>From: David Mains
”In the relatively tiny international space station, astronauts and
cosmonauts work together side by side because of the importance of their
mission. Because our mission is far more strategic, it’s imperative that we
in the church learn to work together as well.”

>From: “Bob Fox”
I strongly encourage anyone trying to reach their community in
cooperation with other churches to connect with Mission America. They are
the main group ( 90 denominations and 300 para-church ministries) God is
using to bring the American Church together in cities for city-wide
evangelism and prayer leading to revival. Bob Fox

*CONVERSATION~~PPGs: DEALING WITH ISSUES
>From: prayunceasingly@juno.com
>By David Andrade

--->NPPNote: Hoping for your feedback. Especially if you have wisdom on
how to solve these and other issues that Pastors’ Prayer Groups face. Send
your comment to Updates@nppn.org <---

Just as churches are beset with conflicts and internal dissension, any
citywide movement will move through stages of growth. How leadership address
each plateau, deal with pertinent issues, then move the corporate fellowship
into focus will determine whether the outcome is deeper unity or a lack of
active participation.
Those in leadership most understand that they are servants of
empowerment. That all have gathered, with formed expectancies in retrospect
to the progress of prior meetings and relationship building. That the
highest passion is realized as each is encouraged to contribute by their
gifting in answer to the Holy Spirit’s call to advance God’s vision
corporately for the city. Should the gathering become the private agenda of
a few the vision will eventually fail. A city wide vision must be engrafted
in the hearts of those who partner with you long before it ever reaches the
streets.
United prayer creates the atmosphere that welcomes the Holy Spirit to do
His work. Just as there are attitudes inviting and uninviting to believers,
certain intentional decisions welcome the dwelling of the Holy Spirit, even
over the demographics of a city. When pastors meet for the first time
tension may be inevitable. Dividing the troops has always been a strategy
exercised by our enemy since the birth of the church. There are four main
areas of tension that often arise in an area wide movement, we will address
them briefly.

1. Cultural and Ethnic Conflict
Whenever spiritual leaders from diverse churches meet, they bring with them
cultural distinctive, defined by the ethnic group they represent. Often
conflicts that exist in society are manifested in the relationships that
church leaders have between one another. Affluent churches may unknowingly
communicate an attitude of superiority. Those with a formal education may
put the the less educated pastor on the defensive. Leaders from the larger
churches may assume that their opinions must be addressed more seriously.
There may be simmering racial tension in the community brought into the
leader’s gathering. It is essential that the facilitator be collegial, one
of genuine humility, able to coordinate a community of equals, keeping in
mind that the primary purpose is to come before God’s throne as leaders, all
saved by His grace. Conflicts and tensions must be discussed as they arise,
recognizing that the breaking down of cultural, ethnic, and economic
barriers among the spiritual leaders models unity for the whole community.
Thus city wide prayer movements can provide proactive examples of what will
take place in the community at large.

2. Personal Conflicts and Leadership Issues
We all are prone to weakness, egoism, and personality clashes. Add to this
the natural differences in temperament and leadership styles and invariably
conflict can arise. A clear communication of love and an intentional focus
on prayer will in most cases help resolve tension. Many pastors bring their
leadership roles with them to a citywide gathering. Strong willed aggressive
personalities tend to dominate. More gifted individuals tend to “project”
their gifts on others often
falling into the trap of feeling that everyone should share their passion
and that those who do not are insensitive to the needs of others. A city
facilitator should never be selected because of their strong personality or
”gift projection” because they will have a hard time integrating ideas that
are not their own.

3. Doctrine and Practice Issues
When diverse leaders meet in a city, some will be more at home with
liturgical forms of prayer, while others desire spontaneous and highly
emotive forms of prayer. There will be differing views to the nature of
spiritual warfare, baptism, evangelism, the work of the Holy Spirit,
communion, and worship. A citywide prayer movement de-emphasizes these
differences. Participants are affirmed in their convictions and encouraged
to practice them in their own church environment, but not to insist that all
hold to these practices in a corporate gathering. Issues of denominational
doctrine or practice should not be made an issue in these gatherings. As the
prayer meetings develop, the participants often relax their views to the
prayer experience of others. There is not one right way to pray, and all can
learn from one another. Charismatic believers, the discipline of silence and
liturgy, and those who favor more traditional forms of prayer, appreciation
for impassioned fervent prayer. We recommend that all exercise gracious
wisdom, so that all may receive the benefits of the prayer time and build
lasting pastoral relationships. Should the group decide to share in a
communion service or breaking of bread, good mutual planning will allow
respect to all traditions and further create cooperation for corporate body
ministry.

4. Management Issues
As city pastors prayer meetings and other intercessory groups meet there
often arise tension between the strategists who love to plan, organize, and
get things done and the prayer leaders who love to pray. Strategist are the
most reluctant to attend a prayer gathering, or return should their
expectancies become unrealized. Prayer leaders become frustrated when
meetings have all planning. The strategists become frustrated when there is
”all prayer and no action.” The solution is not an either/or but a all/and.
When all the gifts are empowered!
>The Pastor Coordinator envision the possibilities. Gifted as gatherers,
they infuse passion, but are not necessarily gifted in task management.
>The Strategist are gifted planners, networkers, task delegators, and
understand the mechanics of making a city vision work.
>The Prayer Coordinator, is a mobilizer of prayer.
Sub-groups should meet separately when planing special events, bringing
individual recommendations to the corporate gathering. In this manner
everyone is informed and the pastors prayer gathering can focus on prayer,
still allowing for a corporate forum of ideas and good planning practices.

*NEWARK, NJ: TRANSFORMING US’s THIRD OLDEST CITY
>From:
On Thursday, Aug. 24th, Fivefold Network held a “Gatekeepers Gathering”
where the topic of discussion and prayer was the transformation of the City
of Newark, NJ. Newark is the third oldest city in America and was founded by
Christians in the 1660’s. The original area was called the Village of New
Ark and it comprised present day Newark as well as the towns and suburbs of
Montclair, Bloomfield, Belleville and others. The Fivefold Ministers who
attended agreed that this was the Lord’s Will and have committed to the task
of bringing the Leaders of the area together in Unity for the building up of
the City Church.
The work of “spiritual mapping” of the area was begun and the historical
and spiritual roots were outlined. Spiritual mapping is a present day tool
that many have used to see their city or region as it is in “the spirit” and
not just as it is in the “natural”.
The next Gatekeepers Gathering will be held on Thursday, September 14th
at The House of Mercy Mission in Newark. Pastor Sam Giresi has graciously
offered one of the rooms there to be a “spiritual war room”. The Gathering
will begin at 9:45am with some light refreshments and will conclude at
approximately noon.
Fivefold Ministers from across the region are being invited to a Gourmet
Luncheon to be held on September 30th, the Feast of Rosh Hashanah. The theme
is “Blowing the Trumpet of Unity”. The Guest Speaker will be Dr. Wade E.
Taylor the Founder and President Emeritus of Pinecrest Bible Training
Center. Dr. Taylor has a very specific word for Leaders in the “end times”.
I am looking forward to seeing the work of the Lord established in Newark
and I am fully committed to work with other Leaders in the Metro Area for
Unity also.
In His Service, Frank P. Duprée, Director

*HOW IS PRAYER CHANGING AMERICA?
>From: USPrayerTrack@cs.com
>By: Eddie Smith
Throughout history the wholehearted prayer of God’s people has
brought not only the intervention of God into the affairs of men,
but has actually changed the course of nations!
However, since the industrial revolution, American culture has
been one of the few non-praying cultures on Earth. Until recently
prayer has been our last resort, rather than our first response! But
that is changing. Americans are once again becoming people of prayer.
More and more?

*CONVERSATION CONTINUES ON BLACKABY’S COMMENT
>rom: Jsnarnia@aol.com
Blackaby's comment-“I talked with the CEOs of a major mission sending
agency, and the last word I had is that, as of this moment, every solitary
unreached people group has some group that had made a commitment to take the
gospel to them.”
James C. Stephens- As the Executive Director of a mission research and
training group that works to reach the Buddhist world (Sonrise Center for
Buddhist Studies , I would question the wisdom
of that “major mission sending agency.” It is not the case. Although many
groups have been engaged in some respect, they are far, far from being
reached. As a convert out of Buddhism and the founder of a new work, I was
shocked when I approached Ralph Winter about the list of unreached Buddhist
peoples only to find it was but an estimate. There was no list. I have
worked on this list over the last twelve years, and although we have seen an
increase in interest, I will concur with you on this. The church is asleep
in the harvest, and we still only have one supporting church after twelve
years, a pentacostal church. Even after attending a well-known evangelical
church in the midst of a Thai Buddhist community for over ten years, we have
never been supported by them, except for three gifts. We see missions as
exclusively overseas, and are blind to our responsibility next door except
for a token program or two. Yes judgment is coming, but the work is far
from being done. Our own nation is a mission field itself and needs to be
re-engaged. Much of the Church is still living in the 50’s and needs to see
the new fields white for the harvest in America, too. For rethinking this
mission, I’d wholeheartedly recommend Newbigin’s “The Gospel in a Pluralist
Society”; Charles Van Engen’s “God’s Missionary People: Rethinking the
purpose of the Local Church”; For an overall view of the change in mission
”Transforming Mission: Paradigm Shifts in Theology of Mission” by the late
David J. Bosch and also the practical and insightful piece by Darrell
Gruder’s “Missional Church:A Vision for the Sending of the Church in North
America” published by Wm. B. Eerdmans in 1998.
Dr. Blackaby-we are out there, don’t give up hope. We are experiencing
God in our battle to “love the church” as Christ loved us even when we were
yet sinners. Entering into Christ’s sufferings, embracing Him, and picking
up our cross.Your work has inspired many who have sat on the sidelines,
knowing something was lacking, but couldn’t put their fingers on the
problem.
In Christ’s refuge and strength, James C. Stephens

*WAITING ON VERSUS WORKING FOR
From: PastorsInPrayer@aol.com
Francis Schaeffer once wrote, “Let us not think that waiting on the Lord
will
mean getting less done. Who can do the most, you or the God of heaven and
earth? Is not the central problem of our generation that the world looks
upon the church and sees it trying to do the Lord’s work in the flesh?”

*FLORIDA PRAYER NETWORK: STATEWIDE CONNECTIONS
>From: “Pam Olsen”

Purpose Of FPN: Florida Prayer Network seeks to unite individuals, churches,
and ministries to form a prayer network to seek God for the healing of our
nation; to pray for revival: and to pray for the strengthening of families
throughout Florida and our country. Through a united effort of prayer, our
state and nation can be changed! “The effectual fervent prayer of a
righteous man avails much.” James 5:16.

National Pastors’ Prayer Initiative: This is a national initiative to raise
up 100,000 pastors across the nation that will make prayer the first
priority of their lives and working towards making their churches houses of
prayer. National ministries are linking arms to be used of God to serve the
church by calling, encouraging, and equipping pastors to make a lifestyle of
prayer the number one priority of their lives and ministries. Please begin
to intercede for this initiative. We will give you more details next month.
Imagine what will happen if 100,000 pastors make prayer a real priority and
call their churches to be Houses of Prayer!

*Tallahassee’s Pastors’ Prayer Summit: Oct. 30 - Nov. 2, 2000: Please pray
for this important prayer summit that will effect the capitol city. The
senior pastors of Leon county and several surrounding counties will gather
together for four days of prayer to see unity in the body of Christ and to
see their cities transformed. For more information and to register for this
prayer gathering please visit: http://www.floridaprayer.org/prayersummit

that God would unite the ALL the pastors in Miami to see their city
transformed for Jesus Christ!.

We must pray and fast for our nation,
especially right before the presidential election!

See You At The Pole September 20, 2000: students pray around the flagpole at
their school. . Keep this date in prayer that
students will take a stand for Christ and pray for a revival on their
campus.

”Pray at the Polls 2000.” November 7, 2000: The vision is simple: “That all
believers in the Lord Jesus would take a minute to pray at the polling
booths this November. One vote may seem to mean so little, but one prayer
means God’s kingdom and purpose will come!!! It means everything. The vision
is that the church will saturate the polling booths with prayer on November
7th. If Christian organizations across the nation could catch the vision,
then the idea of “Pray at the Polls 2000” would spread and every polling
site could be covered with humble prayer. This is not about politics. the
desire of our hearts is to see the tide turned in America, and for God to
have mercy on us. We are convinced that sweeping national repentance and
prayer at the grassroots is the answer. For more information you can e-mail
Tracy Stillman by visiting the website at:

*Adopt-a-School: The organizers of the CALL DC2000 are asking that each
local church adopt a nearby public school to pray and cover the students on
campus. Out of the 56,000 public and private schools, only 29,000 are
adopted for Christ. God is indeed moving on school campuses as reported in
Time Magazine (June 5, 2000 pg. 61) of the revival that sprung up in Pearl
River Central High School in Carriere, MS. National legislation allows for
released time for religious instruction, and we are urging churches across
the nation to become actively involved in the spiritual welfare of students
on local campuses. To Adopt a school at your local church, please see the

*JACKSONVILLE, FL: TRANSFORMATION SWEEPS PRIME TIME
>From: Dennisonjl@cs.com

On Saturday, August 26, from 7 pm - 8 pm the Transformations video aired on
CBS Channel 4.

The hour-long program began with an introduction from African-American
pastor
Bruce Allen stating, “You are about to see what happens when God visits a
city, when the people of God walk together in unity. Sit back and watch the
awesome power of God.”

At the conclusion of the fifty-eight minute video produced by George Otis
and
the Seattle based organization, The Sentinel Group, Ted Corley, leader of
Mission First Coast (Jacksonville’s City Reaching Initiative) spoke,
”Transfor
mation-an amazing word, an amazing idea, and as you’ve just seen an amazing
reality.”

The following statement came directly from a representative from a PR firm
that has been helping the Church prepare for this program.

”I just got a call from Channel 4. I had asked them to notify me when the
numbers came in from Saturday nights Transformation video. Well, . . .
TRANSFORMATION SWEPT THE TIME PERIOD FROM 7PM-8PM!

shows (including the Florida State University vs Brigham Young University
football game), the Channel 25
Hurricane Watch Special and the rest of the cable network!!! We too a 7.7
rating which means that out of every 100 households, 7.7 households watched
the Transformations video or a 15% share of the entire television watching
audience!! Their 11pm Saturday Night News, which is the highest ranking news

program of the weekend only took a 7.1 share!! With that kind of ranking, if

I were to try to buy commercial time, well . . . WE COULDN’T AFFORD IT!!”

Immediately following the showing (I was in Jacksonville 24 hours later)
government officials, political figures, lawn enforcement leaders, and lots
of others have said to several leaders of Mission First Coast, “You know
that
Transformation thing that was on TV the other night, I want to see that. Can

you get me a copy of the video??” Over and over and over again others have
heard the roar of interest that has come from this unprecedented showing in
the US and they want to know more. Praise God!

The total project cost $30,000 that was donated by a local Christian
businessman. $20,000 met the cost for the television showing and the
remainder went toward purchasing a personal copy of the video for every
single Church in Jacksonville!

God is on the move in the cities of the world and he is opening
unprecedented
doors of opportunity to the Church if we are wise enough to see them and
courageous enough to walk through them.

Please pass this good news along to others in your network!

*CITYWIDE PRAYER LEADERS CONSULTATION REPORT
>From: “Prayer Transformation Ministries”

Prayer leaders from across the country gathered in Minneapolis, on August
27-30 to pray, network, and talk about the prayer movement in their cities.
Sponsored by Prayer Transformation Ministries, the Citywide Prayer Leaders
Consultation brought together leaders of citywide prayer ministries in a
strategic meeting to evaluate the prayer movement, and find common threads
of what God is doing in prayer.

Nineteen leaders from Miami to Tacoma, from New York to San Antonia and St.
Louis gathered at the Nehemiah Center in downtown Minneapolis for the first
of what is planned to be an ongoing city prayer leaders network.

Presentations were made concerning pastors involvement in prayer, children’s
prayer, and the place of the marketplace in the prayer movement.

Five key trends were identified. They were as follows:
1) The need for a foundation of informed, sustained, united and
multifaceted intercession
2) The important growing communications networks
3) The connection between prayer and the marketplace
4) The growth of pastoral ownership in the prayer movement
5) The growing significance of children and youth in the prayer movement

There was, in addition, a long list of “common threads” that were identified
by those attending. These common threads included such things as: family
prayer, the “Lord’s Watch,” mentoring, building relationships, the need for
more prayer leaders, the fact that pastors are key, gathering around common
vision and passion, relationship between pastors and intercessors, and the
need for tenacity for the long haul.

Plans are under way to hold a 2001 Consultation in Dallas, August 26-28,
2001.

*RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA: NETWORKING THE KINGDOM
>From: “Norm ********”

God is greatly at work in our region! In all my years of ministry, I have
never experienced Him at work as dynamically and dramatically as now. I
again would like to recount and elaborate as to how He is moving. I hope I
can paint the picture in sufficient words to clearly give Him glory and
honor.

Prayer---
People everywhere are praying to gain a greater connection to the Lord.
They want His holiness, His face- not just His hand. The sheer bankruptcy
of many church-goers is now apparent. Religion and traditions are not
enough, His presence is.
There has been a barrage of phone calls by pastors who want to organize
joint prayer times. They want to know how to best get the word out, that
spending time with God and building relationship with Him and with one
another is crucial.
Several pastors and Christian leaders are genuinely repenting of leading
people into programs instead of His presence. There are men and women who
cannot live another day with the weight of their schedules. They are crying
out for refreshment from the Lord. We have started to have half days of
prayer with leaders to get de-slimed, an acronym for Detection and
Elimination of Satans Lies, Imitations, Malice, Evil, and Destruction.
Biblically, this process includes, recognition of things not pleasing to
God, repentance, renunciation of those things in our lives that deter from
His Lordship, restoration of a biblical value system, renewal through
accountability, and a pursuit of a holy revolution to hunger after Him
alone.
The movement of God is cleansing hearts, heads, and homes. Just last
week we gathered several leaders of prayer together and we were asking God
to make it apparent to us as to how to move forward in this prayer process.
It became clear that we are to multiply our efforts and not just do
addition. We clearly were lead to work predominately with leadership.
During the time, a pastor called and explained his current desperation to my
Assistant. He would not take no for an answer, and came immediately over
from over 25 miles away to obtain prayer, counsel, and advice from the
prayer leaders assembled in the office that day. This served as
confirmation to us of what we sensed the Lord was directing about working
with leaders!
We have determined to listen to Him alone! More prayer and longing for
His solution to our regions slime is the edge we need in discovering how to
minister in the long-term.

Care---For I was hungry and you gave me no food)
In this area, we have been overwhelmed with the needs in our immediate
region. According to the San Bernardino County Community Services office,
over 235,000 families are food - insecure on a weekly basis. This means
that on day four, five, or six of any given week, a familys financial
ability to provide adequate food for their household has run out
We have just discovered another interesting fact in an article jointly
produced by Hewitt Packard and Second Harvest Food Bank, that there is over
100 billion pounds of food thrown away in America every year. The problem
is not with supply, but distribution!
Our goal is to say yes to every corporation who wants to give food away
to Somebody Cares Southland. We have continued to distribute food, passing
out 250,000 pounds of food this last August to over 43 groups that have
signed up with us. This ultimately reaches well over 50,000 people a month.
Through this distribution of food, we have begun to clearly identify those
in need.
A Compassion Network of warehouses across the Southland is forming, to
ascertain how we can work better together rather than apart. Other partners
like Childrens Hunger Fund, Feed the Children, World Blessing Foundation,
Convoy of Hope, and a myriad of other local churches and ministries, are
working together to fight the blight of hunger, poverty, and hopelessness of
a society gazing inwardly, instead of growing in service and love to those
who are needy and less fortunate.
Our partnership with Operation Blessing, a nationally recognized
ministry flowing out from the Christian Broadcasting Network, is enabling us
to even go to the next level of assistance to those who are the most
vulnerable- the children.
This last month we were able to distribute thousands of dollars
allocated by Operation Blessing through out network to some of those
children impacted by poverty. Back-to-school supplies like backpacks,
clothes, shoes, paper, pens, pencils, rulers, erasers and glue sticks, have
been distributed to hundreds of children in several locations in the
Southland.
Through the network of churches, organizations, and ministries, we are
seeing blocks of homes being adopted that are lying in poverty stricken
areas of the Inland Empire and High Desert area. The Adopt-A-Block program
is making a difference in peoples lives. People are finding Christ, getting
assistance, and receiving advocacy to their local city governments. This
results in funding, aid, and helpful programs which are creatively turning
lives of hopelessness around to seeing a future ahead.

Share---
In this area of ministry, we only are finding fields of people white
unto harvest, ripe for receiving Christ. In one outreach last month, twenty
people came to Christ in four hours at a Care Day event done in Apple
Valley. Additionally, 84 of those people came to a local congregation after
that event the next Sunday. The city government is eager to assist us in
this particular neighborhood in as many ways as are possible; even the
police do not go into this crime-infested area after dark.
Three weekends in September, we are assisting groups all over the Inland
Empire with pallets of food to enable them to reach out to those who are
less fortunate. In each outreach, Christ is preached, which is one of the
reasons we agree to assist them with a food giveaway.
In each Back-to-School event, a relationship with Christ is explained to
the children as well as their parents. We are awaiting the evaluations and
reports of what successfully transpired.

Our Purpose: SCS’s role in the Body of Christ is to build partnerships.
We will do this by motivating, developing and equipping people to pray for
God’s will to be done here on earth as it is in heaven; ministering to the
less fortunate; and evangelizing until all have heard a culturally relevant
presentation of the Gospel.
Our Vision: SCS’s is a mobile and visible Christian community that
serves Christ by: obeying the Great Commandment, completing the Great
Commission and enabling transformation of individuals, organizations, and
cities.
SCS seeks to fulfill this vision through P.C.S.
1. Praying for everyone. 1 Tim. 2:1, 2-8
2. Caring for the less fortunate in our communities. Ex. 22:21-27, Lev.
25: 35-37, Prov. 28:27
3. Sharing the Gospel to everyone within our reach. Prov. 11:30, Acts 1:8

Pressing on, Norm ********, Servant Director
Somebody Cares Southland
