Tour can heal racial wounds and impact our city for God," said Pastor Bobby Rodriguez. "The churches must get involved. It will broaden your capacity to embrace other cultures and show you more of who God is." The First Nations grand chiefs and tribal leaders from Native American communities across North America, along with Seminole representatives from the local reservation kicked off the event with a protocol ceremony. As host people, they welcomed the international participants onto the land, and gave their blessing to the event. >From that point on, the stage exploded into life, the Native Americans in their colorful regalia with 120 drums, over 50 local kids doing the hip hop and freestyle dancing, the colorful pageantry of Latin America, the exhilarating sounds of the African drums, the graceful swirls of Korean fan dances, the breathtaking sounds of Australia's digeridoo, the electrifying Samoan "fire knife" dance, and the rhythmic sounds of America all backed by a group of international musicians. The highlight of each evening was the altar call when people responded to breaking away from cultural bondage and prejudices to finding freedom in Christ. "God set me free from all my misconceptions of Christianity. When I saw the Korean fan dances, I felt like God set me free from cultural prejudices that have held me back from totally entering into His fullness. God wants the dances and the music of my people to honor Him." Said Richard Nunez, a Native American from paradise, California. "I was in tears when the performers on stage danced to the conga beats. I saw the beauty and the excitement of my culture (Latin American). but how must I respond? Should I just clap my hands or can I have the freedom to truly express what is being stirred in my heart?" commented a pastor's wife. For all involved, the Called To Honor Him Tour was a life-changing event. For some, it meant salvation. For others, it was a challenge to broaden their concept of what worship in the church should look like. "I have written many worship songs with the influence of western music. After the Called To Honor Him Tour, I was challenged......what have I done for the music of my people," said South African songwriter David Klassen. For many, a healing of racial wounds and experiencing the freedom to worship God as who they really are. "I believe the message of cultural redemption is a very timely one for the new millennium we are entering into," says Sosene Le'au. "We are excited about taking this message across North America and seeing the diversity of the body of Christ released in freedom to worship God in His fullness." In every meeting a strong sense of God's presence, moving the hearts of many to repentance, reconciliation and fervent prayer to the Lord for the healing of the nation. Your prayers were answered abundantly, and I think all agreed that we had the breakthrough we asked for under point 1 below. This should encourage us to continue trusting God for the rest of the points 2-6. Our team was told again and again that humanly there was little or no hope and that the Arusha peace talks led by Nelson Mandela are at a sensitive and difficult stage due to the unremitting pressure of extremists on both sides. Everyone is desperate for a solution, both church and political leaders. Only the sovereign Lord can save this little East African nation from a further bloodbath and the all-out genocide her neighbor, Rwanda, experienced. Our team of 11 from six countries functioned with beautiful unity as if we were one person. We definitely also had His anointing, guidance, boldness and spiritual discernment for every session. Thanks so much for supporting us. Here are some of the highlights: 1. A three-day seminar on "Strategic Prayer for the Healing of a Nation" for 150 church leaders from all denominations including both Protestants and Roman Catholics. The theme was taken from 2 Chron. 7:14. The Lord seemed to be focusing on root issues involving ethnic and denominational division, doing 'heart surgery' on all of us. Tutsis, Hutus and Twa publicly confessed the sins and crimes of their people groups against each other amidst much weeping and deep brokenness. Our team wept right along with them. 2. A prayer breakfast with about 60 of the top political leaders in the country at which one of our Rwandan team members urged them not to go down the same road as Rwanda had. A prophetic word by another team member based on Isaiah 61 also spoke to them. Then we held hands and prayed with all our hearts that God would save and heal the nation. 3. Church leaders discussed the questions "What ways do the powers of darkness manifest themselves in Burundi? What are the controlling spirits operating here?" Responses included things like adultery, murder, stealing, deceit, poverty, division, political and economic corruption as manifestations of their influence. The spirit and ongoing practice of witchcraft was mentioned as well as continuing involvement with Kiranga, the ancient indigenous god of the land due to still prevalent syncretism. At the end of the discussion it was revealed that the leaders of the nation had dedicated Burundi to the 'Queen of Heaven' in 1961. (This goddess is not actually the Virgin Mary but a high-level principality of darkness and destruction which originates from Babylonian religion and is found throughout the world under different names (Ishtar, Astarte, Aprodite, Athena, Diana, Kali etc.). Very significantly, someone mentioned that the cycle of violence and killing between ethnic groups started just the year after this dedication in 1962. Several strong prayer warriors then came forward to pray strongly and authoritatively for the breaking of covenants made with these powers and for their exorcism from the land. It was an intense and loud time of crying out to the Lord. 4. Ambassador Cyprien, who represents Burundi's government at the Arusha Peace Talks and is responsible for deliberations related to peace and security, closed the prayer initiative. He asked our continuing support in prayer for the talks which are at a very sensitive and difficult stage. Later two of us met with him privately, encouraging him to include prayer as a feature of the talks so the Lord can give wisdom to the participants and bring the breakthrough for which they are longing. 5. A dinner with over 100 senior officials from the government and military afforded the opportunity for our team to share what had happened during the initiative and to exhort them to seek the Lord with all their hearts rather than only rely on human strategies for the resolution of the conflict. They seemed to take the message to heart. When I asked the former president with whom I happened to be sitting whether we had persuaded him to become an intercessor, he told me: ?There is no other solution.? 6. The final morning before departure our team met with local World Vision staff for a time of sharing and prayer for their work and commissioning of those who have been asked to lead World Vision?s ongoing prayer effort for our work in the nation. Here are the prayer concerns sent to you before the initiative. God has answered and is answering the first. Let?s keep trusting for the others (2-6) to unfold as well. I will update you as further information becomes available. 1. For the Lord?s anointing and guidance for our team and the participants in order to have unity, boldness, and spiritual discernment. May there be a breakthrough in repentance and reconciliation bringing transformation to all present and for their nation. 2. For political stability, restoration of peace and security along with an end of the war and healing of the ethnic rift between Hutus and Tutsis. 3. For the closing down of the resettlement camps and that those displaced will be able to return to their homes. 4. Christian testimony and integrity, especially among church and other national leaders, and for the church in Burundi to become united as one body in Christ. 5. Binding and overthrow of the spirits of division, hate and violence. Repentance for syncretism, involvement in idolatry and the occult and a closing of the door to destructive spiritual forces. 6. Economic blessing and wellbeing for Burundi and its people. Thanks so much for your ongoing support in prayer to the One who heals and transforms nations (Rev. 22: 1-3), John Robb _________________________________________>>> *COLUMBIA: TRANSFORMATIONS >From: "Crosswalk.com" Drug lords in Medellin, Colombia, are turning to the Lord of Lords. Fourteen of 17 members of a drug cartel that once ruled the city have professed faith in Christ, said Maria Estrada, who started a ministry in Colombia's Bellavista Prison. More than 300 prisoners belong to a church there, she told Discipling a Whole Nation. Notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar professed faith in Christ just days before his death, Estrada said. Escobar called her one day and they began a correspondence that culminated in his "giving his life to God," DAWN said. Since then 13 others have become Christians and confessed their crimes, Estrada said. Two have been freed from prison and are serving as missionaries in other countries, she said. _________________________________________>>> *PRAYER EVANGELISM WORKSHOPS IN KOREAN & SPANISH Great Commission Prayer Conference Saturday, April 15 Prayer Evangelism Conference Workshops For Everyone In Your Church Praying Your Friends To Christ ( in Korean, Spanish, and English) Grow A Great Commission Prayer Ministry In Your Church (in Korean, Spanish, English) Prayer Training for Ethnic Churches Lighthouses Of Prayer Everywhere What Can Happen When Women Pray?
