BUILDING
AN ACCOUNTABILITY TEAM
>From:
“SCOPE Training” <training@scopeministries.org>
--->NPPNote:
Distribute this training document to everyone in your Pastors’ Prayer Group or
Prayer Team, ask them to read it over, then return next time to discuss it’s
merits and applicability to your PPG or team...
God’s
Word is full of practical and proven principles which allows the Christian to
enjoy the fruits of fellowship with God and each other, all the while protecting
us against the temptations and testing which are so commonplace today.
One of the more practical principles is one, which is called
accountability.
Accountability
is the process whereby a Christian willingly and prayerfully consents to enter
into a mutual relationship with others to ensure that every area of their life
is honoring to the Lord Jesus and to their fellow Christians.
We see this principle in practice when Jesus chose twelve men - from
among many - to be His inner circle.
Within that group He had an even closer one made up of Peter, James and
John. (Luke 6:12ff)
The
Gospels show quite plainly that Jesus not only chose the Twelve to disciple
them, but also prepare them for ministry. In
essence these men became Jesus’ accountability group.
First
there was vertical accountability. Each
and every one of these men was accountable to Jesus.
Second,
there was horizontal accountability. The
inner circle was accountable to one another.
First
we find Him using the principle of iron sharpening iron - Proverbs 27:17.
These future leaders of the church had to learn to live together in unity
and harmony. (Psalm 133:1)
Second,
Jesus in His humanity needed these men, not only to pour His life into them, but
for them to be a witness to His sinless life so they could show that his
accusers were liars. (Luke. 7:33,34
and Hebrews 4:15)
Third,
as Jesus had to learn obedience, so these men too needed to learn it. (Hebrews
5:8)
What
kind of relationship existed within this inner circle?
We see that Jesus taught them to be servants to each other, as He was a
servant to them. (John 13:5ff) They
ministered together in prayer, in helping others, and in danger. Also, they were
friends! (John 15:15) Men who risk their lives together form an inseparable bond.
If Jesus felt the need for an inner circle, an accountability group, then it
would benefit us to follow His example. God never intended for Christians to
minister alone! From Genesis, when
God told Adam that it was not good for him to be alone, until now, this
principle has prevailed in the Church. It is interesting that the word
‘alone’ means to be isolated. One
of the tricks of the devil is to isolate Christians from others so they become
very vulnerable to his temptations. It
is a known and proven fact that when a Christian is in the company of other
Spirit-filled believers he or she is far less vulnerable to the schemes of
Satan. As bad company ruins good
morals, so good company can protect good morals.
Probably
no other position in the Church offers so much reward and yet faces so much
danger than the Evangelist. Satan
hates anyone who is presenting the Gospel.
Since the Evangelist is the setting the pace for the Church, he singles
him out for destruction if possible. This
alone makes it important for the Evangelist to have an inner circle - an
accountability team. There are certain steps to follow in setting up an inner
circle.
First,
you must be convinced of the necessity of such a step.
Examine your own heart to make certain that you are willing to undergo
the scrutiny of men with whom you minister - check your own heart and attitude.
Next,
carefully pray about whom you desire to be on your team, your accountability
group. It is interesting that
the only recorded time in the Gospels that Jesus prayed all night was when He
chose the Twelve. (Luke 6:12) Prayer
is crucially important! Make
certain of the men you want on your team.
Third,
as you establish your own inner circle, there are certain things that are
important to consider. For yourself
it is a willingness to be transparent, teachable and vulnerable to those who are
part of your team. There must be a
mutual accountability. For those
whom you want to serve with you look for these character qualities:
1.
Diversity - you will want people from different backgrounds and walk of
life.
2.
Godliness—you will want only godly men and women as part of your inner
circle.
3.
Integrity - you will want men and women of the highest moral caliber.
4.
Friendship - you will want people you enjoy being with.
5.
Like-minded - you will want someone who is in agreement with your
ministry.
6.
Honesty/truthfulness - you will want someone to tell you what you need to
hear as well as what you want to hear.
7.
Burden bearer - you will want someone who will help you to carry the
burden of life and ministry.
8.
Time commitment - you will want someone who is willing to take the time
necessary to be a part of your inner circle.
9.
Prayer - you will want someone who will pray with you and for you
consistently.
10.
Transparency is absolutely necessary in an Evangelist’s inner circle.
There
must be a mutual willingness to allow the spotlight to focus on every area of
one’s life and ministry - a mutual submission to one another.
Secrets breed isolation, and isolation makes one vulnerable to the
attacks of the enemy.
Fourth,
it is important that you speak with each person you want to be in your inner
circle personally. Challenge them
to be a part of your accountability team, asking them to prayerfully consider it
as a calling. Make certain they
understand the responsibility of being on your team.
Fifth,
meet consistently for prayer and fellowship.
Learn to share your life and ministry with these men or women.
Use your team to honor God and edify each other.
Finally,
keep in mind there is safety in a multitude of counselors.
(Proverbs
11:14)

PASTORS GROUP: UNIFIED IN PRAYER
>From:
Joel News <MarcvanderWoude@XC.Org>
Pastors
in Prineville, Oregon (Crook County/Central Oregon) have signed a covenant to be
unified in prayer, and declared “Jesus as Lord over Crook County”. On August
3, pastors representing different denominations, went to the heart of the State
of Oregon (Post, Oregon), and together drove four stakes into the ground,
declaring the “Blood of Jesus,” “Revival,” “Reconciliation,” and
“The Kingdom of God.” Each stake was placed facing the North, South, East
and West. The pastors then took communion together, and prayed specifically to
the North, South, East and West asking God to release all prayers that have been
prayed to Him on behalf of the county and state over the past decades. The
pastors then prayed and prophesied over the state. As the shofars were blown,
the pastors wept over the heart of the state. Each week for the coming next
three weeks, pastors will once again meet together to drive stakes into the
ground around the county. It is the desire of these pastors to claim on Earth,
what is in Heaven (Matthew 18:18).

across the city on November 17 at 7:00 p.m.
The locations include Lakewood Church, Brentwood Baptist Church, First
Methodist Church of Houston (west campus) and Houston Christian Korean Church.
This
will be a joy-filled gathering of all God’s people representing the beautiful
diversity of the churches across denominational, racial and cultural boundaries.
Together we will celebrate the goodness of our Lord Jesus Christ through
a time of singing, prayer and thanksgiving.
We have nothing to proclaim but Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
Will
you begin praying daily that the Lord will be honored in this gathering of his
church? Will you plan to attend one

*SAN ANTONIO, TX: PASTORS PRAYING LIKE NEVER BEFORE
From:

Thanks
for the e-mail and the invitation to subscribe to the National Pastors Prayer
Network. I’m interested in being a part of your network, please add me to the
list and send me information via e-mail about what God is doing in other cities
across America and the world.
Next,
I like to tell you about what God is doing in our city San Antonio.
Last year in November,
many Pastors and denominations, races, nationalities gathered at
Cornerstone Church (John Hagee’s church) for the first international
Reconciliation Conference (city wide) where we saw
the glory of God visit our city during that three day event. Many
denominational and racial walls were broken and new relationships started. Many
Pastors are now praying together like never before. Just this past summer 75
Pastors and lay people went to Russia to do mission work. Some went to Africa to
be part of the unity for Africa “World Congress on Reconciliation” held in
Owerri, Nigeria in August, 2000.
Speakers
at the conference last year included John Dawson, Francis Frangipane and many
others. On October 19 -21,2000 at Alamo City Christian fellowship located at
6500 North IH 35 in San Antonio the second city wide reconciliation event will
take place. The Churches participating this year have doubled that of last year.
Again, we have the pleasure of having John Dawson and many others as speakers at
this year’s event. The admission is free, there is a $25 per person
international dinner on Thursday (19th) at 5:00 P.M. (Optional).
The seating facility of the Church, venue of the conference is only
limited to 3,500 persons. Every one is invited, pastors and non pastors. For
more information please call 210 -654- 7880 (Church). Last year we had pastors
from 15 nations that attended the conference.
Please get the word out to pastors in your network!
Thanks
for the good work you are doing for the king.

*MIAMI-DADE, FL: PASTORS PRAYER SUMMIT - “WOW”
>From:
“Woodbury, Nick” <nwoodbury@LAM.ORG>
The
5th Annual Miami-Dade Pastoral Prayer Summit, held at Lake Placid,
September 18-21 of the year in progress, was a magnificent time of meeting with
our Heavenly Father to hear what He would say to us concerning our personal walk
with Him, our families and our Ministries.
One pastor described it with one word—“WOW.”
Another described it with one “HEY!!!!
shout. Another said,
“awesome,” another
said, “I was changed.” And
so it went for everyone that seized the moment to get alone with God for 4 days
to worship and pray together—for each one and for the city where we as His
“lamp stands” minister.
Altogether
we had 55 pastors and ministry leaders from 18 denominations 2 independent
groups and 6 para-church groups. We
had worship and prayer in English, Spanish, and Portuguese (we had other
languages but these were the common ones heard throughout the time).
We were Anglos, Hispanics, Afro-Americans, Haitians, Portuguese and
Caribbean Islanders. The largest
group was the English speaking group followed by the Spanish speaking group.
All in all we were some of what the book of Revelation states “...from
every tribe, people and tongue.” By
the time the 4th day arrived we were of one heart, one spirit, one
vision, one purpose—to know God better than we know anything else and to
delight in Him better than we delight in anything else in the world. And to pray
for the City where He wants us to pastor.
It just was an awesome experience.
Brokenness
seemed to be the theme that God placed in our hearts. There was repentance,
confession, reconciliation as well as experiencing forgiveness, joy and
renewal.I believe those of us that seized the moment will not be the same again.
We realized, in a fresh way the idolatrous and adulterous ways of our personal
lives and ministries. God has
always used a small group of committed persons to accomplish His will, and I
believe that this small group of 55
[if we think in terms of the 1300 churches in Miami-Dade] will be used of God in
mighty ways in the future because they met with Him, repented, confessed and
made themselves available to HIM.

Ortiz, Facilitator, Mission Miami

Evangelicals
are beginning to win more respect in secular intellectual circles, a sociologist
says. Alan Wolfe of Boston College took a close look at Wheaton College, Calvin
College, and Fuller Seminary, and discusses the trend in The Opening of the
Evangelical Mind, an article in the October Atlantic Monthly magazine.
Evangelicals have ranked “dead last in intellectual stature” of all
America’s religious traditions, but are changing, Wolfe wrote. “Evangelical
scholars are writing the books, publishing the journals, teaching the students,
and sustaining the networks necessary to establish a presence in American
academic life.”
Wolfe
says evangelicals have made progress since 1994, when Wheaton scholar Mark Noll
published The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind, criticizing fundamentalism. Noll
faulted fundamentalists for having what he called an unwarranted self-confidence
that “casually discounted the possibility of wisdom from earlier
generations.” The book, Noll said later, “came very close to being my letter
of resignation from the evangelical movement.”

BRINGS 500 TOGETHER FOR PRAYER
>From:
Mission Houston <jhmh@flash.net>
As
the body of Christ continues to learn how to be a body, I think it helps us all
to see pictures of what it could look like.
This report from the North Channel area of the city is one such picture.
On the day of the “See You at the Pole” churches came together for a Rally
that evening at North Shore High School Auditorium. The Pastors Prayer Group
from the area organized the rally and approximately 500 people from 12 or so
churches attended.
This
report regarding the event comes from Robert Hughes, Mission Houston catalyst in
that part of the city. It was a
great time of worship, prayer, and celebrating the results of the student led
prayer at each of the schools.
The
evening began with a praise band and team, made up of singers and
instrumentalist from several congregation, leading us in worship for about 20
minutes. After the worship time a video was shown which had been made that day
at each of the schools in the area. It was a great time of cheering and joy and
the teenagers saw their schools in the video. Following the video was a season
of guided and focused prayer led by five pastors, one teacher (who sponsors the
student for Christ on the North Shore High School Campus,) and a student. We
prayed altogether, silently, in small groups, and in Spanish.
Several
of the Pastors who have not been attending the weekly prayer time made a
commitment to begin participation. Praise the Lord!

*FT. WAYNE, IN: 55 PASTORS AT PRAYER SUMMIT
>From:
PastorsInPrayer@aol.com
I
returned home this week from our seventh Pastor’s Prayer Summit in Holland,
MI. 55 pastors from the Ft Wayne
area met for four days of prayer. It’s
amazing as we focus on the Lord, seeking His face and not His hand, how the
perspective changes. I like what
David says in Psalm 46, “Step out of the traffic!
Take a long, loving look at Me, your high God, above politics, above
everything.” (The Message)
I
see myself and the sin of being too busy and not taking enough time to focus on
my Lord. That leads me to my
relationship with my wife Marilyn. It
was so with most of the pastors last week.
We cried out to the Lord to forgive us for neglecting our wives.
We saw them in His light and our voices blended in thanksgiving for our
helpmates. [ Marilyn and I celebrate our 47th year of marriage this
November 21. Thank You Lord, Your grace continues to be exceedingly sufficient!

Our
group has been meeting since the beginning of August, 2000. One of our
participants made the call to me and my co-Pastor to meet for lunch to talk of
this possibility and others have come on board since then, all with the same
burden to see our community rocked for the kingdom. At this point we have 9
local Pastors attending, with commitments from others to join us soon.
Denominationally, we range from S. Baptist, to Independent Bible Church, to 4
square churches. Our focus is to pray for transformation of our community.
Though centered in the town of Mililani, we are focusing on the “Central
Oahu” area, which includes a few other subdivisions and towns as well. Some of
our members are from those surrounding areas.
We
meet each Tuesday of the week at noon (foregoing our lunch) and pray strictly
for our community and for each other in our roles as Shepherd leaders of God’s
people. We are planning a combined presence at our local annual Christmas parade
(Dec. 2, 2000), with a combined prayer and praise time following. We are also
working on possibly having a combined, community wide Christmas Eve service as
an outreach event. As well, we are working toward completing a Spiritual Climate
Survey (Spiritual Mapping) of the Central Oahu area which we hope to have
completed and compiled by January 2001. We all sense that God is doing great
things in our area and that He is on the move in significant ways. Pray for us
and our community, that we will see clearly what God is doing and join Him in
His goals for this area. Pray as well for a large response to the Spiritual
Climate Survey.
Thanks
for your efforts in this area. Abandoned to Him, Pastor Green

*PRAY THE BAY: 4,000 PRAYERWALK SAN FRANCISCO
>From:
“Carolyn O’Brien” <Carolyn@lighthousemovement.com>
Pray
the Bay pulled together the leadership of many churches throughout the Bay Area
to cooperate in an effort to prayer walk every neighborhood in San Francisco on
September 2. Approximately 4-5
thousand people joined in this effort and approximately 80% of the city was
covered on that day. Harvest
Evangelism held several meetings in the city and had the opportunity to pray
over the mayor in one of the gatherings.
In addition a database was put in lace to identify and track the coverage
of each block. Christian Resource
Network integrated various software packages to help coordinate the effort.
This infrastructure will continue to serve the Bay Area for years to
come. King Anderson will give a
more extensive report at the Mission America Annual Meeting in St. Louis.

*TWIN CITIES, MN: TURNED TO TURN
The
Hawthorne and Jordan neighborhoods of north Minneapolis are experiencing some of
the highest areas of poverty in the Twin Cities. Violence, drug trade, prostitution and crime are just a few
of the symptoms of this poverty. Early in 1998, a few pastors invited TURN to
help them develop a ministerial alliance that could function as the leadership
of a more united church in the community.
After
a one and a half year process there is now a fully functioning ministerial
alliance in the Hawthorne and Jordan neighborhoods with a mission that states:
We
the Hawthorne-Jordan ministerial alliance are called by God to be witnesses to
and models of the ministry of reconciliation in Christ. Therefore, we are committed to be prophetic voices against
injustice, agents of community restoration and personal and social
transformation, and instruments of healing for hurting individuals and families.
Pastoral
staffs from at least fifteen different congregations are full members. TURN
facilitated the process and then stepped back and let the new alliance spread
its wings.

I
just ran across your site on the Net Ministries website. I wanted to take this time to say God bless to you for all
your efforts in helping to spread the gospel to those in need of spiritual
direction. We all have a role to play in this vast arena of Christian evangelism
and I commend you for your great work. God bless you for praying for people and providing not only a
forum by which people may submit their prayer requests, but also important
biblical information which is vital to anyone’s salvation. It is vital that we
as Christians continue to preach the Word of God to all who will listen ... for
we evangelize in the hopes of bringing more closer to God. Bless you for helping
to achieve this - you truly are providing a valuable service to all who come in
contact with your work. Prayer is
vital for it must be used to counteract the struggles which the enemy throws our
way each and everyday.
Please
if you have time pray for my struggling ministry as I try to reach alcoholics
and drug addicts. It is tough, but
I do my best and leave the rest in God’s hands.
Many years ago I was an alcoholic and today it is my mission in life to
help alcoholics and drug addicts come to the realization that true freedom may
only be obtained through Jesus Christ. I
truly do appreciate all your efforts. I will definitely be praying for you and
your good work. May the Lord
continue to bless you and all those around you. Visit my site if you have time.

*RESPONSES ~ PRAYING FOR UNCHURCHED CITIES
>From:
dincurl@juno.com
Great
idea to pray for church planting. Though I’m a pastor presently a
big
part of my heart is in church starts. One question about the stats on
the
calendar, yu seem to be using unchurched in a different way than usual
(that’s
OK). Some of the cities on your list have a considerably high
percentage
of people who are members of churches or attend churches than my
city,
Portland, Oregon. Some might say 1/2000 isn’t such a bad ratio if the
average
membership of the churches is 2000. Blessings, Rusty Dinkins-Curling
--->NPPNote:
Thanks Rusty, Encouragement is always appreciated. I simply took the numbers
from the Harvest folks, knowing there are several ways to look at the unchurched
field (others have made similar observations with varied perspectives) -
primarily seeking to encourage prayer for church planting in ALL our cities!

Greetingz!
I’m a church planter in Cols OH. Just
so I can communicate
reliably,
how are you defining “unchurched” in the ratios given for “30 most
unchurched
US cities?” Much much thanx!

Dan, We took the numbers straight from the Harvesting Churches Newsletter.

Many
of us in the Birmingham Area are praying and fasting for the upcoming Pastors’
Prayer Summit we have at Shocco Springs, October 29-November 1, 2000.
I agree with Doug Sheets on the urgency of our upcoming national election
and would urge that we add this to our prayer concerns.

*OCTOBER:
PRAY FOR YOUR PASTOR
>From:
Mark Simpson I <msimp53@mediaone.net>
I
ask that you take some time and energy to pray for and communicate encouragement
as you choose, to your pastor and minister.
“A
very heavy responsibility rests on all ministers of the Gospel. They are the
special targets of the enmity of men and devils. They observe very sad
backslidings and their hearts are wounded. They see millions perishing and their
spirits sink. They want the people
to profit from their preaching. They desire to be a blessing to your children.
They long to be useful to both sinners and saints.
Therefore, dear friends, intercede for those in the ministry. You do not
look to them but to the Master for spiritual blessings, yet how many times has
He given those blessings through His ministers!
The whole company of them, in the name of Jesus, beseech
you—“Brethren, pray for us.” (I Thess. 5:25) (Charles Spurgeon)
Gary
Bergel writes that they are the backbone of our nations. As the church goes, so
goes the nation, and as the ministers go, so goes the church.
“I
sought for the key to the greatness and genius of America in her harbors, in her
fertile fields and boundless forests, in her rich mines and vast world commerce,
in her public school system and institutions of learning. I sought for it in Her
congress and matchless Constitution. Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her
pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her power.”
(De Tocqueville, written in 1835) It
hasn’t changed, from nation to nation.
In
your country and mine, schisms abound over the creation of man, proper form of
government, abortion, feminism and family roles, ordination of homosexuals and
its acceptance, syncretism (the mixing of the Gospel with other religions, ideas
and spirits of error), occult teaching, idolatry, genetic experiments, political
madness and murder and persecution, and a host of other issues.
Relentless, these distract, weaken and tear at the Body of Christ. The
believing Church is the true moral and spiritual strength of the nation, and the
BACKBONE of this church is the preacher and teacher.
In
the U.S.A., 90% of our churches have 300 attending or less.
One in six churches have 50 attending or less.
The preachers in these often-forgotten assemblies to this day STILL
CONSTITUTE THE MORAL SPINE OF OUR COUNTRY. Without a Christ-honoring, holy,
Bible-believing and faithful clergy, our nation will see the wall that
withstands deadly winds collapse. Large
numbers of ministers even now are considering resigning, and few are arising to
take the place of those who do. In
the area I live in, it is commonplace to see churches spend 1 ½ to 2 years
replacing a pastor, even while it’s called a “seeker’s job market”
everywhere else.
I
pastor, but I also serve the ministries of River of Life, Evangelical Training
Association, and the Southeast Asia Prayer Center, that exist primarily to lift
up the hands of local church leadership in many ways, places and languages.
I see the wars that many face, first-hand.
Many expend 90% of the week’s energies just treading water, with little
left to intercede or plot vision for a faithful and victorious future.
I see 20% or less of the attenders doing 80% of the work.
I see large numbers missing from services for minor reasons. I see the
Internet and T.V. taking the place
of healthy, personal accountability to a servant of God.
And I see greater wars on the horizon.
So—will
you please pray, do, say something to and for your minister? I remember
preaching to some for years without hearing even one comment about how a message
helped them endure or understand something. After getting an encouraging card from an attender one day, I
remember calling them with tears and saying, “This message will get me by for
three months!!” May the Lord lead
you and others in your congregation this month. Do what Aaron and Hur did in
Exodus 17:9-13. Then watch God work.
Yours
with much love in Christ, Mark & Lois Simpson & family
