1. PASTOR PHIL'S PRAYER LETTER

Several "surprises" greeted me recently:
*An intercessor told me how God had been leading her to pray for me
*An opportunity to preach and lead prayer at a church in another state because of a referral from a colleague in yet a different state
*A generous check appeared in the mail from a ministry also devoted to mobilizing prayer...
How thankful we are for those who have been willing to allow the Lord to support our ministry with prayer or encouragement or funding!

By God's grace,
The NPPN is partnering with several strategic ministries, such as  Promise Keepers, the National Coalition of Men's Ministries and the National Association of Local Church Prayer Leaders, to strengthen the role of men in the prayer movement (see Colossians 4:12-13)...
I have recently begun serving as a National Facilitator on the Cities / Communities Team of Mission America...
International Renewal Ministries has invited me to be one of three facilitators for their New England Prayer Summit...
Several Associations of Southern Baptist Churches have invited me to lead Prayer Adventure Weekends; to cast a vision for strategic corporate prayer throughout their congregations...

Like many of you, I have more opportunities than the time to exploit them fully for the Kingdom.  But, your prayers, encouragement and financial support keep me going!

My thanks and God's blessings,

Pastor Phil

The World's Religions
  In the year 2000...
· 2.1 billion people identify themselves as Christians
· 1.2 billion people are Muslims.
· 1 billion are Buddhists or practice Chinese traditional religions.
· 850 million are Hindus.
· 230 million are atheists.

Pray the promises of God, directly from Scripture, for each religion. Identify nations where each religion predominates; pray for revival and awakening...

AN UNCOMMON PRAYER FORMAT
>From: Worldforjesus@aol.com

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD: THAT'S RELATIONSHIP!
I shall not want
 That's Supply!

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures
 That's Rest!

He leadeth me beside the still waters
 That's Refreshment!

He restoreth my soul
 That's Healing!

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
 That's Guidance!

For His name sake
 That's Purpose!

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the Shadow of death
 That's Testing!

I will fear no evil
 That's Faithfulness!

For Thou art with me
 That's Protection!

Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me
 That's Discipline!

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies
 That's Hope!

Thou annointest my head with oil
 That's Consecration!

My cup runneth over
 That's Abundance!

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life
 That's a Blessing!

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
 That's Security!

Forever
 That's Eternity!

Face it; the Lord is crazy about you. Have a Blessed Day!

--->NPPNote: Read each section of the Psalm then pause for 2 or 3 to pray in response. When they have concluded, move to the next.  Do not expect everyone to pray after each phrase.

3.  SEEK GOD FOR THE CITY: 2002 PRAYER GUIDE
>From: "Paul Dozeman" <pdoze@cityrestoration.org>
>In:  City View from City Restoration
>At: http://www.cityrestoration.org

WayMakers has released Seek God for the City 2002, a prayer guide for spiritual awakening that has helped thousands of everyday Christians learn to pray in biblical hope for the people in their communities. The prayer guide is dated to unite believers in prayer during the 40 days leading up to and including Palm Sunday (Feb. 13 through Mar. 24, 2002). This prayer-guide series has proved to be an ideal resource to brighten the Lenten season with city-reaching hope for all.

Revised every year, the 64-page booklet includes practical ideas for prayerwalking, fasting, and praying from Scripture. Each day's material offers select verses from the Old Testament and the Gospels with freshly worded prayers. Each day also includes a focus on one of the many kinds of people who make up a community, such as mothers, police, pastors, gangs, men, university students, the military, the homeless, sick people, children, marriages, and more. Pertinent Scriptures and practical menus help believers pray together with insight.

Now in its seventh year, Seek God for the City 2002 is authored by Steve Hawthorne, director of WayMakers, a ministry helping Christians envision and focus their lives on a world in which every person is prayed for and every people group is evangelized. WayMakers equips Christians in ways of accomplishing "saturation prayer" by which prayer is offered for every person in a region or community.

Speaking about Seek God for the City, Steve says, "This guide helps believers find ways to express God's heart for their communities to be transformed by the power of the Gospel."

Seek God for the City 2002
is priced at $2.00 each, with significant discounts for churches or groups ordering quantities of more than 20. If you are a pastor or you hold a position as a prayer leader, call WayMakers at 1-800-264-5214 for a complimentary review copy.

4.  PRAY ARLINGTON (TX): PRAYER POINTS
>From: "Tim Tremaine" <prayarlington@worldnet.att.net>

As you know, America's military has engaged the enemy in Afghanistan. Our prayers are with them and our leadership. But how do we pray concerning the potential for continuing terrorist attacks in America. The enemy is likely here already so we can't pray that they won't come. The plans and preparations have likely been made so we can't pray against that. What I believe we can pray for is to prevent the real enemy, Satan and his demonic kingdom, from emboldening these human agents of evil to attempt their evil plots. Pray that demonic forces behind the terrorists will be prevented from giving them the courage to attempt to fulfill their dastardly assignments. Also pray that our intelligence and law enforcement agencies will have the grace and wisdom to uncover and thwart any attempted terrorist activity.

Below I have attached prayer points issued by the National Prayer Center and forwarded by the National Association of Local Church Prayer Leaders (NALCPL) and the World Prayer Center.  I encourage you to make these prayer  points available to your congregations to foster unified prayer for America.

Pray Arlington, Inc. is also developed a prayer strategy to increase prayers for America called The HomeFront.  Ask your congregations to pick one evening a week and invite there neighbors over for 30 minutes of prayer for America.  The prayer points below can be used.  They can also pray for any relatives or friends of their neighbors affected by 9/11 or the American military response.  Let's "keep the homefires of intercession burning!"

For King and Kingdom, Tim Tremaine, Director, Pray Arlington, Inc., Regional Representative, NALCPL

PRAYER POINTS FOR THE NATION

1) Pray for the survivors of the WTC tragedy who are still recovering from their wounds.
2) Pray for the families of the victims who are looking for peace and comfort, especially those whose bodies have not been found.

5.  CALUMET CITY (CHICAGO), IL: SOLEMN ASSEMBLY
>From: pastor_bill_whitford@juno.com

Phil, I called a Solemn Assembly for Monday night at 7:00 P.M. here at the church.  I also extended this to include the community as I felt the need to call the community to prayer. I also invited all the pastors and their respective congregations. Three pastors showed up but few of their congregation came. I am pleased to announce that we had thirty eight people in the sanctuary for what started out to be an hour long prayer service.

We began with some scripture and I felt the need to teach as we went on what little I had learned about a Solemn Assembly from my studies during the day. We incorporated hymns and other messages in song. As I tried to discern the Lord's will I found the ACTS acrostic on my heart, that combined with the idea of the solemn assembly being a time of ritual purity of God's people for the purpose of prayer and intercession led me to use this model.

We prayed the Adoration, then the Confession, then the Thankfulness part through pastoral prayers by the various pastors. At 7:45 PM the Lord spoke to my heart and said Concert of Prayer for the requests I gave you earlier. I divided the people up into prayer triplets and led the remainder of the service as a concert of prayer with the pastors praying on the platform and each one focusing in on the specific request as a transition. As I observed and did the pastoral tasks of listening God, discerning what happening with the people as well as myself, some of them were deeply touched and there was weeping and a sense of mourning.

We concluded at around 9:00 PM. As of yet I have no complaints or negative feed back. The group was composed of all ages including the youth who for the first time since my tenure here actually prayed with one another.  Since our conversation on Saturday concerning a Solemn Assembly plus what little research I could do I have concluded this is a responsibility of all spiritual leaders and especially those of us who serve the Master as undershepherds. I wish you to know that deep in my Spirit I sense an unprecedented excitement that our Lord is about to move in such a mighty way that words cannot describe. I don't know exactly what it is but I sense that something of significant spiritual importance is
unfolding and will continue to do so.

Grace and Peace, Pastor Bill Whitford

--->NPPNote: This congregation is one of over 200 in a Chicago association which is being challenged to begin the new year by calling their members to a Solemn Assembly.  Many are using Returning To Holiness by Greg Frizzell as a reference.

>From: FreshPrayer Notification <webmaster@waymakers.org>

This month's issue of FreshPrayer is called "For those facing times of crisis" from Psalm 94.

This issue was planned and initially drafted long before the tragedy of September 11, 2001. Another passage was planned for October 1, but we brought this passage to you ahead of schedule. 7.  A POWERFUL QUESTION REGARDING SEPTEMBER 11
>From: "Jeff Roberts \(JR\)" <JRoberts@telocity.com>

My dear Christian brothers and sisters, we have a God-given opportunity to provide answers over the next few days and weeks. As people ask the question, "How could this happen?" we are in a position to point them to the One who makes a difference. While the rest of the world cries that our lives will never be the same again, I rest in the quiet assurance that God is in complete control. But, how to answer the question. I keep being reminding of Jesus' words in Luke 13. When news comes that disciples have been slain in the temple while offering sacrifices, Jesus asks "Why do you think this happened? Because they were worse than others? No. And when the tower of Siloam fell and killed eighteen people, was it because they were evil? No. But what about you?" (The JR paraphrase.) God does not reveal His purposes in these disasters. But He does use them as a warning, what about you? Suppose you're sitting at the desk, and it's your day to die. Or traveling to visit family. When your time comes, what about you? This is a powerful question, and people's answers set a course for their eternity. They will be asking. We need to be prayerfully alert, and lovingly, gently asking these questions. Pray for opportunities. God will provide.
In Christ, Jeff Roberts

8.  BLACK CHURCH WEEK OF PRAYER FOR HEALING AIDS
>From: Assist News Service - Assistcomm@cs.com
>At:  http://www.assist-ministries.com
>By Dan Wooding

NEW YORK, NY (ANS) - Black churches across America are preparing for the 13th annual Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS March 3-9, 2002.

The special week of intercession, organized by The Balm In Gilead, is a national campaign, which mobilizes Black churches to become centers for AIDS education and compassion.  Since its inception in 1989, The Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS has become the nation's largest AIDS awareness campaign targeting the Black community.

"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 1999, more African Americans were reported with AIDS than any other racial/ethnic group," said a spokesperson for the New York-based Christian ministry.  "The rate is more than 2 times greater than the rate for Hispanics and 8 times greater than that for whites."

Pernessa Seele, CEO and Founder of The Balm In Gilead, went on to say, "Just as all of us have been affected by the recent attacks on the U.S., we have all been affected and under seize by HIV/AIDS for more than twenty years.  The AIDS epidemic has reached a national health state of emergency among Black people living in the United States, Africa and the Caribbean."

In the past, churches recognized the Week by hosting AIDS workshops, distributing information, devoting a sermon or song to those affected and infected by the virus.  This year, during the Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS, Black church leaders at both the national and local level will call for a national health state of emergency regarding AIDS in the Black community.

To help churches participate in the Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS, The Balm In Gilead, beginning in January, will distribute Black Church HIV/AIDS resource kits.  Churches are encouraged to call early and register their church for the Week of Prayer and reserve their free information resource kit.

The Balm In Gilead is the only organization in the United States dedicated exclusively to empowering churches in the struggle against the devastating pandemic of HIV/AIDS in the Black community.  Recently, the Balm In Gilead expanded its work to engage churches to address HIV in Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Kenya and South Africa.

For more information about the Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS or to receive your church's information resource kit, call The Balm In Gilead at (888) 225-6243.

9. UNCOMMON PRAYER MEETINGS: PRAY THE TOP 40
>From: CiwWAB@aol.com

Dear Phil,
We received this message from a Christian leader who has a ministry in Southern India. In America we are bombarded daily with Christian messages on things to do. It seems that every sermon and every article has life's solution in 3 or 4 things to do. If you listen often enough the things to do grow to be 200 things to do and your mind discounts almost everything from overload. We only need one to do list and that is what Jesus taught. I think you will enjoy this.

Be a Christian Internet Witness and send this to others.

Warner A. Bonner, Christian Internet Witness
----------------

Below is the article on the Top Forty teachings of Jesus that I mentioned.   It really would be good to get it widely circulated. Thank you for anything you can do to help in that direction. We have others along a similar line if anyone is interested.

Most Christians say that they are followers of Jesus Christ.  But when you examine that claim a bit more closely, you find that they are each arbitrarily following some concept of right and wrong that they have picked up from society, from tradition, and from personal desires. These concepts bear little resemblance to the teachings of the Jesus we find in the Bible. Even when we do find ourselves doing something that he taught, it is more often by accident than by deliberate attempt to read what he said to do and then to do it.

For that reason, we decided to study the actual "commands" of Jesus, as contained in the gospels, and to imagine what the world (and church) would be like if people actually followed them today. Listed below are just forty things that Jesus told his followers to do. (They're not really "the top forty," just the first forty that we thought of when putting this article
together!)

As you read them, take note of how many times there is an instinctive reaction which wants to say, "He didn't mean me," or "He didn't mean for that to be taken literally," or even "That doesn't apply today."

How many of these commands have you tried to practice in your walk with God?  Are we REALLY followers of Jesus?  or just followers of religious tradition?

Dave McKay:  fold@idl.net.au     /   http://www.jesuschristians.com

10. PASTOR AND WIFE SMALL GROUP
>From: "GCsinkule" <gcsinkule@email.msn.com>

The newly combined Pastor and Wife Small Group is a support group that consists of your ministry peers. It is open to pastors and wives and does not require both to be present for participation. It exists to give support, exchange ideas, and edify each other in the Lord. Its goal is to heal hurts, relieve built up stress, build relationships and break down walls as we come together for one cause under one God.

It is a safe place where you can be yourself as you share what is lying heavy on your heart and where confidentiality is highly regarded. It's a place where Pastor's leave their doctrines at the door and come together to experience the Lord in their mist. Where respect and genuine love is given. A place where no one will judge you, admonish you, yes at times, hold you accountable, yes at times; but not judge.

It is a place of belonging and a refuge from the pressures that go along with ministry life. It's a place to come together both men and women to show genuine concern for each other and for the welfare of the whole Body of Christ. It is a place to believe on the Lord's promises, share in His Hope, Live in His joy, and Go in His peace

The Pastor and Wife Small Group is not a place for control, gossip, or secrets. It is not a quick fix solution to your problems or a place that calls for perfection. It is not a one on one conversation or counseling session. It is not meant to be an escape from reality, or a time to forget about your troubles and cares but a place to deal and overcome them by the Word and the Spirit of God (Hebrews 10:24-25).

In addition the Pastors and Wife's Small Group is not for everyone; it is only one tool in many to gain a truer picture of the reality of your calling and life in the ministry. It is one-way to gather together in the name of Jesus Christ with like minds. If you do choose to come you can anticipate God showing up.

Thank you and God bless,
Glenn & Claudia Sinkule,  69-150 Garner Ave. Cathedral City, Ca. 92234

11.  UNCOMMON PRAYER MEETINGS: THE PRAYER OF PRAYERS
>From: "Terry J. Hallock" <watcong@galesburg.net >
>God Seekers Devotional by Pastor Terry J. Hallock

Matthew 6:9-13
"This is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.'"

THE PRAYER OF PRAYERS: No prayer has ever been more honored than The Lord's Prayer. For two thousand years it has been the model, not only for a Christian's prayer life, but for all of life itself.
"OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN": We are part of a heavenly family where God relates to us as His loved children. We do not serve a dead God or a heavenly tyrant. We're loved by "Our Father" who sent His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him might not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16) and who has prepared a heavenly inheritance for us that can never perish, spoil or fade (1 Peter 1:4).
"HALLOWED BY YOUR NAME, YOUR KINGDOM COME, YOUR WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN": The most important thing we can give to God is the worship, praise and glory due His name. It keeps our priorities straight by reminding us that He is God and we're not. The most important thing we can ask of God is that the perfect Kingdom of love, joy, peace and justice He has created in Heaven be recreated here on earth. We want His will to be done, not ours, and we seek it NOW. We seek His Kingdom to come, not man's, and we seek it NOW.
"GIVE US TODAY OUR DAILY BREAD": God is the source of our every need and each day lived in fellowship with His heart and dependence upon His love will open the floodgates of Heaven to meet those needs. Yet, like the Israelites in the dessert, His manna will be enough for today and today alone. Tomorrow we will need to depend on Him again.
"FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS, AS WE ALSO HAVE FORGIVEN OUR DEBTORS": There can be no relationship with the Father if we're separated from the rest of family. There can be no forgiveness from the Father if we won't forgive our brothers and sisters. How we forgive each other is how God will forgive us.
"AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION, BUT DELIVER US FROM THE EVIL ONE": James 1:13 teaches us that God is not tempted and never tempts anyone, so this petition is not asking God to refrain from that which He would never do in the first place. It is asking that He keep us from the deception of the devil and his temptations that move us from the perfect life-giving will of the Father into the killing will of Satan.
"FOR YOURS IS THE KINGDOM AND THE POWER AND THE GLORY FOREVER. AMEN." The Lord's Prayer ends where it began. For Jesus everything in life is wrapped between the love of God the Father and the power of God the Creator, Sustainer and Ruler. Only when we acknowledge that truth and submit to that reality will our prayers -- indeed our life itself -- find any meaning and purpose.

'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.'

>From: http://www.bpnews.net
>By:  James Dotson

Padgett's Creek Baptist Church hopes to rekindle a 200-year-old spiritual awakening in their rural community of Union, S.C., next year. But while an emphasis on prayer is likely similar to the revival early in the church's history, their methods are decidedly 21st-century.

The church is one of the first to use a new software and Bible study resource, "PrayTimer: Real Time for Real Prayer," published by the North American Mission Board. Pastor Keith Andrews said it is helping him not only organize and maintain church prayer lists but also to implement a comprehensive prayer strategy throughout the church.

"PrayTimer is going to be a key asset," Andrews said, "in getting our people on their knees and focusing on spiritual renewal."

That was just the sort of role envisioned by Thomas Wright, a prayer evangelism specialist who supervised  development of the software and wrote the companion Bible study on prayer. His motivation was just the sort of disparate prayer lists that can often overwhelm Christians, even those committed to praying for as many needs as possible in the time they have for prayer.

"I wanted to get one place where I could organize my prayer lists and pray for the most number of people in the least amount of time," he said. "And one of the best ways to do that of course is a database. But the PrayTimer study also tells how to create these prayer lists even if you do not use the software."

The PrayTimer database that resulted benefits individuals, small groups and entire churches. The user can input specific prayer requests, organize them by source, record answers and make various printed reports. The software also enables scheduling of prayer requests, allowing the user to decide whether to pray for that particular item monthly, weekly or daily. A list also can be configured for the weekly prayer meeting that omits personal items.

For Andrews, that scheduling allowed him to directly import his membership roster and set it up so he prays for everyone in the 218-member congregation by name every month. There also are modules for automatically importing daily Bible readings, missionary birthdays, missionary prayer requests and other lists.

In developing the software, Wright said he soon realized that the tool could be greatly enhanced by in-depth training on the role of personal and corporate prayer in the life of an individual and the congregation. The interest shown in test versions of the software revealed an obvious need.

"We found out that a lot of people interested in prayer aren't Christians, and the outreach Bible study grew out of the need to present the biblical expectations for prayer and the pray-er," he said.

The study covers the biblical basis for prayer and provides models for developing an effective prayer life that are supported by the software. Suggestions are included, for example, for praying for specific areas of national leadership and ministry on different days of the week. The software allows those lists to be automatically included and updated from the www.praytimer.org Internet site. Endorsements for the book and software have come from T.W. Hunt, Evelyn Christenson and other prayer leaders.

Wright also encourages the ACTS (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) model for prayer in both the Bible study and in the PrayTimer software, allowing users to input specific thoughts for each item. This also allows the software to be used as a prayer journal.

"Psalm 100:4 says we need to enter his gates with thanksgiving and praise, but so many of us begin with our supplications and demands for what God ought to be doing," Wright said.

At a time when national tragedy has prompted renewed interest in the spiritual, Wright said the time is right for churches and individuals to bolster their own prayer strategy -- which throughout history has preceded spiritual awakening.

"The PrayTimer is going to be a good tool for us to give to people who are seeking prayer in this awakening that we've had since Sept. 11," he said.

"PrayTimer: Real Time for Real Prayer" is available through LifeWay Christian Resources and LifeWay Christian Stores. For magazine use only: The cost is $18.99.

14. HOUSE OF PRAYER ... TOWARD 24-HOUR INTERCESSION
>From: "Crosswalk.com" <newssummaries@lists.crosswalk.com>
>Reply-To: Religion Today Summaries <newssummaries@lists.crosswalk.com>

Created in January, the All Nations House of Prayer is part of a national evangelical movement to create 24-hour prayer centers in every city in the United States. There are 35 services each week at the small, one-story building in Grand Prairie, Texas.  Volunteers from 16 area churches lead the services, which last from one to two hours, and fill about nine hours a day.  The Friday night service - which attracts up to 150 worshipers - is the only one at which a collection plate is passed, reports The Dallas Morning News.

The Grand Prairie prayer center is modeled after the International House of Prayer of Kansas City, known as IHOP, which was created two years ago.  About 100 houses of prayer have been created nationwide, and the idea is catching on internationally, as well, with churches in Sweden, South Africa, Israel, China and England.

Each service has at least three worship leaders, all volunteers from supporting churches.  Most are nondenominational, Pentecostal or charismatic.

The services are a mix of singing and devotions. The idea for the All Nations IHOP came to Norm Frederick, missions pastor at a Grand Prairie church, after attending a training workshop at the Kansas City IHOP. "We are continuing to see an increase in the hearts of God's people for the desire of night and day worship ... It is an ongoing love affair with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords," he said.

15.  CALLING A DENOMINATION TO PRAYER

Joint Statement On A Call To Prayer For The Nation In Its Crisis
by Dr. Morris H. Chapman, president of the Executive Committee,
and Dr. James Merritt, president of the Southern Baptist Convention

On September 11th, we issued a statement, which said in part, "We call upon our Southern Baptist family everywhere to begin a prayer vigil; to go upon our knees for the families of the victims of these attacks, for our nation's leaders, and for our beloved country, that God would turn the hearts of our nation back to Him."

We believe it is time to give new emphasis to that call to prayer.  The need for faithful vigil is not less today than it was on that day – if anything, it is greater.

In times of crisis, God's people have often been called to pray, and to repent, and to seek the face of God for His blessing.  In a time of great national disaster, Joel exhorted his people to "sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the Lord your God, and cry to the Lord." (Joel
1:14, 2:15)

Another illustration comes to us from about 800 years before the coming of Christ. Ancient Judah was in mortal danger as vicious enemies threatened the peace and safety of their land.  Their leader called them together and cried out to the Lord, "If a calamity comes upon us, whether a sword of judgment or plague or famine, we will stand here in your (God's) presence, in the temple that bears your name, and we will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us." (II Chronicles 20:9). In humility he cried before God, and said, "Lord we have no power, and we do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you." (II Chronicles 20:12).  That thoughtful and godly leader modeled the
approach needed today.

These two examples encourage us to call God's people to serious, focused, and constant prayer.  This hour in America is a great test of our moral and spiritual character.  As individuals and as a nation, we have wandered very far from the Lord, and need to come home to Him now.  We have no right to expect others to pray when we do not do so.  No
one in the nation is more responsible to pray and seek the face of God than are the people of our churches.

We call upon the 16 million Southern Baptists and the 42,000 Southern Baptist Churches spread across this land to commit themselves to regular, specific, and focused prayer for our nation and for its leaders in these trying days.  We are specifically asking that individual Southern Baptists devote a quarter hour, a half hour, an hour, or more, each week praying for our nation, its leaders, and our military men and women who are in harm's way.  We also ask each Southern Baptist pastor, in churches large and small, to devote a special time of prayer for our nation in at least one Sunday service each month.  Many are already doing that, and more.  We further invite all believers of good will to join us in this work of God.

A prayer guide has been prepared to assist those who will commit to this investment of time and spiritual energy.  This guide is intended to help you pray pointedly and with purpose.  The prayer guide and other helpful resources can be accessed at: http://www.inallthingspray.net.

The Lord said, "Men ought always to pray, and not to faint."  Now – together, join us in this holy work!

16.  SLAVE-SHIP PROMPTS PRAYERS FOR RECONCILIATION
>From: Gene Brooks <gbrooks@missioncarolina.org>
>By Eric Tiansay

Prayer leaders in South Carolina are using the arrival of a symbol of America's slave history to address past wrongs. They believe that a visit by a replica of the famous slave ship Amistad could help pave the way for racial reconciliation in the area.

Intercessors from California, Oklahoma and Maryland will join with others from South Carolina for a special prayer service Sunday as the 80-foot reproduction arrives in Georgetown for a two-week educational visit.

The original Amistad was immortalized in Steven Spielberg's 1997 film, which told the story of the ship mutiny in 1839. Fifty-three men, women and children who had been kidnapped from their village near the West Coast of Africa and illegally sold into slavery revolted and took over the Amistad, "The Virginian-Pilot" reported.

Captured two months later near New England and placed in a New Haven, Conn., jail, they eventually won their freedom after a landmark case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The Amistad revolt and subsequent trials galvanized the abolitionist movement in America and inspired the founding of several traditional black universities, the newspaper said.

The recreated vessel is the centerpiece of festivals, interfaith services and educational exhibits about slavery and the road to freedom, "The Washington Post" reported. But for the ship's first day in Georgetown, the replica will be the focus of a reconciliation worship service and intercessors.

Gene Brooks, chairman of Mission Carolina, a Clinton, S.C.-based prayer ministry, told Charisma News Service that the new Amistad tour is a secular effort, but the Georgetown visit is "a great opportunity for some concentrated reconciliation prayers over slavery issues." He added: "It's a totally secular deal, but we wanted to do something beneficial for the kingdom." Most of those taking part in Sunday's service are African American, including one who is a descendant of a slave trader from Savannah, Ga.

According to Brooks' research, Georgetown was the site of the first slaves taken in North America. According to ship logs, a Spanish galleon anchored near the area in the 1500s went ashore and invited Native Americans aboard for a party, where they got drunk. Brooks said the galleon then sailed for Haiti and the Dominican Republic, where the crew
sold them as slaves.

"Spiritually, I believe there's a root of racism in this area [that has spread] through all of North America," said Brooks, noting that Georgetown is only two hours north of Charleston, S.C., widely considered the hub of slavery during the Colonial period and Civil War era. "I believe we've got a job to uproot what the enemy has done here, and plant a holy root in the land."

Brooks said that the president of a local non-Christian university insisted that a worship service be held in Georgetown before residents could tour the ship. The reconciliation service -- a community-wide effort featuring several congregations from various denominations -- will be held Sunday at a black church. After the service, worshipers will be bused to the ship and Brooks' team will pray over the vessel.
