2. PPG: FRENCH POLYNESIA

>From: “Edualdo & Aline Cicero” <revivalnet@mail.pf>

My wife and I serve the Lord in French Polynesia (South Pacific). We are in charge of a church under the leadership of Rev. Earl Thurner whose ministry is based in Maui (Hawaii). Our new church plant is called “Eglise du Plein Evangile de Polynésie” (Full Gospel Church of Polynesia) and got officially registered in November 1999. Our overall vision and heart is to see a powerful work of revival being started within the hearts of believers and entire churches in order to bring in the harvest of souls God has for Himself in this nation. We believe God will deeply transform this nation at many other levels (socially, economically, politically) with the thrust of missions to the nations that will come out of this transformation. However, we realize how intrenched religious spirits have been in this nation along with distrust and lack of unity in the Body of Christ.

So we rejoice as the Lord is allowing a small breakthrough since the beginning of December 2000 when we started meetings on Thursday mornings with 2 other pastors of this island of Moorea (Protestant and SDA). Along with them we also have had an evangelist at times and other lay leaders of Christian groups who have come all the way from Tahiti. Right now we feel the focus should be on pastors and lay leaders getting to know each other and building up trust and fellowship with one another while also spending some time in prayer for the nation and for one another.

We would appreciate any help and support we can receive from you since I believe you might have gained some insights in this kind of endeavors. Of course we are dealing here with a different set of mindsets and cultures.  Your prayers are more than welcome.

God bless you as you bless many through your valuable input,

Edualdo & Aline Cicero

3. RUSSIANS REACHING RUSSIANS

>From: Ray Miles <rhm@christianaid.org>

Life was a struggle for Pietr, raised in a Christian home in Soviet Russia.  His father was the pastor of a small fellowship that had to meet in secret. However, this only strengthened young Pietr’s resolve to one day be a pastor himself.  He wanted to reach the thousands of Communists in his city with the Gospel of Jesus.  Pietr shares how his heart would break as he looked into the eyes of people walking down the street.  He saw despair, pain, and fear.

Pietr’s dream became a reality.  Discipled by his father and then trained at a Bible school in the Ukraine, Pietr has planted a church in his native city in Russia.  He shares Christ with a passion born of conviction.  He feels the desperate need to tell all of his own people about Jesus Christ.  Pietr is an apostle to his people.

Today, Pietr has led hundreds of Russians to Jesus Christ.  He has started a Bible school, planted several churches, and has an outreach to street children.  The past few weeks have seen several hundred Russians come to Christ through the ministry of Pietr’s fellowship.

This has not been an easy road for Pietr.  Starting out under the rule of the Communist oppression, he knew that he could go to jail at any time.  With freedom came new opportunities, as well as new challenges.  The economy fell and most Russians struggled just to survive.  Many workers have not been paid for months, and yet Pietr’s needs have always been met.  The ministry that he began has flourished in the midst of these difficult times.

Christian Aid has begun to assist Pietr and the ministry that he now leads. With the small help that has been provided, the work has been advancing fast.  Bicycles help indigenous missionaries get more quickly from one place to another - despite petrol shortages and price hikes.  Gospel literature can be left at the homes of people visited, in bus stations, on the train, and at newspaper stands.  Pray for this ministry, that they would continue to see much fruit and that the Gospel would keep moving forward.

4. AMSTERDAM 2000 - LIVES ON THROUGH PRAYER >From: “Marilyn Orton” <SPEAKING@worldnet.att.net> Hello Friend, I really like your site.  I was one of the staff to oversee the prayer room at Amsterdam 2000.  You may like to know that all of the written prayer requests from the prayer room where typed on sheets, and distributed to prayer groups in different parts of the Country.  Also, I have personally handed out the index cards with the prayer requests on them, to people who have committed to pray faithfully, and daily for the request.  So, the prayers continue around the world for those who posted prayer requests at Amsterdam 2000.

Keep up the good work, Marilyn Orton

5. LITHUANIA: PRAYER EVANGELISM

>From: Friday Fax  <FridayFax@DawnEurope.net>

An 8-strong team from Schoenhausen near Magdeburg and two Swiss women planned an evangelistic outreach in Lithuania in the summer of 2000.  Silute’s and Schoenhausen’s Evangelical churches are partners. The outreach was planned to last three weeks. “God had other plans for me; he asked me ‘Are you prepared to stay three months?’”, says Regina Glass. The following are excerpts from her report: “Following the collapse of Communism, many Christians have turned to Consumerism or have fallen into the traps of New Age streams or sects. Many churches, also in Silute, have no pastor. As trained preacher in the Evangelical State Church, I assumed responsibility for teaching and counselling for three months, together with Margrit Luescher from Switzerland. Every evening, we held two hours of Bible study. Over 70 people gave their lives to Jesus, and 5 inter-denominational home groups were planted.  At the end of each Bible study evening, we prayed together for the sick.  As a result of the miracles which God performed, many people came seeking healing, and found Jesus. One woman had a tumour on the left side of her head. On one Sunday, seven people prayed for her; the tumour disappeared, and she no longer needed an operation. A very fit 15-year-old girl had fallen into a deep depression, because doctors had diagnosed that she was suffering from an incurable blood disease. After she gave her life to Jesus and had been filled by the Holy Spirit, we prayed for her healing.  Following the next blood test, her doctor spoke of a miracle - her blood was completely normal! A truck driver had suffered from frequent headaches, was unable to move his right arm freely and was woken by pain at night following an accident 25 years previously. After starting to follow Jesus, he suffered from intense headaches, which disappeared immediately following prayer. As a result, his daughter-in-law also gave her life to Jesus. We also prayed that God would heal his right arm, and the prayer was again answered immediately. His wife repeatedly invited friends to come, and seventeen of them decided to follow Jesus, and many of them were healed or freed from demonic bondage. The couple’s son had suffered a slipped disc at the age of 25, and his doctor recommended an operation soon. The parents and son had come to Jesus, a number of Christians prayed for the young man; two days later, the was able to return to his physically demanding work.  Following a talk titled ‘What does Rudolf Steiner’s teaching have to do with Jesus Christ?’, twelve Kindergarten teachers gave their lives to Jesus. Even as we prayed for them, God performed miracles and healed. The head of the Kindergarten immediately started a weekly Bible study and prayer meeting.”

7. MEXICO CITY: “WE PRAY AND PRAY AND PRAY...”

>From: Marc van der Woude <joel-news-international@xc.org>

Christian leaders and missionaries in Mexico City relate the same

message: God is getting ready to move mightily in the world’s second

largest city. “People from every denomination in Mexico feel this is the

moment,” says Assemblies of God missionary Donna Bustos, dean of the A/G’s

Anna Sanders Bible Institute. “The gospel has never made a real impact

here. Satanic influence has had a stronghold in Mexico that has been

unchallenged.” In the lower-income Ixtapalapa section of Mexico City, a

revival is already under way. Ramiro Ruiz Lemus, pastor of Christian

Family Center and superintendent of the Mexico A/G’s southern district,

leads a growing congregation of 650 that has planted 12 daughter churches

in the past 18 years. Many who attend

are former gang members. Eight daughter churches are outside the Mexico

City area. “The key is prayer,” Lemus emphasizes. “We pray and pray and

pray.”   Source: AG-NEWS

>From: <fridayfax@dawneurope.net>

Moslem leaders at Cairo’s respected Al Azhar university have examined the Jesus Film, and reached the conclusion that it does not disparage Islam, so may be viewed by Moslems. Many Moslems have decided to follow Jesus after viewing the film, which is based on Luke’s gospel.

9. THE LARGEST MOVEMENT OF PRAYER IN THE HISTORY OF FRANCE

>From: JChevalme@aol.com

This year will see the largest movement of prayer for France in the nation’s history. Over 1000 French churches and prayer groups from many different denominations will be joined in forty days of prayer and fasting by hundreds of thousands of believers from over 30  nations.  They will be asking God to bring a significant change to the nation of France.

Multi language web site:

http://www.france2001.org

France has long been regarded as a spiritual desert, and is often called “The missionaries’ graveyard”.  It is one of the most unreached countries of the world, with Evangelical believers accounting for only 0.66% of its population. Of the 36,664 communities in France, 34,500 have no resident evangelical witness.  It is a land where Muslims out-number Evangelicals by 11 to one, and where 10 million people annually consult faith healers and clairvoyants.  The $41 billion thus spent is three times the amount paid to their family doctors!   The country’s image of prosperity, harmony and  happiness is contradicted by a reality where one in four live alone, 10% take medication for depression, 4 million are alcoholics and 40,000 young people attempt suicide every year.

And yet France has a great Christian heritage.   In the first centuries of the Christian era, the church in France was one of the strongest in the world.   Birthed in “Book of Acts” -style signs and wonders,  it had many great leaders. Irenaeus, the church father and bishop of Lyon, played a significant role in defending the world-wide church against heresy.  Martin of Tours established one of the first centres of missionary training in the western world.  In the centuries that followed the French church changed the course of many nations. Hundreds of missionaries left her shores, whilst many others came there for their spiritual training, Saint Patrick who evangelised the Irish, being one of the most well-known.  One thousand years later, another outstanding  move of God transformed the country, as dozens of preachers of the Reformation criss-crossed the land.  Establishing  hundreds of new churches they saw between twenty to fifty percent of the nation converted, depending on the region.

Today France prides itself on being a secular state.   It is against the law to teach about Jesus and the Christian faith in schools, whereas the study of Philosophy, Voltaire and Descartes is compulsory.  From childhood pupils are taught that the way to discover the truth is to “doubt” everything. Only that which can be proved to be absolutely certain is worthy of  belief.  Those who try to evangelise others, therefore, are viewed as coming from a brain-washing cult.

These factors  give the local church a tendency to be inward looking,  its main goal being the struggle for survival.  Evangelical churches are generally small (the national average is below 50 members), and spiritually weak.  Members often feel dissatisfied, and divisions are common.

But things are changing.  The first few weeks of the new millennium were marked by an unprecedented move of prayer in France.  Organised by a committee of leaders from several  different denominations and missionary organisations, over 500 churches and prayer groups took part in forty days of prayer and fasting.  This year other groups have got involved by organising their own regional or denominational prayer initiatives, all to take  place during the same 40 days,  leading up to Easter 2001.  It is anticipated that well over a thousand churches and prayer groups in France will pray and fast for their nation at that time.  They will be joined in prayer by hundreds of thousands of believers from around the world.  Intercessors from the USA, Canada (& Quebec), South America, Asia, Africa, many of the  European nations and the former French colonies,  even from the middle east and Asia, will be praying for France in their own countries.

40 Days of Prayer for France;  7th March - 15th April 2001

Points for Prayer

1) For those in France who have never heard the gospel; that there would be a significant move of conversion among all ages.  2) For the strengthening of the French churches; that every member  may become fully equipped for works of service.

3) For Unity among believers, often deeply divided.  4) For a healing of historic wounds and the removal of spiritual hindrances in the nation.

5) That the powers of darkness at work in France would be bound in Jesus’ name.

6) That a living, vibrant church would be raised up in every community.

7) That this nation would be transformed.

10. INDIA: 250 CHURCHES, 280 PASTORS & EVANGELISTS

>From: phillip timothy <philliptimothy@yahoo.com>

Greetings in the blessed name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I take this opportunity to introduce myself as the president of New Life Association, Philip Timothy.  Recently I visited your web site and praise God for the work you are doing in different countries.

We are also doing similar kind of work in India among tribal people and in small towns.  We are working among SORA hill tribles and dalits low cast hindus (Untouched people groups). Same Sora tribal people in two Indian states, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa.  We are working among Andhra Pradesh Sora tribal people these are more primitive than those in Orissa and also with low cast hindu people.

Sora Tribe: They live on the top of the hills they are hard working and depend on the forest hill crops only. They worship evil spirits and offer animal sacrifices to appease the spirits because they believe that all good and evil come from the supreme spirit only.  They practice black magic and witchcraft instead of using medicine. The village priests holds the spirits and sends the spirits to do harm to other human being as a result of that many people die.  These Sora tribe people smoke tobacco irrespective of age and gender and drink highly intoxicating self cooked liquor due to which their health spoiled.  Due to all these bad practices their financial standard.  The powerful gospel touched their lives and transformed.

In these people are much open to the gospel they were not happy with old traditional religion.  Now we have 250 churches, 280 pastors and evangelists.  Apart from the church planting work we concentrate on the social aspects also such as; education (night schools (elementary schools), health care (mobile clinics and dispensary), child care centers, orphan homes and children homes. All these projects are not regular since we are not associated with any mission organization, but as Lord enables we are doing.

We are doing similar work just like you. I had seen your mission statement and we agree with your faith. We like to have your involvement in this small work. We welcome your representative to visit us and witness the work and to encourage us in the work of the Lord. If you need any clarification and or information please let me know.

We serve the same God for the same cause Matt 28:18-20. So let us join our hands to make Jesus to many other nations. Need your valuable support.

Yours in His service, Philip Timothy (Missionary), President, New Life

Association

12. BEIJING: PRAYERWALKERS = CHRISTMAS CAROLLERS

>From: “Crosswalk.com” <newsletters@crosswalk.com>

(BP)--Prayerwalkers on a 12-day journey to intercede for an unreached people group in East Asia found a special blessing awaiting them on the last night of their December journey.

“It was our last night in the area, and we had yet to meet a Christian,” the team leader recounted. “We had walked all over the neighborhoods, had a day on the lake, explored by bike, and now I was journaling in bed after a 15-mile trek over several mountains.”

Then in the distance she and other team members heard loud gongs and strains of music representative of the people group for whom they had been praying.

“My partners and I got up to investigate. Throwing jackets over nightclothes, we left the gate to our inn and followed the music,” the team leader continued.

As they found the music makers, they realized the special gift God had for them that evening. “God wanted us to know that he did have followers here! Twenty-five or so young people were singing Christmas carols.”

The team quickly let the believers know that they too were Christians. Then they joined in the singing.

“When have I ever had so much fun?” the team leader rejoiced. “We sang for fellow church members. We sang for government leaders and their neighbors, for school administrators, and on and on. We were so caught up with the joy. I learned that the church was made up of at least seven different people groups, all meeting together to worship God, and that their joy was contagious.”

The prayerwalkers, having entered the area to pray for the unreached people group, departed with the joy of knowing that God had preceded them and was being glorified through the praises of local Christians.

13. SERVANTWORKS: A FRESH LOOK; RADICAL PRINCIPLES

>From: “Jim Larson” <jlarson@storie.com>

SERVANTWORKS PEOPLE

Servantworks is brand new,  It is made up of people who are seeking to follow Jesus in radical discipleship and Kingdom living in service to God to impact the world. While it begins with a U.S. office, the goal is for it not to be Western-centered, but truly international.

THE NEED: WHY SERVANTWORKS?

Servantworks is based on the belief that fulfilling the Great Commission ultimately does not depend on missionary strategies, but on fundamental changes in the behavior of average Christians and the functioning of average churches. Despite concerted efforts to reach the ends of the earth by year-end 2000, it has not happened. Will it happen if we continue with the same methods? It would seem unlikely. Instead we need to take a fresh look at the life of Jesus and the book of Acts, whose servant leadership God used to turn the world upside down.

Our cultures work against servant principles, invading our churches and our lives as the paths of least resistance. Living simply, raising up leaders to replace ourselves, giving truly sacrificially etc. are not supported by our cultures, and therefore Christians, lacking sufficient encouragement and accountability among each other, find such values difficult to maintain.

On the positive side, there is no shortage of great ideas in ministry, or of churches and ministries doing exciting things to reach certain people groups. There is always a need however to improve the way we communicate with and help each other, sharing not only our ideas but our time and resources. Servantworks is designed to contribute to both of these needs: to help Christians support each other in rejecting cultural norms in favor of Christlike norms, and to then encourage and serve each other through God-given creativity and talent.  In short, the goal of Servantworks is to help average Christians to love serving others sacrificially, and to become really good at it.

Purpose—

To glorify God by living lives of self-denial and promoting servant leadership principles and values around the world.

Core Values--

The Mustard Seed Principle (Matthew 13:31-32)

The Kingdom of God works in smallness.

We encourage small reproducing organizational models.

The Footwashing Principle (John 13:1-17)

The greatest in the Kingdom of God must be the least.

We encourage leaders to put others above themselves.

The Yeast Principle (Matthew 13:33)

The Kingdom of God is meant to infect all of society.

We encourage models of ministry that move the church into homes, workplaces etc.

The Treasure Principle (Matthew 13:44-46)

The Kingdom of God is worth giving up everything.

We encourage Œsacrificial¹ giving and lifestyle, applying all of our resources to reaching others.

The Wheat Grain Principle  (John 12:24)

The Kingdom of God grows when we give ourselves away.

We encourage leaders to seek to raise up others to replace themselves

The Child Principle (Matthew 18:1-6)

The weak, poor, & helpless are important in God’s kingdom.

We encourage ministry among the poor to be high priority for every believer.

The Widow Principle  (Mark 12:41-44)

The poor have much to give.

We encourage ministry that originates from the poor, including world mission sending.

14. NEPAL: CHARGED WITH PREACHING

>From: “isu” <isu@enet.com.np>

Dear Praying Friends in Christ,

Hearty Greetings from the Himalayan Country Nepal.

There are four Christian are in prison for one year because of they were preaching in a seminar in Rajbiraj-Saptari district. Timothy Rai, David Bhattarai, Prem bahadur rai and a Norwegian Torn Berg all four have been put in prison for over two months now. The charge against them is preaching Christianity and attempting to convert others into Christianity.  As the District court judge has decided them to put for one year in prison and others those who were been arrested about nine people they are released from the police custody.

On the day they were arrested David’s house was raided and searched by the police in the most inhuman way causing great distress to the family. Hindu fanatics were successful in arousing a big mob on the day the case went to district court. they virtually held the court room hostage and compelled the judge to give a verdict to send them to prison on baseless, ridiculous charge. the situation and mood were so ugly that the judge relented to the pressure of the people, who were shouting through a mike against the Christians, and ordered that they be put to prison, although no sentence has been fixed yet.

There are many Christian organizations but they don’t come in front and so the Christians are not recognized and respected from the society as well as Government. There is lack of unity among the Christians denominations which is very bad.

Of course we foresee more troubles for the Christians in this land. some very high officials of the Government of Nepal have an inborn, inexplicable anti-Christian feeling very similar to that of India. The growth of the church has become a greater worry for some officials than other ills of this suffering country.

Please do pray for the stop all activities against of the Christians and Christianity and may God control and gave wisdom to our Christian Leaders too, and do pray for the correction of the Christian community and pray for the strengthen the church and to grow the believers in the spirit and in the number as well.

Thanks, in Christ, Isu Jung karki, Editor- the mediator weekly, P.O.Box.6706, kathmandu,Nepal.

16. MEXICO CITY: CHURCH PLANTING INSTITUTE

>From: Enrique y Anita Beel <MexicoCityMissions@ByHisGrace.com>

We thank you for your continued willingness to come before the Lord on behalf of the Southeastern Mexico City ‘Clase Popular’ team.  We feel confident that God has begun great new works because of your intercession.  Recently, we resumed meetings with interested Mexican believers to plan for outreaches this summer.  Along with this planning, we have begun to advertise our upcoming church planting institute, Instituto Transformacion Urbana.

As you pray, please remember the following:

·        Prayer meetings will be held asking God to prepare laborers for outreach and church planting efforts in the southside of the city.

·        Several existing churches in our area have already received promotional information regarding the institute.

Please join us in praising God that as a team we all have had relatively good health.  Minor sicknesses and accidents often “pop up,” but our Father never ceases to fill us with the stamina needed to do His work.  Continue to pray that we will fill ourselves with HIS Word and His wisdom as we seek to serve Him.  May the grace of our Lord shine upon you as you come before Him in prayer.

Blessings,

19. OUTCRY: GLOBAL CAMPUS CONCERT OF PRAYER

>From: info@YouthWorkers.Net

Yet even now, declares the Lord, return to me with all your

heart, and with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Joel 2:12

On Saturday, April 7th, 2001 groups of Christians on college and high school campuses across the world will be joined together simultaneously via a live satellite television broadcast. The name of this event is OUTCRY. The focus of OUTCRY is to repent before God from our sins and the sins around us while seeking Him through fasting, prayer, and worship for revival on our campuses and around the globe.

OUTCRY will originate from 4 key campuses across the world. However, thousands will participate in this historic event by downlinking it in a large group. It is important that a large part of the Body of Christ is represented. Various key global Christian leaders, campus ministry leaders, and students will be facilitating the prayer during OUTCRY.  Several key worship bands from across the world will be also facilitating worship.

There is no charge to receive the broadcast. Many different Christian denominations and collegiate and high school ministries will be participating. OUTCRY is not focused on any one particular ministry or denomination as the sole focus will be on God.

Please visit the website http://www.outcrynow.org for more information on OUTCRY and to find out how any person, group, or campus can easily participate in OUTCRY. You can also email campusrenewal@xc.org with questions. Please visit the website first as it will answer most of your questions.  Also, please forward this email on to others you know.

21. US-MEXICO BORDER: PASTORS PRAYING & RECONCILING

>From: “Border Prayer Network” <bpraynet@elpasonet.net>

On Saturday, pastors and leaders from El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez,

Mexico came together for a dedication service after 120

churches signed up from three gateway cities (El Paso, TX; Las Cruces, NM;

and Cd. Juárez, Mexico) to form a Wall of Prayer

The Wall of Prayer began on September 1st, 2000 with a call for 120 churches to take the responsibility of praying and fasting one day for revival.

Pastors and leaders from the U.S. walked into Mexico over the Bridge of the Americas carrying a U.S. flag.  At the binational service, flags were exchanged, national anthems were sung, and pastors signed an agreement to work in unity to reach the lost in the border region for Jesus Christ.  Corporately we opened the gates for the King of Glory to come and transform our borderland.

The highlight of the service was when Pastor Sam Faraone asked forgiveness for sins committed against the Mexican people.  Mexican Pastor Armando Chairez, weeping, embraced Pastor Faraone as both men kneeled before each other.  Many were crying as the crowd them came together to exchange an embrace.

The border region has been described as the nations last frontier.  It is the fastest growing region in America and Mexico.  More than 2 million people live in the El Paso, Texas and Cd. Juárez region alone, which is separated only by the Rio Grande.

The need to cooperate in prayer and evangelistic efforts in our border region was greatly advanced at this historic event as Pastors and Leaders met together in humility, in repentance, in unity, and in one place.

The Wall of Prayer effort was successful in bringing churches together to pray and fast, and for unity.  In 2001, the ministry of Border Prayer Network, which coordinated the event, will continue to ask churches to stand in the gap for one day.  The 2001 effort will be called 24-7 Wall of Prayer.

22. SWAZILAND: STRATEGIC VISION FOR THE NATION

>From: fridayfax@dawneurope.net

>Source: OC International

Dean Carlson of OC International, a Christian strategy group, reports that Evangelical church leaders in Swaziland have decided to cooperate in reaching an evangelistic target. Inspired by Simon Mloko from neighboring Zimbabwe, who has planted 400 churches in the last 20 years, they aim to plant 1,800 new churches by the end of 2005, and train 1,800 new pastors.  Mloko will assist the national strategy as a mentor.

23. CALI, COLUMBIA: 1,000 NEW CHURCHES IN NEXT 14 MONTHS

>From: fridayfax@dawneurope.net

>Source: Dawn Report, Berna Salcedo

“There is a new sense of urgency and unity among Christians in Cali,” reports Dawn staff member Berna Salcedo. Cali is Colombia’s notorious drug capital, currently experiencing a power vacuum following the arrests of the most important drug barons in recent years, and is in economic and political decline, according to Salcedo. The country is generally politically unstable  because of the civil wars; people no longer trust the government, and many have given up hope. Two million Colombians have moved from the country into the cities, bringing their uncertainty and fear of the future. In the midst of this uncertainty, Cali’s population has become more open for the gospel, and the city’s pastors have agreed to an evangelistic framework, in which 1,000 new churches are planned between November 2000 and the end of 2001.  During his visit to Cali, Salcedo narrowly escaped a car bomb which exploded in a car stopped at a traffic light. Salcedo and a local pastor passed the car as the light turned yellow. Their car was damaged as the other car explored only seconds later, but they were unharmed.

24. PRAYER POINTS FROM THE NEW

WORLD CHRISTIAN ENCYCLOPEDIA

>From: Charisma News Service <webmaster@strang.com>

>By Andy Butcher

The newly published second edition of the World Christian Encyclopedia, an exhaustive survey of global Christianity, contains good news. It notes that Christianity has become “the most extensive and universal religion in history,” with some 2 billion adherents—one in three of the world’s population—at the start of the new millennium.

The last century has also seen a huge shift in the racial makeup of believers globally, from 81 percent white in 1900 to 55 percent non-white last year.

But the fine print of the massive publication also contains some disturbing information. Among the startling findings of the research team are that:

·        More money is embezzled from the church each year ($16 billion) than is given to foreign missions ($15 billion).

·        Some parts of the world traditionally considered “unreached” are more responsive to the gospel than areas typically viewed as “harvest fields.”

·        180 million Bibles or New Testaments are lost annually because of poor production, bad planning or “hostility.”

·        Only 10 percent of the world’s 10,000 distinct religions are being seriously studied by Christians.

Produced by the World Evangelization Research Center (WERC) at the Global Evangelization Movement in Richmond, Va.—founded by renowned missions researcher David Barrett—the encyclopedia is considered to be the definitive reference book for religion scholars, students, missions leaders and clergy.

By analyzing costs of evangelism, baptism rates and other data, the researchers were able to come up with a response rate to the gospel for each country—which found Afghanistan, ruled by hard-line Muslims and closed to missionary activity, much more “responsive” than Argentina, home to a long-running revival.

“We feel that is one of the most significant mission findings in the book,”  said Todd Johnson, WERC director and one of the encyclopedia’s three authors. “People have insisted that you go where the ‘harvest field’ is, but [that depends on] how you quantify it.” The encyclopedia is “a way to understand the world,” he said “Understanding the world is absolutely critical in reaching it.”
