Next Wednesday (March 10) will be a significant evening of outreach for the Christian Embassy here in Washington, D.C. Fifteen Christian generals and admirals from the Pentagon have joined with us to co-host a dinner for the diplomats who represent their country's armed forces here in America. The response to the invitations has been encouraging - 69 couples from 52 countries are planning to attend! This will be a great opportunity to "make disciples of all the nations." However, it is a spiritual battle as well. We ask you to pray with us: -That God would protect the commitments people have made to attend. -For our speaker, Rear Admiral John Hutson, that his talk would be an engaging message with a clear testimony to his faith in Christ -That our emcee, Major General Joe Cosumano, would make a warm connection with the guests, and would clearly lead them through various responses at the end of the dinner. -That nothing would hinder the Army Chorus from performing as part of the program. -That God would powerfully use the evangelistic book, "A Man without Equal." A copy will be given to each couple. -That many attaches and spouses would become involved in follow-up activities that would nurture them in their spiritual growth. Thanks for your prayers this week! We'll send out a report after the dinner is over. Psalm 2:8 "Ask of Me, and I will make the nations your inheritance." This is an outreach dinner and we would love for the prayer network to be praying for this dinner. I will update with answers after the dinner. I would ask that everyone pray and not PUBLICIZE this event as we are working with individuals who are constantly in the press and we through we appreciate your prayers, please honor their privacy. Please pray that all the nations represented at this dinner would be touched with the love of Christ. The Barna study indicates that almost one-third of the nation's adults (31%) can be deemed "unchurched" - a proportion that represents 60 to 65 million unchurched adults. For this survey a person was classified as "unchurched" if he or she had not attended a Christian church service during the past six months, other than a special event such as a wedding or funeral or holiday service. The 31% figure represents a small but significant increase from the 27% measured just 18 months earlier. The net increase of four percentage points in the past 18 months constitutes an additional 8 million unchurched adults nationwide. The bulk of that increase was attributable to larger percentages of Baby Busters (rising from 31% to 39%), men (up from 33% to 40%) and non-white adults (now 30%, previously 22%) who had not attended Christian church services. There was also substantial change among geographic regions. The most notable increase was in the South (up from 19% up to 26%). Smaller increases were registered in the Northeast (up from 34% to 39%) and the West (up from 34% to 38%). Meanwhile the percentage remained stable in the Midwest (26%). George Barna, the president of the company that conducted the research, noted that "the data show a continuation of the pattern that first emerged more than a decade ago, in which Americans feel tremendous freedom to construct their own religious perspectives and practices, regardless of traditions and time-honored teachings. It is amazing that we live in a period during which people are more interested in spirituality than at any time in the past half century, yet they are seeking the answers to their spiritual questions and needs from sources other than Christian churches. The American public is sending a clear message to Christian leaders: make Christianity accessible and practical or don't expect their participation." The researcher described the benefit for churches focusing on this challenge. "If the total unchurched population were to be decreased by just one percentage point, down to 30%, that would bring an additional two million adults into Christian churches. To put that in perspective, if those two million newcomers were divided evenly among all of the Protestant and Catholic churches in America, each congregation would grow by six people. That's more growth than the average congregation has seen in a long time." Barna went on to point out that one-third of the unchurched are affiliated with other, non-Christian faiths. Among the most prolific of those are Judaism (6% of the unchurched) and Islam (4% of the unchurched). Just one out of every six unchurched adults (17%) claims to be an atheist or agnostic. Submit your news--needs to: owner-hfe-online@xc.org CHURCH PLANTING (DAWN) - Wolfgang Fernandez 100137.1341@compuserve.com, reports about church growth in Norway: 'In the last two years over 60 new churches have been planted in Norway, and scores of Alpha groups and Alpha-type groups have been started. Every denomination has been involved in church planting, from the State Church to a new group of converted New Agers! The Church of Norway (State Church) has started seven new parishes. The Baptist have planted their first ones in years. The Vineyard has established five and they are establishing five new ones. A youth movement has arisen called Jesus Revolution and they are in 50 schools and have touched the lives of 20,000 young people. Ten new ethnic churches have also been started. The New Agers who got miraculously converted in the north have established their own church under the covering of respected evangelicals. However, not all is good news, the State Church is facing a major battle as three bishops are pushing for the ordination of practicing homosexuals. Apparently they enjoy the support of the new bishop of Oslo. However 60% of the students in the Oslo Theological Faculty are evangelicals and they are holding weekly prayer meetings! There is open acceptance in all denominations to the need for church planting. And the attendees of the second DAWN conference reaffirmed their commitment to the goal of 500 new churches by 2003. Despite the worst snows in 15 years, which closed roads, airports and train stations, the >consultation was an excellent and important event. Reports were given on the latest developments in Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, England, Belgium and The Netherlands. There was also a teaching combination with Christian Schwartz (Natural Church Development) with Wolfgang Simson (The changing paradigm of Church - House Church). It was exciting and quite challenging. Much time was spent in prayer for the nations and for one another. The Lord spoke to many of the participants in very special ways. No Apostolic Succession, no Ecclesiastical correctness, no rigidity of orthodox doctrine, can be themselves and in themselves give us this; it comes, and can only come, from a clearer vision of the Christ, a more complete surrender to His call and to the bearing of His Cross. ...
