*PASTOR PHIL’S PRAYER LETTER

Interesting thought in a recent note from Bob and Marilyn Yawberg (PastorsInPrayer@aol.com)

“Prayer,” said C.S. Storms, “in and of itself possesses no power.  Prayer is powerful because God is powerful, and prayer is the means through which that divine power is released and channeled into our lives.”

This is a good reminder to us all not to trust in prayer, our style of prayer, our previous “successes” in prayer, even our devotion to prayer.  Today is a good day to, once again, place our trust in the One to whom we pray - especially those prayers in which we have been doing more listening than talking...

--->NPPNote: Several items in this newsletter have already taken place. We apologize for the delay in sending you this important news - Please pray as you are led over the work already set in motion by the Holy Spirit...

*START THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR WITH PRAYER

>From: Teachers4Jesus@aol.com

Pastors, a key for improving public education lies within your reach.  Did you know there are more than 650,000 Christians serving in public education?  In 1985, an organization based in California, Christian Educators Association Intl. began a program to recognize and honor Christian public school educators.

Christian public school teachers often feel ostracized by the Christian community because they don’t teach in Christian schools.  Since EDUCATORS SUNDAY began in 1985, thousands of churches now designate one Sunday in September to pray for, commission or even devote an entire service to Christians in public education.  For a free brochure how your church can be involved see information below.  Over the past several years, CEAI has encouraged the Church to celebrate their educators on the Sunday before “See You at the Pole” prayer day for teens in public school.  “Honor a Public School Educator” will be the theme of churches, congregations and civic groups across the nation on *Sunday, September 17, 2000.  Public school educators will be honored and recognized for their contribution in the lives of the children they impact daily.  Since 1985, Christian Educators Association International has encouraged faith congregations to set aside the a Sunday in September*  as a special day to “Tell a Teacher” and other educators how important they are to our nation and to our children.

This important movement has grown each year as more and more churches participate annually.  Forrest Turpen, executive director of CEAI, states, “We become alarmed by what we see, hear and read about public education, but we forget there are hundreds of thousands Christian educators making a difference in our schools every day.”

For more information call: 626-798-1124 or write, CEAI, P.O. Box 41300, Pasadena, CA 91114 or e-mail: judy@ceai.org.  Some churches meet on Saturday or prefer to celebrate on another day of the week.

*NPPN REPRESENTATIVE NEEDED

>From: CEAIEDUCA@aol.com

--->NPPNote: If you are interested, qualified, and able to represent the NPPN at this meeting, let Forest know (please copy me, so I am aware of your commitment)

The annual meeting of the Mission America National Committee, October 25-27,

2000 in St. Louis is just around the corner.  As a member of the Public School Education Ministry, may I request a favor?

We are looking for individuals concerned about ministering to our public schools from your denomination or parachurch ministry.  All of us have a desire to reach the 49,000,000 children and over 3.3 million educators in public schools.

Would you prayerfully consider sending a representative to assist in developing a strategy to impact public schools?  The Network will be finalizing its mission, vision and purpose statement and then work on action plans for next year along with significant 5 year goals.

The truth is, great things can be accomplished if the body of Christ can unite and work together to bring God’s love and His power to public schools, building by building, and school district to school district.

Please prayerfully consider attending the Public School Education Ministry or send a representative.

The Lord loves each one of those 49,000,000 children and He has a plan for their life.  We have an opportunity as faith communities (local churches) to impact the institution of public schools if we cast a vision and are willing to mobilize for ministry.

Please let me know, Forrest@ceai.org,  or Pastor Bob Ordeman, vmibrowns@aol.com, if you can be at our Network meeting or will be sending a representative.

Warmly in Christ, Forrest L. Turpen

Executive Director, Christian Educators Assn. Intl.  - Philippians 3:14

*MANITOU SPRINGS, CO: NEW CHURCH PLANT

>From: John Burton <yoop@ureach.com>

The Lord led my wife and I to the Colorado Springs area to plant a church in near by Manitou Springs.  This city sits at the foot of Pike’s Peak and is saturated with witchcraft, paganism, healing arts, etc.  Please pray first of all for the right relationships as we are starting from scratch with no mother church support.

Also, pray for divine appointments and favor with the leaders of the city.

*AD2000 - FUTURE OF PRAYER MOVEMENT

>From: Marty Cassady <MartyC@globalharvest.org>

The Prayer Track of the AD2000 movement has come to a close.  The entire AD2000 movement will be officially shut down at the Jerusalem meeting in December 2000.

Some things will continue on under the direction of the persons in charge of the various ministries of the Prayer Track.

For example:

The US PRAYER TRACK is totally under the direction of Eddie and Alice Smith and will go in any direction that they determine.

The SPIRITUAL MAPPING DIVISION under the direction of George Otis III is continuing, under the Sentinel Group.

The OBSERVATORY, a division of Global Harvest Ministries is also a repository for spiritual mapping information under the direction of Derrick Trimble.

CITY TRANSFORMATION, under Ed Silvoso will continue on under Harvest Evangelism.

The 10-40 WINDOW Project, as far as the Prayer Track is concerned, has gained adequate momentum to carry itself in the future.  The unreached people’s needs are fairly well defined and many mission organizations are now deploying efforts accordingly.  Hundreds of unreached peoples groups have been adopted and are targeted for prayer, evangelism and social efforts.

The JESUS FILM is meeting with incredible success and is now translated in most major language groups of the world.  This effort will continue into the foreseeable future.

The unreached people data is available in books, and CD-rom and many mission organizations and research groups are carrying on with the unfinished task.

The AD2000 movement had a clearly defined beginning and end.  The Prayer Track has attempted to transition down to the grass roots level all over the world.  The future of this grass roots association will be continuing through the 70 International Prayer Networks, under the umbrella of Global Harvest Ministries.  The giving and receiving of prayer information is handled through The Observatory, under Derrick Trimble.  Daily prayer points are posted on the Internet for these networks to keep abreast of the latest international prayer needs.

The US Prayer Room Initiative and World Prayer Center’s 24-hour prayer program is now in the hands of New Life Church who is developing this with enthusiasm.  There will be a yearly meeting of prayer room leaders under New Life’s direction since they have such a good model going.

*DC: “PRAYERS ON THE MALL”

>From: USAPRAY@aol.com

The Sept. 3 Washington Post headlines show that your prayers were definitely answered in a big way.  Many reporters wrote in terms of “tens of thousands of Christian youth” gathering on the Mall last Saturday, and size estimates vary - from 75,000 to 100,000 or more.  The Washington Post accounts noted that the rounds of repentance and concerted prayer called for reconciliation between children and parents, an end to abortion and sexual immorality, the return of prayer in schools, a call to fasting and loving evangelism, personal commitment to purity and radical Nazarite-type lifestyles, and the sparking of a “new spiritual revolution.”   Most in attendance fasted for the entire day.  Please join churches, prayer groups and intercessors in offering “follow-up prayers,” asking that the Lord guard and protect the lives of these and all Christian youth, and that He nurture and bring to fruition all that He initiated and imparted through The Call.  A 40-day Prayer and Fasting Vigil was set for September 20-October 29.

Students will be fasting and praying over their lunch hours in schools

across America.  You are invited to join with them.  Sign-up to receive

youth prayer updates at e-mail PrayYifa@aol.com

*NEWSPAPER COLUMN: CHURCHES PRAYING FOR SCHOOLS

>From: MarkLuth@aol.com

Here’s the latest installment of my column written for the Press Community

newspapers in our area. It’s not scintillating writing. But the events it

talks about are truly wonderful! God is at work in our area and it’s

exciting to be part of it!  Your Friend in Christ, Mark

The Start of Something Wonderful

Last November, I got a telephone call from Dr. Mike Ward. Dr. Ward is the superintendent of the West Clermont Local School District. He was calling with a question. How, he wondered, could the area’s churches and pastors best be approached for their ideas and input regarding the future of the school system he heads?

Dr. Ward explained that he and his staff were soliciting the opinions and ideas of all sorts of individuals and groups in order to address the critical issue of how to prepare young people in the West Clermont Local School District for life in the twenty-first century. In subsequent months, focus groups with senior citizens, high school students, business persons, parents, and other area residents would happen. Dr. Ward wanted to make sure that church members and pastors were given their say-so as well.

It was then the turn of Reverend David Ashworth, pastor of Amelia United Methodist Church, and me to make telephone calls. We believe we contacted every pastor in the district, asking them to attend a meeting with Dr. Ward and district administrative staff.

The meetings that followed brought two important results. One was that the clergy shared many of the same opinions offered by others in the district.  They said that schools ought to be places where everybody—students, teachers, and parents—was treated with respect. They said that schools ought to be places where young people learn how to learn, an important skill set in the twenty-first century when workers likely will change careers four times.

They said that, irrespective of religious (or non- religious) backgrounds, the community ought to be able to agree on what was acceptable and unacceptable behavior. The clergy also said that both they and the people of their churches wanted to help the schools. Above all, they said they wanted to cultivate a sense of community in which all young people are valued and where the whole community cared about children.

But, something else resulted from those meetings. We learned that we didn’t just love each other because Jesus commanded us to love our neighbor. We actually liked each other! We learned the truth of words found in the Old Testament, “How very good and pleasant it is when kindred live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1)

Each of us felt that God was calling us and our churches to meet together, to work together, and to pray together. Since that time, a West Clermont clergy group has been meeting, praying, and planning together on a monthly basis.

A three-point vision has emerged for our fledgling group. First: We’ve committed ourselves to bringing the churches of our area together for mission, worship, and growing in faith in Christ. Second: We want to serve the schools in whatever ways we can. Third: We’re committed to praying with and for each other to foster the bonds of unity among followers of Jesus in our area.

There are many ways we want to pursue that vision. But the most immediate and visible means is an event to which I want to invite every resident of our area.

On Sunday, August 27, at 2:00 P.M., in the auditorium of Glen Este High School, there will be a prayer service. We’ll be praying for students, teachers, administrators, staff, and parents of the West Clermont Local School District. We’ll be asking God to bless the year with safety and educational productivity. We’ll ask God to grant everyone who is a part of education in our school district the guidance and wisdom they need.

We’ll be asking all the members of our churches to attend. We’re inviting all the students, parents, residents, and employees of the district to be present. If we have an overflow crowd, we’ll view that as a happy problem!

The missions of schools and churches are not the same. But one part of the mission of churches is to fulfill Jesus’ “Great Commandment”: to love God completely and to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. While respecting the separation of Church and State, the West Clermont clergy behind this upcoming prayer service want to share God’s love with our community’s schools. So do our churches. My hope is that the prayer service is just the start of wonderful things!

[Mark Daniels is pastor of Friendship Church. Pastors who are already part of the August 27 prayer service include clergy from Mount Carmel Church of the Nazarene, Faith Presbyterian Church, Amelia United Methodist Church, Bells Lane Baptist Church, First Baptist Church of Amelia, Amelia Church of the Nazarene, Love and Faith Fellowship, Christian Life Center, and Friendship.]

*NO MORE PUBLIC PRAYER FOR THE SICK???

>From: “Religion Today News - religiontoday.crosswalk.com ...Does public prayer for the sick sometimes invade people’s privacy? Such prayers have become a legal concern in some situations, according to The Dallas Morning News (http://www.dallasnews.com/). Pastors who once freely prayed for the sick by name in a service, or printed information in the church bulletin, have reluctantly stopped, or offer only a general prayer.

...Americans are more worried these days about their privacy being compromised, according to the newspaper. Pastors say information about a person’s illness or personal problem, sometimes given without their knowledge, can spread on an email prayer chain list or chat room, sometimes with erroneous details.  ...Also, congregants may not want information about their illnesses being mentioned in church because their employer, an estranged family member, or an insurance agent may be in the congregation. That is true in large, more impersonal churches more often than in small congregations, pastors say.  ...United Methodist Bishop William Oden of Texas told the Morning News that naming illness in worship services or bulletins is so common that pastors sometimes are criticized if they fail to do it. Listing only the names of the sick in a church bulletin “whets the appetite for wanting more information.”

*PRAYER WALK FOR SCHOOLS

>From: “Steve Loopstra” <MCOP@XC.Org>

Here is an easy and powerful prayer activity for your church/ MOPS group or others concerned about our schools.

Steve Loopstra, Prayer Transformation Ministries

Prayer Walk For Schools---

Join a growing prayer movement targeting public and private schools just prior to the 2000-01 school year.

Prayer Walk for Schools is in its third year of gathering Christians in an easy-to-implement strategy of praying God’s blessing on schools. This year’s prayer walk is scheduled for Monday evening, August 21, at 7:00 p.m.  The prayer strategy is simple: Gather at the front entrance of the school of your choice, form groups of two or three, and prayer walk around the school—interceding for that school as God directs. There is no formal organization or appointed leadership—just Christians gathering at the same time for the purpose of “praying on site with insight.” Last year some 400 churches around the state were involved in the Prayer Walk for Schools. A bulletin insert is available from Prayer Transformation Ministries to promote the event in your church. Call (612) 278-1717 for more information.

*PRAYING FOR THE UNREACHED AROUND THE WORLD

>From: USPRAYERTRACK@cs.com

In 1997,  Pastor Michael Fletcher and the Manna Church of Fayetteville,

NC, took up the challenge of recruiting 10 churches to pray for each of

1,739 unreached people groups in the world. The church now reports that

22,850 churches have committed to pray for the unreached people groups that

have little or no access to the good news of God’s love, exceeding the goal

by almost a third.

*BUENA PARK,CA: PRAYERWAK 2000

>From: “ICHTHUS Ministries International, Inc.” <ichthus@prayerneeds.org>

Prayer Walk 2000 to Conclude With Commitment to Pray for Governmental

Leaders

BUENA PARK, CALIF. - September 30, 2000. One hundred are expected to gather at Peak Park for the Prayer Walk 2000 event planned for Orange County, California and one million are expected to make an on-line commitment to pray for our nations governmental leaders. ICHTHUS Ministries International, Inc., which is headed up by the Rev. Mike Martin, of Buena Park, California is sponsoring the prayer walk in Buena Park on September 30th. ICHTHUS Ministries International has operated an Internet prayer ministry known as PrayerNeeds.Org since April of last year.

Martin now says he wants to focus on the local community and on getting the local church and the local Christian believer committed to pray for their governmental leaders. Martin believes that prayer is the only way we as Christians can expect to see our nation change and he often quotes 2 Chronicles 7:14 as his guide.

Those involved in the Prayer Walk 2000 event will gather at Peak Park for a half hour rally then they will divide into teams of four and walk the city distributing door hangers that say “We prayed for you today.” “The point is not to evangelize the community on this day,” says Martin, “only to pray.” The prayer walk event will conclude with a Bar-B-Que and a victory rally at the park. “The churches in the community are excited; they are raising money for the event and providing volunteers.”

Martin says that this years prayer walk is only the beginning. “We want this to become an annual event from May though September of each year in many cities and eventually spreading nation wide.” This year, and every year to follow, Martin will ask millions to log on to the PrayerNeeds.Org web site and make a covenant to pray for the government. The commitment forms will be taken each year to the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington DC.

Those wanting more information on current or upcoming prayer walk events, can contact Mike Martin by logging onto the PrayerNeeds.Org web site at http://www.PrayerNeeds.Org,  by e-mail at prayerwalk@prayerneeds.org , by US mail at ICHTHUS Ministries International, Inc., P O Box 455, Buena Park, CA 90621 or by phone / fax at 714-521-8362.

*PRAYER BUDDY, ANYBODY?

>From: Sandra L Turner <wndnfire@juno.com>

The Lord brought Brother John to me as a prayer partner & an intercession partner over a year or so ago.  At least once a month, sometimes twice a month, whatever the Lord leads or moves on us to call each other & pray together.  You pray as the Holy Spirit leads you to. It is a powerful way to come together in the spirit & take part in forming an inpenetrable wall of prayer for all of God’s purposes & you will be ministering to one another as well, encouraging & uplifting each other as we are instructed to do in God’s Word. [Eph 1:11-14; 2:17-23; 3:14-21; Phil 1:

9-11; 2:1-11, 14]

If we be obedient to partake of this honor to come together in love, & thanksgiving to stand for others & God’s wants & desires we have so many promises from him. [Phil 4: 4-9, 13, 19]

Please pray about this opportunity to have a prayer buddy.  The Lord is wanting to set up a prayer network of prayer buddies in this fashion.  If you are interested, please email either myself at> wndnfire@juno.com or John at> JPi8@aol.com with the following information:

·        your first and last name    -email address

·        phone number    -the state in which you live John & I will merge the lists & pray over each person this week.  We will be the only ones to see your phone #s except the buddy the Lord directs us to match you with.  The two buddys pray and let the Lord direct you, your direction & scheduled times to call & pray.  The Lord has told John & I both that he would bless those who stepped out to be apart of God’s plan to move across this land forming this wall of prayer.  If you choose not to partake in the buddy prayer network, your prayers that God will have his way with this will be much appreciated. Matt 18:19-20 “ Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in Heaven.  For where two or three come together in my Name, there am I with them”.

Always, sandy

*SPOKANE, WA: STADIUM-SIZED DAY OF PRAYER

>From: Dan and Robby Grether <dgrether@soar.com>

The Spokane Youth Ministers Network is going to have a stadium-sized

worship-repentance day for youth here in Spokane Washington on September

16th. We believe the vision is God-given and that the Lord Jesus Christ will

come to meet with the youth at Joe Albi Stadium. We anticipate great

testimonies and mighty impact from this day with the Lord.  Thank you! Dan

Return---A Catalyst of the Youth

September 16, 2000---noon to nine---Joe Albi Stadium---Spokane, WA

www.missionspokane.org

It all began about a year ago when youth pastors in the Spokane area heard of a massive youth gathering on the Mall of Washington DC.  It is called The  CallDC.  The purpose of this gathering was to finish what Promise Keepers started on the 4th of October in 1997.  Promise Keepers speaks to the first half of Malachi 4:6: “he will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children.”  The CallDC speaks to the second half: “he will turn the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.”  Our first thought was why couldn’t we also do it here in Spokane.

Many leaders in the Church body today have foretold that The CallDC, the massive youth gathering in Washington DC, will be a catalyst to filling stadiums throughout the United States.  This is already beginning to happen.

From Coast to Coast.  From Washington to Washington.  Several youth pastors and leaders in the area have been meeting on a regular basis to pray and seek the Lord in response to that first prompting of the Holy Spirit.  God has laid it on the hearts of the youth pastors here in the Spokane area that He wants to draw 25,000 youth to Joe Albi Stadium on the 16th of September to seek His face through worship, praise, and prayer.  It is called “Return  a Catalyst of the Youth.”  This is not just another event, and it is not a concert.  It’s about transformation.  It’s a revolution.  What is a revolution?  It’s when people take personal responsibility for a cause they are willing to die for.  It is a call to our young people to Return to Jesus Christ with full passion and commitment and it is at the same time a cry to God, the Holy Spirit to Return to our churches and community and change us.

Return speaks to the nonbeliever: Return to God; to the prodigal: Return to the father; and to the Church: Return to Your First Love.

For the most part this generation is the first generation void of any Christian Heritage.  Their parents, the baby boomers, questioned authority and rebelled against the church and the establishment.  This is why youth are so hungry for spiritual things.  This generation is a worshiping generation.  Let’s have them worship Jesus Christ together.

Seven-fold purpose for Return:

1)   A calling of a Sacred Assembly of youth (Joel 2:12-17)

2)   Humbling and submitting ourselves before God through worship (II Chron. 7:14; James 4:7-10, Romans 12:1-2)

3)   Turning from our wicked ways through repentance to God (II Chron.

7:14; James 4:7-10)

4)   Seeking the Lord through prayer that we might know Christ more intimately (II Chron. 7:14; Isaiah 55:6-7, Phil. 3:10)

5)   Allowing God to turn the hearts of the youth back toward their spiritual and physical fathers (Malachi 4:6)

6)   Standing in the Gap for the youth of our country (Ezekiel 22:30-31)

7)   Returning to our First Love (Rev. 2:4-5)

We know that many great revivals in the past have begun with the youth.  We know that the youth are hungry for spiritual things.  We know that this generation is dying for a reason to live, and waiting to live for a reason for which they would be willing to die.  We know that this generation is also a worshiping generation.

Therefore, we believe God is leading youth all over the country to a time of prayer, fasting, repentance, and worship, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. We believe Return will be a catalyst of the youth to return their hearts to God, to their fathers, and to their first love, Jesus Christ.  This sacred assembly of youth is about God transforming our hearts, minds, churches, families, and schools.  It’s not a concert.  It’s not an event.  It’s about transformation.  It’s a revolution.  This is what Return is all about.

Prayers and Workers are needed for Return!

Final preparations are being made to provide for the 25,000 youth that will come to worship the Lord Jesus Christ at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane, Washington, USA from noon till nine, September 16, 2000. Christian adults in Spokane and the Inland Northwest are invited to offer themselves to serve the Lord in ministry as he meets with and transforms our youth.

Between now and September 16th, please “pull out all the stops” in praying for Return---A Catalyst of the Youth. Pray for the hearts of the youth to be prepared to meet the Lord. Pray that they will come to fill the stadium to overflowing. Pray that the Lord Jesus Christ will meet them there and do what only he can do for them. Pray for the task force of youth pastors and others who are working diligently on all the details. Pray that everything necessary to facilitate the worship will come together. Pray for the remaining finances to be released. Pray for workers for the harvest.  Prayerwalk outside Joe Albi Stadium, if possible, inviting the Lord to work among the assembled youth. Plan to pray on-site (in the prayer tent, among the youth or around the stadium) on the 16th.

On September 16th, there will be a 9:00 AM training meeting for the on-site workers needed during the day:

*PRAYING TOGETHER FOR OUR CHILDREN

>From: “Judy Parks” <jparks@txcyber.com>

The Lord has helped me develop a plan for our community to pray for all the schools in our community.  Our school administration began a “Character First” program to help the children learn good characteristics as a part of their curriculum.  I have taken their program and added a fruit of the Spirit with each highlighted character for each month and found scripture to match these subjects.  I compiled prayer cards and went to the pastors of my community and asked them to recruit people who would “Adopt-A-School” to go to the campus and pray these scriptures.  I also contacted the Home Schooler as well as the Day Care Centers.  We are now beginning our second year.  The testimony of our prayers making a difference have been great.

This is one way the community can come together in unity and pray for our children.  We may not agree on all things doctrinally but we can agree on the scriptures used in context.  It seems that we have a good representation among our churches.  We meet corporately one Saturday per month to pray for any special needs that the schools have.

*NATIONAL DAY OF STUDENT PRAYER

>From: Cornell Haan <CHaan@compuserve.com>

See You at the Pole Planned for September 20;

Nationwide Movement of Youth “Seeking God” Continues

Will this be the year that teenagers meet to pray at every secondary school?

A prayer meeting that started with just one youth group, meeting in the dark of night in Texas in 1990, has grown so dramatically that it may indeed impact 56,000 schools this year. Students in every state are expected to pray on their campuses, observing the 11th annual See You at the Pole-National Day of Student Prayer.  The event is scheduled before school on Wednesday, September 20.

Young people have been bowing in prayer at their school flagpoles around the world for 10 years as part of See You at the Pole, asking God to bring moral and spiritual awakening to their countries. The See You at the Pole 2000 theme is “A Generation Seeking God,” taken from the words of King David recorded in Psalm 24:3-6. The passage expresses a spiritual intensity similar to what many youth workers observe today in teenagers of the “Millennial Generation.”

Veteran church youth workers have noted that there is a greater fervency and seriousness in young people who seek intimacy with their Creator.  This is expressed in prolonged gatherings for worship and prayer, often in a spirit of repentance.  See You at the Pole (SYATP) gatherings frequently include heartfelt times of singing and passionate prayer.

Last year at SYATP, even the approach of Hurricane Floyd failed to dampen the spirits of students at Plant City, Florida, as six teenagers met to pray at their school, which was being used as an evacuation shelter from the huge storm.  And the next week, with no hurricane, 277 showed up!

See You at the Pole took on a more serious tone in Ft. Worth, Texas, in 1999 as a gunman opened fire on a crowd of teenagers at Wedgwood Baptist Church, killing seven people at a post-SYATP rally before taking his own life.  News of the tragedy spread rapidly, invoking prayer from youth at other rallies across the western half of the nation on behalf of those in Texas.  Once again, observers noted that teenagers “rose to the occasion” with a deeper commitment to pray.

See You at the Pole is a student-initiated and student-led movement that began in Burleson, Texas, in 1990, only a few miles from Wedgwood.  It grew to more than 3 million by 1998.  Youth in all 50 states and more than 20 countries on six continents participated last year.  Reports were sent in from Ghana, Bolivia, Philippines, Brunei, Guam, South Africa, Germany and Sweden.  Australian students rallied across their nation on May 11 this year, meeting from Sydney to the west coast.

The gathering of young people for prayer before school at their schools’ flagpoles is entirely legal, according to the U.S. Education Secretary Richard Riley.  In a letter Secretary Riley sent to school officials in August 1995, See You at the Pole is listed among those activities that are appropriate forms of religious expression by students on campus.

“Schools...must give students the same right to engage in religious activity and discussion as they have to engage in other comparable activity,” the letter stated. “This means that students may pray in a non-disruptive manner during the school day when they are not engaged in school activities and instruction, subject to the same rules of order as apply to other student speech.” The guidelines were drafted and endorsed by a broad range of civil liberties and religious groups, including both the American Civil Liberties Union and the Christian Legal Society.

Many church congregations show support for See You at the Pole by sponsoring special commissioning services September 16-17, the weekend before See You at the Pole.  In these services, they will recognize and pray for Christian students and educators.  A resource kit has been created by the National Network of Youth Ministries to help church leaders plan for this event.  The kit can be ordered by calling 1-888-ALLIANCE and asking for the “Challenge 2000 Sunday Toolkit.”

Promotional resources to help students plan and promote See You at the Pole are available by calling (817) HIS-PLAN between 9-5 (Central Time), Monday-Friday.  These include brochures, T-shirts, a promotional video, a CD with music and endorsements from Christian recording artists, posters, and other materials.
