*MISSION HOUSTON: PPGs + HISPANIC + 40 “KNOX-ERS”

>From: “Jim Herrington” <jhmh@flash.net>

Remembering that transformation is a long term process that God Himself must bring, we rejoice in some of the short term progress that He gives us to encourage us along the way.  This has been an incredible couple of weeks.

Clear Lake City (southeast Houston):  Sixteen pastors representing 13 congregations in Clear Lake City came together for a two day retreat on May 9/10.  Clear Lake City is an area where there are already a lot of good things happening.  At this retreat these pastors prayed and worshiped together.  The Lord used the time to help them identify some key priorities that will help them move to the next level.  A spiritual mapping project is underway and a leadership team to guide the discernment of God’s plan for transformation is emerging.  And, it seems that the pastors left with a renewed commitment to staying the course.  Pray for persevering leadership and for significant progress in the mapping of Clear Lake City.

In the Hispanic community,  God answered a long standing prayer to bring this community together to pray.  On Monday, May 15, sixty-nine pastors came together for breakfast, worship, and a deeply meaningful time of prayer.  Pastors from nearly every Latin American country and from a variety of denominational and non-denominational churches joined together to pray and have agreed to do so every month from now on.

At the conclusion of the meeting, a seasoned Senior Pastor came to me and said some words that reflect both wisdom and a call to pray.  He said,  “We need to pray that God will revive the pastors.  Most of these men and women have heavy burdens they carry, deep scars from their families of origin, and much turmoil in their congregations today.  These are things that work against “dwelling together in unity.”  (Psalms 133)  We need to pray that God will set them free.  I went away thinking, “This is not just true for these Hispanic pastors.  It’s true of many pastors in the city regardless of the ethnic background.”  Pray for God to continue drawing these pastors together and to add to their number.  Ask him to bring encouragement and healing to lives of pastors everywhere.

Southwest Houston:  On Tuesday, May 16, Houston Baptist University hosted the pastors and intercessors from Southwest Houston.  Approximately 40 John/Jane Knoxers gathered.  A John/Jane Knoxer is one with enough passion for city transformation that he/she is willing to take leadership.  Pastor Charles Wisdom shared the Katy Church story and we heard a testimony from the Church in Richmond.  One of the pastors from Richmond told of recently being in a meeting with the Assistant High School Principal.  The pastors in Richmond have specifically been praying for the schools.  The Assistant Principle reported that normally by this time of the year, discipline problems are increasing significantly and potential gang trouble is on the horizon.  He said, “This year discipline problems are at a minimum and we are expecting no end of the year outburst from any gang.”  He then credited the pastors’ praying together for the change in the school climate.  Pray that more and more pastors and intercessors will capture the vision of praying for specific needs in their community.

Citywide Prayer Gathering - intercessors are gathering from across the city on Thursday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Korean Christian Church of Houston located at 10410 Clay Road.  This is off the west Sam Houston Toll Road.  For more information call 713-464-5141.  Several from the Mission Houston team will be there, but I will not.  I’ll be on my way to Shelby Farms, Tennessee to gather with 100,000 generation xers (yes I realize that I don’t fit the age category) to pray for revival in our country.  I’m taking 13 generation xers from the church I pastor (Harbor Church).  We will join you in unified praying as we travel.

Money news:  Good news/bad news on the financial front.  Today, an individual pledged to be the third of four matching grant donors.  You’ll remember that we have a $25,000 matching grant pledge that is contingent on getting four others to match the gift.  Two matches have already been made, and today, a third one was pledged.  We rejoice in God’s provision.  The financial needs continue to outpace the provision.  Mission Houston had four new staff members join the team in September of 1999 and giving is still catching up with the faith walk of these individuals.  Despite that, they are working with faithfulness and intensity in their assigned areas of the city.  So continue to pray that God will release all the resources needed.

Thank you for your encouragement and commitment to pray.  Streams of renewal

are gathering momentum, and it is the sound of a mighty rushing river you

will one day (soon) hear.  Blessings, JTH

*WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE INTERCESSOR?

From:      Ralph W Thompson <ralphy4@juno.com>

One aspect of an intercessors role in city reaching is that of a forerunner. Like John, making level paths for the Lord’s plans and purposes through intercession for spiritual leaders of a city.  Why?  for His name’s sake....to make His name famous in our cities.  A desire of God’s heart.  When a real forerunner begins to level a path it is for the real thing to come as can be seen in Mt. 3: 3,15 Moffatt.  “In those days” when John was making the way for Jesus to begin his purpose, they found themselves needing to communicate with one another about the situation at hand (baptism) because neither one had ever come this way before and did not know the procedure or protocol.  John finally submits to the superior authority when Jesus said “come now, this is how we should fulfill all our duty to God”, therefore, city reaching began with a chosen leadership-partnership submitted to God’s order.  Repentance is not far behind.  Although the intercessor is not a part of church government (apostle, prophet pastor-teacher, evangelist) their function  of support, protection, insight, etc. is crucial to complete & compliment all stages of gathering together the church in the city.  I suspect the enemy, right now, has a delaying tactic that he is able to enforce in thwarting the coming together of pastors.  The intercessor in relationship with the leaders make a weapon of God to combat this evil force and release pastors to have the mind of Christ in this matter.

An intercessor can have a vision for the city but a vision without commission by proper authorities has no power.  Listen to these strong words spoken by a pastor, “woe to those who make  plans without an intercessor.” I wholeheartedly say amen, having experienced church and city plans with and without an intercessor.  The woe is really woe but not unredeemable.  I believe when today’s church history is written it will say “in those days” a forerunner came on the scene.  Our God is the same God as yesterday.

*CITY REACHERS + CITY RESEARCHERS

>From: “John Quam” <jquam@prodigy.net>

Prayer Transformation Ministries

One of the most strategic functions in city reaching/transformation is

the gathering, evaluating and communication of critical information.  This process is usually divided into two parts; information on the harvest force, (local churches, ministries, etc.) and information on the harvest field, (demographics, socio-economics, etc.).   Several kinds of software are now being employed in this field and much has been discovered on where to find information and how to process it.  In addition we are learning how to connect this information to the local church and the church in the city.

As a result of the growth in this area, we are seeking to bring together those who are involved in this kind of research and information management for a 2 day consultation.  While the focus will be on practitioners, we also invite city leaders who might want to know how all this works together even though they don’t have someone filling this role at this time.  We will hold the consultation in San Jose, July 10-11.  Our meetings will take place in a local church where Christian Resource Network has their offices.  A list of local hotels is available.  If you are interested in this consultation or know someone who should get an invitation, please contact us at Prayer Transformation Ministries, 612-278-1717 or send an email to John Quam at JQuam@prodigy.net <mailto:JQuam@prodigy.net> .  There is no registration fee but each person will be responsible for their own travel and expenses.

>From: twchurch@flash.net (The Woodfield Church)

New Hope Community Church joined forces with two other evangelical churches in its community to distribute the Book of Hope,  a paperback booklet featuring selected passages from the New Testament, to 15,000 homes before Easter.

Residents also received an invitation to attend church on Easter Sunday. Before distributing the pocket books, about 175 people met for a rally for worship, prayer and encouragement, said Joe LaCognata, New Hope’s senior pastor. The other churches  involved were Deer Grove Covenant, affiliated with the Evangelical Covenant Church, and Grace Community Church, part of the Evangelical Free Church.

LaCognata and the other two pastors have been meeting together for

prayer and fellowship for two years. “I believe the  Book of Hope  is the

first of many joint efforts. We have discussed coming together to minister

to children, distribute the Jesus video and reach the Hispanic population

of Palatine.”    Illinois Baptist Newspaper

*FLORIDA PRAYER NETWORK: NDP REPORT + CONNECTIONS

>From: “Pam Olsen” <flprayer@gte.net>

What a glorious time we time we had on the National Day of Prayer! I hope you were able to attend a prayer rally in your area. We had hundreds of people gather at the State Capitol to pray for our state and nation to return to God. Florida Supreme Court Justice Peggy Quince opened the prayer rally with a powerful prayer. Governor Jeb Bush came and shared his heart on the importance of prayer, Mayor Scott Maddox proclaimed May 4th as a day of prayer for the city of Tallahassee (Gov. Bush and the cabinet members also wrote proclamations and a resolution proclaiming a day of prayer for the state). Katherine Harris, Sec. of State, came and prayed. Lt. Gov. Frank Brogan was our keynote speaker. He shared a moving message on how prayer and the Lord has helped him through the last two years (he lost his wife, mother, and father-in-law in the last two years). The most moving time of the rally came when Representative Bob Starks shared his personal testimony.  He gave an incredibly moving Gospel message. The Holy Spirit was so present during his “sermon”. All the crowd praised the Lord. I know the heart of God was touched as pastors and leaders prayed from their hearts for repentance and revival in our state and nation.(The entire rally can be heard on our website www.floridaprayer.org <http://www.floridaprayer.org>  and the video is available for a $10 donation). The next day the Tallahassee Democrat had three large full color photos on the front page (one said “Bob Starks shares his love for Christ at the National Day of Prayer”). The article was two pages called “Applying the Power of Prayer”. I know revival is on the way if we keep pressing in. Be persistent in your daily prayers. NOW is the time to call people to prayer. People throughout the state are forming prayer groups in their neighborhoods, churches are having daily prayer meetings, pastors are calling their churches to be houses of prayer and pastors are praying together from different denominations. I hope you will continue to ask the Lord what He wants YOU to do in YOUR city. Now is the time to intercede for our nation more than ever. I hope you will take the time to read  the prayer requests. Some are the same, some are new. Please pray over the areas.  Please let us know if you have any prayer needs or prayer events we can post. We only send out an alert once a month unless there is an urgent need that effects the state or nation.  May God bless you and encourage you as you pray!

*MISSION HOUSTON SOUTHWEST REGION

>From: “Jim Herrington” <jhmh@flash.net>

Regional City-Reaching Report

·       On May 16th, forty-five pastors and leaders from the Southwest Houston area came together at Houston Baptist University for a time of review and vision casting around the topic of citywide transformation. A broad representation of leaders from the region attended and interacted around topics such as urgency, unity and the “how-to’s” of community transformation.  Testimonies were reported from area pastors regarding the work that God has begun in their regions. Dr. Charles Wisdom of the Katy Church shared stories and encouragement from an 8-year process of pastors coming together in their community. The Katy Church is the collective term being used to describe this gathering, which is developing a shared vision bringing change and evidences of a Psalm 133 blessing in the Katy community (“How good it is when brothers live together in unity, for there God bestows His blessing”).

The Richmond and Rosenberg area was represented by eight pastors who have been experiencing the benefits of united prayer, along with partnering in ministry.  Pastor Deborah Prihoda told of a local High School Assistant Principal who reported that this year, discipline problems and gang trouble are significantly reduced.  The school official attributes this decrease to the ongoing united prayer for change in the school climate.

As a result of the meeting, two new pastors’ prayer groups will be formed this summer. Fifteen pastors indicated a desire to plan community transformation workshops to be held in the fall. Several pastors and intercessors will be working together to develop strategies to pray for churches and pastors in the Southwest Region of Houston.

As a follow-up to our meeting, a Spiritual Mapping prayer luncheon will be held on June 20. Dr. Walter Lumpkin, of HBU will be presenting research and mapping summaries of Southwest Houston Communities. The meeting will take place from 11:30-1:30 on the HBU Campus (room location to be announced).  If you are interested and have not yet replied, please indicate your interest by e-mail (brian@missionhouston.org, or phone (713) 410-1970.

For those of you who were unable to attend this meeting and would like to get involved in the “next steps” of Southwest Houston city-reaching, please contact Brian Gowan in the Southwest office by e-mail or phone.

Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt:

·       The Transformation of the Greater Houston area through the gospel of Jesus Christ is urgently needed.  With approximately 2 million people who need to be reached with the gospel, the Church must be mobilized and united.  Much of the Church is struggling to figure out how to reach people in our post-modern culture; many pastors feel overwhelmed, discouraged and in many cases beaten down. Pastors throughout the area are becoming increasingly convinced that this is an appointed time for Houston to come together and experience the Kingdom of God in a new and dynamic way.

May we take these words of Jesus to heart as He exhorts us in this hour:

“I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.” (Matthew 18:2 -4).

Prayer:

“Lord Jesus, we need to see You more clearly and be like You more fully. By Your grace and transforming power, change our hearts, our homes, and Your Church in renewing ways. Lord, we confess that at times it is hard to humble ourselves and become ‘childlike’ in our faith. We desperately need your healing love to transform us and our broken communities. Unite and ignite Your church to do Your holy will. In Your Holy Name we pray. Amen.”

*PRAY SACRAMENTO: REPORTS & UPDATES

>From: info@praysacramento.com (Pray Sacramento)

Christian Prayer Resources mobilizes and networks prayer activity trans-denominationally for revival in the Church and spiritual awakening to the community and throughout the land. God wants His Kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.  God wants to see His Church united, informed and focused in prayer for their communities by the power of His Holy Spirit.  It is our hope that this ministry will bring His Church together in unity, fervency, strategically and powerfully to make a difference for God’s glory and man’s good!

CPR Mission:  Mobilizes and Networks the Body of Christ for continuous, unified, fervent and strategic prayer by the power of His Holy Spirit.

CPR Prayer Mandate ~~ “Seek the peace of the city where I have caused

you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in it’s

peace you will have peace ... For I know the thoughts that I think toward

you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future

and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will

listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with

all your heart.”  Jeremiah 29:7,11-13

In January the PraySacramento Christian Community Calendar was fully launched.  This communication tool is for information and intercession.  It is emailed weekly to nearly 500 individuals who are intercessors, pastors and leaders in the greater Sacramento area.  God is using it to not only inform the Church in the area, but also to inspire other communities with similar Christian community communication tools.  Please pray for God’s protection, direction and favor upon it (PraySacramento),  as it seeks to inform and mobilize prayer. If you’d like to receive a copy of it just email at: Info@PraySacramento.com.

The National Day of Prayer was inspiring.  At the breakfast, local District Attorney Jan Scully directed the morning, while Mindi Russell, Sacramento Law Enforcement gave an inspiring talk (sees a greater speaker for your church, 916-564-3600 or email: CHAPSFM@aol.com).  During the Youth Rally about 80 students prayed at the State Capitol interceding for the youth of our state and country.  The evening concluded with a City-Worshipand intercession event at a local church.  Several hundred prayer warriors and 25-30 pastors came together to worship the Lord and interceded for many areas of need throughout our land.  As Northern California National Day of Prayer coordinator, I heard of many of God’s people praying for repentance and revival in our land.

The North State Pastors Prayer Summit, were I participated on a facilitator team, had pastors attending from most of the counties in the North State.  With Intercessors praying for the pastors during the same time, God moved in the lives of the pastors and caused them to see that God was not only calling them to pastor their congregation but with their congregation to also pastor their community.

There are prayer networks starting and growing all over the state of California and CPR is in the middle of it all by way of encouraging any and all to start and grow.  God is reviving His Church, unifying it in fervent informed and focused prayer. Pastors and intercessors are learning to trust each other in new ways.  Please continue to pray for His Kingdom to come, His will to be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Please pray for our Ministry Support ($2,000 still needed per month)

*CHARLESTON, WV: 100% SATURATION

>From: “Pastor Ron Thaxton” <wvcj2k@churchinthecity.com>

Charleston, West Virginia Metro Area Nears 100% Saturation with the Gospel during Book of Hope Campaign Easter Blitz!!!

What had happened to make this possible? This had not been in our plans for this year?! We had heard of the Book of Hope Campaign at the Mission America National Committee meeting in Chicago in 1999. But as the target was to be 50 of the largest cities in the U.S. I immediately dismissed it from my mind.

Someone once said that another name for God in addition to Jehovah-Jireh, Jehovah-Nissi, etc. should be Jehovah-“Sneaky” and that is just what He did to usHe sneaked up on us! Our phone rang early in February and on the other end was my National Coordinator for Mission America, Jarvis Ward, with the question, “Do you want to do the Book of Hope in Charleston?” I was somewhat taken aback, “Do I want to?” was my immediate thought. Initially all that was required was to arrange a place for an informational breakfast to be hosted by the Book of Hope folks, get the message out and see what happened.

Almost 30 representatives from various churches and ministries gathered at Wellingtons of Scarlet Oaks on February 29 to receive the presentation.  There was something about this group that held a great portent for what was about to happen. Many had been praying together for more than ten years for a breakthrough in our area and especially since the Billy Graham Associate Crusade in 1994 they had insisted on nothing but the development of loving trusting relationships and corporate prayer. This group provided the nucleus for the chain reaction that was about to happen!

The response to the presentation was enthusiastic (en theos - in God) and we decided to go forward with the endeavor. We asked, “What would be a good target for us to aim toward?” The reply was that 60% saturation would be good and that 75% would be optimal. After the breakfast we were at about 37% and 60% seemed to be a long way away. We needed warehouse and office space it was miraculously provided! We needed skillful and responsible Zip Code Coordinators and they were appointed. The commitment from local churches, ministries and ministerial and denominational associations began to climb.  God put it in our hearts to pray for 100% saturation. There are 105,000 households in the Charleston Metro area! Were we being foolhardy? The response continued to grow 60% and then 75%! Was it going to happen? We initially received 75,000 copies of the booklets this was not going to be enough! Ninety percent and rising, “We will just ship you a total of 150,000 Books of Hope was the response from the National Headquarters.”

We started receiving responses from other communities in West Virginia:

Princeton, Beckley, Oak Hill, Summersville and Craigsville, Ripley, Gassaway and Sutton, Huntington, Ona, and Kenova. And then Ashland, Kentucky as well as South Point and Ironton, Ohio were added. It was becoming a very real possibility that all 105,000 households of the Charleston Metro area were going to be impacted with a loving, prayerful and comprehendible presentation of the Gospel Message.

Now that we are on the other side of the majority of the Book of Hope Campaign a few overlooked areas are still being attended to the objective reality is that we now live in a community that has been totally saturated with the Good News! All the way from Montgomery to Hurricane. We have only 1,400 copies of the Book of Hope left in our inventory as of this date! You can ask almost anyone that you encounter, “Did you get your Book of Hope?” Invariably they have, maybe they got two, and this is a wonderful opportunity to pursue a conversation regarding their own response to the Message.

And what is so amazing about all of this is that Charleston out of the 33 participating cities in the U.S.is the only one that we know of that reached the maximum potential! What has made this possible? There was no intricate strategy here. No well thought out plan it was really very simple. A group of men and women spiritual leaders from throughout our community reconciled denominationally and racially, who would not give up on fervent united prayer until they saw something like this happen here. And who are now reaching forward and saying, “Lord, we want more. We want your full blessing for our city. We will give You no rest until You make us into a Transformed Community a praise to You in the earth!” Transform not Charleston only, but all of West Virginia and Appalachia.

And this has not been all:

In February more than 100 pastors, leaders and intercessors gathered in Flatwoods for a West Virginia Prayer Summit. The purpose was to build upon the 1999 Summit with 37 in attendance where the vision to see Prayer Centers established in every county in our state. God endorsed this gathering with an awesome awareness of His manifest Presence throughout the gathering. You can go to www.churchinthecity.com <http://www.churchinthecity.com>  to read a written account of the 2000 Spring Summit.

The 3rd Annual Governors Prayer Breakfast on May 3 at the Charleston House Holiday Inn. Almost 25 leaders of business, government, arts, education, church, law enforcement, etc.including Governor Underwood himself offered prayers of repentance and petition in the area in which they had influence and authority. Many remarked that this was the most powerful Governors Prayer Breakfast yet.  There were approximately 230 in attendance.

And still we have:

The Church’s Birthday Celebration on Pentecost Sunday, June 11, 6:00 p.m. at the Capital Plaza Theater. We are gathering together in one place, as one people, for one purpose: That He, Jesus, May Be Made Known!

Jesus Day 2000 in Charleston on June 17 is going to be an awesome celebration of Gods Kingdom being formed in Charleston and its surrounding regions. We will PrayerWalk from the North, East, West and South converging on Slack Plaza in Downtown Charleston for the first Citywide Jesus Celebration in our city!

We just cant seem to quit - we are constrained by His love and we appreciate

you for the continued evidence of His love toward us.   Pastors Ron & Nancy

Thaxton

*WASHINGTON, DC: PRAYERS UP; CRIME DROPS

>From: USAPRAY@aol.com

In a dramatic letter yesterday to The Washington Post, Dan Wedderburn of the DC Human Rights Commission touted the District of Columbia’s 45% drop in crime since 1993.  The District has outstripped other major cities, including New York City and all DC metropolitan surrounding areas, in a record plunge of crime rates.  Washington DC was known in the early 1990s as the “murder capital of the nation.”  In 1993, 454 persons were killed.  In 1999, 232 homicides were committed.  Rape has fallen 40%, aggravated assault and battery have fallen 60%, and burglaries declined almost 70%.  Wedderburn credits a good economy, low unemployment, fewer persons in the younger-age groups that account for a disproportionate share of crime, record high incarcerations and better policing policies.  Incredibly, the District’s police force was cut by over 20% in the same period.

Intercessors for America began a monthly “Washington Watch” prayer effort in late 1992.  This developed into our weekly Prayer Focus on Washington, DC which is part of this “On Watch In Washington.”  A group of leaders also initiated a nationwide 24-hour US/DC Prayer Watch in late 1997.  A new 24-hour Prayer and Worship watch is also being maintained by local churches in the Metro, DC area.  While we realize that many more Christians than ever before are praying for our nation’s capital, let us humbly offer thanksgiving for the contribution which IFA “partners in prayer” (many of you!) have made over these years.  Let us pray that the crescendo of prayer in our nation’s capital increases even more!
