1. PASTOR PHIL'S PRAYER LETTER

It is with praise to God and thanks to so many of you that we send this latest edition of the NPPN.  God is answering our prayers for abundant supply and many of you are encouraging us (Carol and me and the NPPN team) with your emessages; some are also offering financial support.  We are blessed and eager to walk this new path.

The first two weeks of our transition were spent in Southern California, house (and grandpuppy) sitting for our daughter and son-in-law.  We enjoyed both the relaxing and the connecting.

Lynn Heately of the Prayer Command Post graciously invited pastors and prayer leaders to meet with us and put us in touch with several prayer networkers.  The Prayer Command Post ministry generously sowed seed into our new ministry ~    TY!

Others who took time to meet with me:
Sharon and Paul Barnes; Sharon coordinates prayer for Women of Faith
David Andrade and Wolfgang Kovacek; hispowerportal.com
Chuck Girard; international praise and worship leader
  Gerald Sharon; Saddleback Community Church
Robert Bradley; PPG Leader, Ontario, CA
Plus, Pastor Perry Engle modeled the Pastor-Intercessor-Partnership well.

For those who are called to pray it forward on behalf of the NPPN, I promise (Sheila, my intercessor partner is jumping for joy) to provide a schedule of events and conferences (I've not been good at letting prayer partners know my preaching / teaching / facilitating schedule).

Thanking the Lord for you.
Let's recommit to pray, network, resource, communicate...
To the glory of our great God,

Pastor Phil

P.S. For those asking, financial support may be sent to NPPN, c/o Phil Miglioratti, 1130 Randville Drive, Palatine, IL  60074  (checks to: NPPN)

2. FRESH PRAYER
>From: FreshPrayer Notification <webmaster@waymakers.org

This month's issue of FreshPrayer is called "From futility to hope of new life," based on a few verses from 1 Peter 1. It's designed to help you and others pray with powerful hope for people to break free from the cycle of self-made goodness in order to enter a life of significance and holy beauty.  It's a different way, but a very biblical way, to pray for people who have yet to follow Christ.

It comes with a leader's guide to help you facilitate a small group prayer session, or a meeting of your "Lighthouse" prayer gathering.

FreshPrayer is free. All you need is the program Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is also free to download without hassle anytime.

Go to http://www.waymakers.org and click on the "Fresh Prayer" section to download this month's issue.

Yours for Christ's greater glory, Steve Hawthorne

3. WHY WE NEED MORE SERMONS ON PRAYER...
>From: Newsletter@LeadershipJournal.net
>At:  http://www.LeadershipJournal.net/
>By:  guest columnist Craig Brian Larson

I went to the home of a woman who attended the church I pastored.  When I walked into the flat, her husband was asleep on a cot in the living room, a gaunt shell of a man, his substance sucked out by whiskey. His skin was yellow. When he awoke and we met, his voice was rumbly and harsh from smoking, and frighteningly loud.  His eyes had something hateful about them that made my blood run cold.

This was the demanding, abusive man whom the woman in our church tried to placate day after day. She had told me chilling stories about him.

They lived on welfare, and their house had poverty written all over it. In the dirt "yard" sat an abandoned tire. The kitchen floor sloped steeply, and the gloomy walls needed paint. In the living room, the fabric on the arms of the chairs was worn through, a chair or two tilted due to a missing leg, the cushions gave no support. Mousetraps were everywhere.  Dimly lighting the place were bulbs that could not have added more than 40 watts apiece.

But each week something happened in the life of this woman that elevated her to a higher, brighter plane. She would come to church and hear a sermon. That sermon was nothing less than a condensed dose of dignity that saved and ennobled her battered spirit. I saw the tears of gratitude as she grabbed my hand before she left for home.

No matter what our station, daily life in a fallen world is a walk through a gauntlet of belittlement. Those who attend our churches are bombarded daily by false values and beliefs that cheapen God's creation, by personal slights and insults, and by Satan's accusations. Their minds are assaulted by scabrous images in the media and by profanity that is objectionable to God precisely because it debases the creation. They are subject to sins that mar God's image within them. They suffer distorted self images that contradict God's truth.

After such a week, it's a wonder that a person can walk into church with any sense of worth (and the faces of many confirm that).

But then they hear anointed preaching, and gravity reverses as people sense the upward pull of heaven. The sermon reveals God's character, who infuses all life with meaning and majesty. The sermon tells who we are in God's sight: created in the divine image, beloved beyond description, destined for glory. The sermon uncovers sins -- then announces how to be redeemed. The sermon honors the morality that exalts humankind. The sermon assumes that people can think and discern about life and the Book of Life. The sermon appeals to the will, treating people as
responsible agents whose choices matter forever. The sermon preaches Christ Immanuel, forever hallowing human flesh, second Adam who will one day resurrect believers in his likeness. A sermon is the most intense dose of dignity any person can receive.

To sit through a quality sermon is something like ascending the Mount of Transfiguration. Prior to that moment, Jesus resembled any other man. He looked, dressed, and groomed himself like a common man. But on the Mount of Transfiguration, his appearance changed to display his full divine nature. The glory of God radiated forth, his face blazing like the sun and his clothes becoming heavenly white. The curtain was pulled back, revealing reality.

During a sermon, we are in a sense transfigured. Our true dignity from God shines forth. Nothing else in life treats a man or woman in a way that assumes greater worth or higher powers.

There is no more costly gift I could have given that downtrodden woman than my best, and God's best, in a sermon. It is a weekly dose of compressed dignity.

4. DOES PRAYER MEAN YOU'RE SOFT?
> From: "Crosswalk.com" <newssummary@lists.crosswalk.com>

Jeff Van Gundy, the New York Knicks coach, griped that the two worst things happening to the modern NBA are golf and God.  "Hugging and praying with opponents are not at the top of my list" - prayer turns pros soft. The reply to that is from Jeffery Hurd who had four years with the Dallas Cowboys.  "I tried to knock people so hard that they couldn't get up ... Because I was a Christian, the other team thought I was supposed to be soft. Prayer is nothing but strength."

David Smaile, a representative of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, said, "God wants us to use that strength - even in sports ..."  He names the New Testament as proof:  1 Corinthians 9:24-25, where the Apostle Paul told believers to "run in such a way as to get the prize."

Chaplains like Mike Lusardi said that guys with faith find that prayer brings peace to their lives and  maximizes their abilities that God has given them."

5. "WHAT SHOULD I PRAY ABOUT?"
>By: Janet Holm McHenry

Discipleship Journal  - Issue 123, May/June 2001

To answer this question, I studied the prayers Jesus prayed. Scripture records 10 of these. His prayers help open our eyes to how we can pray as well.
Begin with praise. Christ began the Lord's prayer with words of praise: "Father, hallowed be your name" (Lk. 11:2). He calls the Father "holy" and "righteous" (Jn. 17:11,25)--simple, perfect praise.
It's easy to give praise when things are going our way, but it's also important to praise God when life isn't working out. While the 12 apostles were headed off on their first mission, Jesus continued His Galilean ministry. Even though cities did not repent after seeing His miracles, He gave praise:

"I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father; for this was your good pleasure." Mt. 11:25-26

I begin my walk with, "Good morning, Lord!" OK, some mornings I'm not that perky, and there may be a few groans as my joints protest. But then I move into a time of praise for who God is, for what He has done, for whatever will happen that day. My praise often takes the form of Scripture or a hummed hymn or praise chorus. I don't sing out loud very often--remember, it's below freezing most of the mornings I walk. When you're walking at an aerobic pace, you can't sing. But I am sure God knows the praises that are welling up and spilling over from my racing heart.
Thank God. Jesus prayed, "Father I thank you that you have heard me" (Jn 11:41). God's provision for us in so many ways can inspire our thanks.
Offer forgiveness as needed. On the cross Christ prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" (Lk.23:34). This is an important prayer for our lives as well. It will flush out our anger, hatred, and bitterness. Balanced with that, I also ask God to search my heart for the repentance that I need to do.
Lament. The Psalms are full of laments, and we have one from Christ also: "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which means "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Mt. 27:46). God knows when we feel alone. He knows when our hearts are breaking, so why not just pray it all out? I give over to Him my tears and hurts, questions and disappointments.
Intercede for yourself and others. Christ prayed for Himself. In John 17, Jesus asks the Father to "glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began" (v.5)
I often feel like weeping when I read Christ's chapter-long prayer in John 17, because it is for me. Twenty-one of the 26 verses were uttered on behalf of His disciples and other believers. He prayed for their protection, sanctification, and for their experience of joy and God's love. I was so moved and inspired by the knowledge that Christ had prayed for me in this prayer that I now pray for the future of my town. I pray not only for those who live here but also for those who will live here.
Like Christ, you and I can pray for protection for those driving and working at hazardous jobs, and for faith or deepened faith for all who pass by. You or I may be the only person who really sees the needs of that mother pushing her cranky toddler or who notices that the deliveryman looks especially tired. Ask God to give  you His eyes as you prayerwalk.
Ask for God's will. Both in Gethsemane and on the cross, Jesus prayed for the Father's will. The main character in Jan Karon's Mitford novels, Father Tim, says the Gethsemane prayer is the prayer that never fails: "Yet not as I will, but as you will" (Mt. 26:39). That is how I often pray when I don't know what God wants.

6. WHAT IS A "HOUSE OF PRAYER" -?
>From: Judy Bowers <LLVPrayer@aol.com>

What is a House of Prayer?

God has given us in His Word the standard for His church. Jesus spoke these words in Matthew 21:13:  "My House shall be called a House of Prayer."

Because of our love for our Lord, we have a deep desire to be obedient to His every command. But how do we know when we have become a House of Prayer?

Here are a few characteristics we can use as an assessment tool:

The entire congregation is involved and takes ownership for doing their prayer share.

All leaders, staff, and lay persons have a burden for prayer.

Groups spend time praying together and schedule times of prayer in addition to regular church meetings.

Prayer classes and special prayer events are scheduled on a regular basis.

The pastor places priority on prayer.

There is a fresh flowing atmosphere of the Holy Spirit due to the whole church praying.

There is a fresh flowing atmosphere of the Holy Spirit due to the whole church praying.

There is a designated prayer room or place to minister in prayer.

Emergency prayer chains are in place and a mobilization plan implemented.

The results of being a church devoted to prayer:

All things are initiated, planned, and accomplished through prayer!

When a special time of prayer is announced, the whole church shows up!

When it is challenged by financial shortfall, the church calls for fasting, prayer, and faith!

The church will do things beyond its means, see the world as its parish, and will be involved in the work of God!

A House of prayer will mount up with wings of eagles, run and not grow weary, walk and not be faint.

Prayer Goal --
As a result of exalting Jesus Christ through fervent prayer, the unity of the Body of Christ, and an extraordinary movement of God's Holy Spirit, we will seek to saturate all aspects of the local church, the local community, and act as the propelling catalyst of transforming Las Vegas and Southern Nevada.

8. THE CRY OF SIN IS LOUDER THAN THE CRY OF INTERCESSION
>From: Jim Herrington <jhmh@swbell.net>
Friends:
This is a personal confession so if you don't want personal  -  trash this.
Three years ago I left Union Baptist Association to follow God's leadership with Mission Houston.  I believed that cities could be transformed if enough pastors and congregations became desperate to pray and seek God's face.  My commitment was to be a servant to the pastors and churches in the city - calling them to prayer, serving them as they gathered to pray.

Today in a city-wide pastors prayer gathering Ugandan Pastor Jackson Senjonga shared his first-hand story of the transformation of his homeland. His stories were compelling and they were intensified by Jackson's personal humility.  He affirmed everything that we know about transformation.  No new information!  Yet, in the midst of his presentation he said:  "In America, the cry of sin is louder than the cry of intercession."  And God pierced my heart.

You see, I'm praying more than I've every prayed.  But - I'm not desperate. Somewhere along the way the calling became a job - about raising money - about networking with pastors - managing the trappings of our "success." Yes, I was praying, but not as if the life of the city depended on it. Pastor Senjonga reminded me that there are many good things we can do.  And together we can do more than we can do alone.  But, our city is a sin-sick place - deceived by its materialism, drowning in its pride, awash in a raging torrent of things that displease my Heavenly Father.  And my own personal prayer life has been like shooting a water pistol at a raging wild-fire.

At the close of the prayer gathering today those gathered were struck by a deep sense of urgency to gather other pastors to hear this simple but compelling story.  We prevailed on Pastor Senjonga to stay over another day to see if we could gather pastors and intercessors from across the city Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. (for more info see
http://www.missionhouston.org.  I fear that the pastors of the city are more like me than different.  We are all concerned, but we are not desperate.

Would you pray for a God given sense of desperation?  Would you join me in fasting on Tuesday for the pastors of the city?  At the top of each hour would you take a "holy pause" and ask God to draw pastors and intercessors to Grace Community Church tomorrow night to hear pastor Senjonga's story?

I repent of the condition of my prayer life and with God's help will do what I can not do on my own.  JTH

TWO DAYS LATER...

> From: Jim Herrington <jhmh@swbell.net>
Praying Friends:
Last night approximately 1500 people (a standing room only crowd) gathered at Grace Community Church. It was a large representation of the body of Christ from across the city with one of the largest gathering of pastors that we've experienced in recent days.  We worshipped together.  We heard a testimony from Jackson Senjonga - a leading pastor in the transformation of Uganda.  We interceded for our city.  For me personally - it was a powerful night that stretched me to some new places and reminded me that fervent, focused prayer is at the heart of every contemporary transformation story that we know.

Those of us who are seeking to foster the functional emergence of the city church believe we should build on the momentum of last night.  There are some details yet to be worked out, but for now I've been asked to communicate to everyone on this distribution list that we will gather again for a night of united intercession on July 23, 2001.  The time will be 7:00 pm and the location is yet to be decided.  If you have an email list of praying people, please forward this and future messages to them.  Blessings!  Jim Herrington

9. PASTOR GETS STANDING OVATION FROM CONGREGATION
>From:  <RiverofLifeMailer@InChristsImage.org>
>By:  Pastor Francis Frangipane

In the early 1970s, during the beginning of my ministry, the Lord called me to consecrate to Him the time from dawn until noon. I spent these hours in prayer, worship, and the study of His Word. I would often worship God for hours, writing songs to Him that came from this wonderful sanctuary of love. The Presence of the Lord was my delight, and I know my time with Him was not only well-spent but well-pleasing to us both.

However, as my life began to bear the fruit of Christ's influence, the Holy Spirit would bring people to me for ministry. In time, as more people would come, I found myself cutting off forty-five minutes from the end of my devotional time. On occasion, ministry to people would extend into the night, and I stopped rising as early as I had.

Church growth problems began to eat at the quality of my remaining time; ministerial expansion, training younger ministries, and more counseling and deliverance crowded the already limited time I had left. Of course, these changes did not happen overnight, but the months and years of increasing success were steadily eroding my devotional life. In time I found myself in a growing ministry but with a shrinking anointing to sustain it.

One day an intercessor called who prayed regularly for me. He told me that during the night the Lord spoke to him in a dream concerning me. I was eager to hear what the Lord had revealed to my friend, thinking perhaps He was going to increase our outreach or maybe supply some needed finances. I asked Him to tell me the dream.

What the Lord said had nothing directly to do with the projects and priorities that were consuming my time. He simply said, "Tell Francis I miss him."

Oh, what burdens we carry -- what weariness accumulates -- when we neglect the privilege of daily spending time with Jesus. I cried as I repented before the Lord, and I readjusted my priorities. No longer would I counsel people in the mornings. I would spend this time again with God.

Yet, I thought I might lose some of the people who had recently joined the church. These were people who had come specifically for personal ministry. I knew I would not have the same time for them as before, but I had to make my decision for God.

The next Sunday morning I announced to the congregation that my mornings were off limits, consecrated to God. "Please," I said, "no calls or counseling. I need to spend time with Christ." What happened next shocked me. The entire church rose and applauded! They wanted a leader who spent more time with God! They were tired of a tired pastor.

"Lord Jesus, forgive us for being so easily distracted. Deliver us from the bondage of the physical world; liberate us to enjoy the powers of the spiritual world. Intoxicate us with Your presence. Make us God-addicts, who cannot go through our day without more of You in our lives."

11. NEW ENGLAND: THE CALL TO FAST FOR THE CALL
>From: NECPrayer@cs.com

September 22, 2001, is the Call New England in Boston.  Lou Engle has asked for a 21 day fast preceding the Call.  He spoke of massive prayer and fasting in preparation for the event.  I have been asked to be one of the prayer coordinators of the Call and strongly agree with preparing our hearts, through prayer and fasting, for this event.  I realize that summer we all need rest and vacation but I think this is a critical time for New England and the nation.  It struck me especially when we were in Stowe, VT on the prayer journey.

I have been hearing the words War Cry this summer and envisioning troops being summoned for battle in the heavenliness.  My request to you is to pray about this word and if you should set aside a period this summer for fasting and prayer for revival.  God Bless you all and I look forward to being in touch with you.

In His Love, Jeff Marks

Update - - - The Call New England is getting closer.  Last year it mobilized hundreds of thousands of parents and youth to fast and pray.  Lets help get the numbers higher this year.

12. PRAYERWALK MINNESOTA
>From: Prayer Transformation Ministries <mailto:PTM@prayertransformation.com>
>At:  http://www.prayertransformation.com/

Crusade America, in cooperation with churches and prayer ministries throughout the state, is sending forth a call for believers in Minnesota to join in a statewide prayer walk, and to gather for four days of prayer and seeking God for revival.

The Mission
This is a time to unite, not around a political or social cause, but around the cause of Christ in Minnesota. It is a time to cry out for revival. It is a time to seek healing for divisions within the Church. It is a time to call for a fresh wind of Godıs Spirit to blow across the state that will bring true life to the Body of Christ and usher in a mighty harvest for Godıs glory.

Four Days of Seeking God
On Thursday, August 16, a ³tent of meeting² will be open in Brainerd that will be the site of 24-hour prayer and worship for all four days. Everyone is encouraged to join us whenever they can during this time.

Each evening at 7:00pm there will be a special time of worship and ministry. On Saturday night a Prayer Rally will be held following the statewide prayer walk. This will be a time for the Church of Minnesota to gather and honor the Lord and lift Him up as King of Kings over this land. Pastor John Halvorsen will minister.

John has a heart for revival in America and has been called by God to reach this nation. He recently completed a 5,000 mile prayer walk across the ³length and width² of this country (according to Genesis 13:17), walking from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico, and from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean. John feels he has been given a word for this hour and believes God wants to touch the lives of everyone who comes.

Statewide Prayerwalk
On Saturday, August 18, a prayer walk will be held that will connect the entire state of Minnesota in a single day. Beginning at 8:00am, Christians from around the state and from all different backgrounds will walk different segments of the route and create a ³prayer cross² over Minnesota. With each step they take they will be claiming the state of Minnesota for Christ.

Walking from the north, south, east and west, and moving toward the heart of the state (Brainerd), a united voice will arise, calling for the wind of the Spirit to bring the breath of life to His Church, according to the pattern in Ezekiel 37:9-10. For just as Ezekiel saw God give life to ³an exceedingly great army,² so we shall see God raise up an army of believers in Minnesota that will be equipped to bring His life to a lost and dying world.

How To Get Involved
This is a call to the entire Body of Christ in Minnesota, and you can play an important role in four ways.
  1. Begin now to pray for this work and for your state. It is only through the prayers of His saints that we can accomplish Godıs will here on earth.
  2. Plan to join the walk. Whether itıs you, your church, your prayer group, or group of friends, we encourage you to take part in a walk that will touch (and impact) the entire state.
  3. Gather at the tent in Brainerd. Where two or more are gathered, God has promised to be present in our midst. Come to seek Him. Come for an impartation of His love and power. Come to pray at the heart of the state.
  4. Tell someone today. A key to the success of this initiative is to reach as many believers as possible. Together, we can see a mighty move of God sweep through your community, your state, and all of America.

The Time Is Short
There is an urgency to the hour. Not just because there is a short time before this work begins, but because we truly believe God is ready to begin a powerful move across this land. The harvest is ripe in Minnesota and throughout America. He is seeking those who would answer His call to rise up and move beyond the four walls of a building to bring the light of His presence to those who are lost.

Are you hungry for more of God? Does your heart beat with the compassion of Jesus? Are you ready to follow His call? The time to come together is here. The time for the Church of Minnesota is now!

13.  REVIVAL?  JUST GO TO CHURCH THIS SUNDAY
>From: Ministries Today charisma@strang.com
>By: Ted Haggard

"Too often, we think we know what revival is supposed to look like. But to assume that the 21st-century revival might look like the 19th- or 20th-century revivals might cause us to miss the miracle.
"Our mental image of revival has to broaden to include life-giving churches that are steadily growing through conversion and making a lasting impact on their communities.
"Revival is here, in good local churches with competent pastors and people coming every week to pray, rejoice, repent and recommit to Christ. This kind of revival will stay and bear fruit for years to come.
"Simply put, we don't need to drive across the country to find revival. We just need to go to church this Sunday."

14. HOLY LAND NEEDS PRAYING PASTORS
>From: MartyCohen@MessianicMessages.com
>Through:  NPPN Comment Form

Shalom.
I lead Messianic Messages, a Messianic Jewish teaching ministry headquartered in Texas.  I serve on the Board of Pray Texas and have been involved in the NDP in Dallas for the past six years.  (This year I missed because I was in Israel).  In fact, I now live in Israel.

We are sponsoring a special Prayer Gathering of pastors IN the Whole Holy Land on December 1-9, 2001.  This is a very special opportunity for pastors to gather in the land of the Bible for prayer and more.

For details, please visit http://www.2israel.org/Planned_Tours/FAM.htm.
There are only 20 spaces available and at $799, they won't last long.  Because of my involvement in the prayer ministry for so long, I am especially interested in gathering "Praying Pastors" to come to the land in these troubled times.  Come to Israel, we need you now more than ever!
Thank you, Marty Cohen

15. "TRAVAILING PREVAILING" PRAYER
>From: "Bob Tolliver" <lifeunlimited@myexcel.com>

Each time Jo Ann and I travel to eastern Europe there is usually a central theme that God puts in my heart to share with the people.  This trip it is the necessity of prayer.  I talked about that some last week.  I need to continue that today.

"Travailing Prevailing" as I called it last week is the kind of praying that makes you cry out to God in intercessory desperation for His glory to be revealed and His purposes to be fulfilled.  In sharing that message here in the Balkans several things have become evident to me.

1.  The spiritual bondage found in this place is the result of a complex mix of conditions, events, and attitudes.  That is why I'm convinced there will never be a political or military solution that will work here.  There are too many memories, too many wounds, too many nations that have trampled this place under their boots of war, too many religions that have forced themselves into ethnic identity.

While virtually every person we have ever met here, whether Croat, Serb, or Bosnian, has been gracious and kind in every way, the animosity and hatred found in the hearts of many people is beyond description.  You will neither legislate nor bomb those attitudes away, nor will you change them through political rhetoric or manipulation.  You will never bring peace to this part of the world through partitioning the land or trying to create a blended government system of all the factions.

2.  Because it is primarily a spiritual bondage that exists, only a spiritual answer will set the captives free.  It is clear that the demonic powers of hell have taken advantage of every opportunity over the past eighteen centuries to strengthen their foothold and deepen their entrenchment into the fiber of this society.  For every societal problem that exists on the surface, there are hidden issues in the heart and demonic controls in the heavenlies that continue to try to stir things up.

These wicked emissaries of Satan himself are constantly on the prowl to initiate new elements of distrust and hatred into the system and also to implant evil and wicket thoughts into the hearts and minds of new players on the field.  I talked today with Stevo Dereta, president of the Life Center International where we are working, and he said something I had been thinking.  Every level of society in this region of the world is wicked and corrupt ---- including the church, even in many ways the evangelical church.

His statement reminded me of comments in one of my more recent letters based on Ezekiel 22 where the prophets, the priests, the princes, and the people all were filled with corruption and self-serving advancements.  I was happy to hear that things are rapidly changing, however, at least in the church.  Yet there is still competitiveness, petty jealousy, distrust, and resentment between various church groups.

Nothing will break this bondage outside of a spiritual invasion of Heaven's armies undergirded by God's warriors in the Church.  Everything else that is tried, including humanitarian assistance and Christian based plans will ultimately fail.

3.  Many believers in this region of the world have again become comfortable with the seeming futility of the current status.  History has repeated itself so often that in many hearts hope is waning.  The have concluded that faith is futile.  Others have moved from the position of faith to fatalism.  The pastors here are overworked and often paid little or nothing.  They are, as one told me several years ago, "too busy to pray together", and yet that is the absolute necessity that can turn things around.

This past week my mind has been plagued with a major question.  "Lord, do the believers here love their cities and their countries as intensely as I do?"  That's not an ego type of question.  I just don't know.  In talking with Stevo earlier today I shared that question with him.  He immediately acknowledged that many believers were more interested in their own personal needs than they were the condition of their cities and their country.

4.  If things are going to change in this region of the world, the Christian leaders of the various denominations and other groups are going to have to come together in unity.  It's amazing how much like the western church these believers have become.  They have learned well from us, tragically.  Everywhere I've preached these past weeks, I have urged them to seek the face of God, cry out to Him, and come together in unity to ask for His benevolent mercy and divine intervention.

5.  If things are going to change here, believers here must continue to look outside their own area for resources and help.  When you realize that this current generation is the first one in many years to be free from the oppression and atheism of their Communist government, it will suddenly dawn on you that they have no solid infrastructure of spiritual vitality and institutions.  What few denominational organizations exist are very small, poorly managed, and financially strapped.

Stevo shared with me earlier today his vision to begin raising up a system that will ultimately generate Christian journalists, film producers, writers, actors, technicians, and the like who will begin to infiltrate into the secular still "communistic" media and begin to influence it to the point that Christians become a force in this society.  A young woman, Dali, whom we have known since she became a believer in her teen years, wants to finish her Bible college training and then go to America for one year to study Christian theater and drama because she feels God is calling her out to train believers throughout the Balkan region how to communicate the Gospel through drama, mime, music, and theater.  She can't get there without help from outside.

There is no money available to hold training seminars and conference to equip pastors and other church leaders.  Every trip Jo Ann and I take is at our expense.  It isn't that these people don't want to assume financial responsibility ---- they can't assume it; there is no money.  When you consider that six years ago there were less than 4,000 believers in all of Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia, it should come as no surprise to us.  Even though that number has risen greatly in recent years, the church here is still small, weak, and unable to help.  It is still the "Macedonian" church needing help from some "Jerusalem" and "Philippian" believers.

The Ultimate Answer:

This brings me to the final question:  "What is the answer?"

Well, it's obvious.

For both the local believers here and the church around the world, the answer is the same ---- Prevailing Prayer.

But, it must also be unhindered prayer.  We're not talking about religious games; we're not considering convenient Christianity.

We're looking at the need for prayer that comes from broken hearts of desperation crying unashamedly out to a sovereign and limitless all powerful God to intervene for a part of the world that has been invaded by outside forces more than any other spot on the planet.

I want to call you to such prayer.  I want to stir you so much for these people that you can't sleep tonight.  I want to prod you and even badger you to examine your own prayer life and that of your church.  Do you really love what God loves?  Do you see what He sees over here?  Do you feel what He feels for these people?

I'm not asking you to come here to minister.  I'm just asking you to pray . . . . to pray with all your heart for these people.  For both the unbelievers and the believers alike.  Pray that the blinders will be stripped from the eyes of the unbelieving.  Pray that the fear and weariness will be lifted from the shoulders of the believers.

But, if you choose to join me in such praying, be sure it is unhindered praying.

What Hinders Our Prayers:

The Bible shows us many things that hinder our prayers.  Let me name some:

1.  If I reject the truth.  Prov 28:9 ---- "If anyone turns a deaf ear to the law, even his prayers are detestable."

2.  If I have pride.  II Chron 7:14 ---- "If my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves . . . . then I will hear . . ."

3.  If my heart is hardened by things of the world.  Zechsariah 7:12-13 ---- "They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by His Spirit through the earlier prophets.  So the Lord Almighty was very angry.  'When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen', says the Lord."

4.  If I lack compassion.  Prov 21:13 ---- "If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered."

5.  If I have unconfessed sin.  Psalm 66:18 ---- "If I have sin in my heart, the Lord will not hear me."

6.  If I have wrong motives.  James 4:3 ---- "When you ask, you do not receives, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures."

7.  If I have broken relationships.  I Peter 3:7 ---- "Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

8.  If my lifestyle is sinful.  Isaiah 59:2 ---- "But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden His face from you so that He will not hear."

9.  If my prayers are empty words.  Matthew 6:7 ---- "And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words."

10.  If I refuse forgiveness.  Matthew 6:14 ---- "For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive them their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."

11.  If I am hypocritical.  Luke 18:9 ---- (the story of the publican and the sinner)

12.  If I am double minded, two-faced.  James 1:5 ---- "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.  But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.  That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is double minded, unstable in all he does."

In Conclusion:

Will you join me as my prayer partner for the Balkan region?  The area is again on the verge of erupting into war again in Macedonia.  It's the same old song, same old verse.  Just different singers.

If God's people do not cry out to Him in intercession, who will?  Do you think the pagans will?  Do you think Satan will?

If not us, who?  If not now, when?

16.  THE COST OF PRAYING
>From: "Frank Moseley" <fwm@soshelp.com>

There are so many prayer groups & so many denominations & Christian Organizations perhaps now is the time to take another ³look: at Calvary & have a real reliance on the Holy Spirit. Let all prayer warriors ask God to grant that we may learn to allow the Holy Spirit to ³introduce² through the agony of our intercession, the Living Christ.

How many of us are willing to allow Jesus Christ to tramp on our lives on His way to another sick soul? Do we know anything about giving one costly drop of blood for intercession? There are no lasting results in answer to prayer, unless that prayer costs somebody something. My ref. here is Heb.12:4  When we discover a sin-sick soul , do we cry awhile & then go home & sleep? Instead take that soul to the Savior Of Salvation  & intercede, by reliance on the Spirit of God until that darkened, difficult life ³receives² Jesus (Jo.1:12)

Prayer warriors should see Calvary as a Battlefield, an Altar, a Meeting place, a Pulpit & a Judgment. Before we pray let us all look at the 3 Crosses again of:

The Cross of Redemption (dying for sin) Rebellion (in sin) & Redemption (dying to sin).

Everyone is crucified on one of these 3 crosses. The cross of Selfishness, Surrender of Self, or Self Sacrifice.

Calvary is a place of Pain of Pardon & a place of Promise. Have we felt the Pain, received the Pardon & the Promise? If so maybe, just maybe our prayers will comfort  some of the ³loneliness² of Jesus.

Going to Calvary & then listening as the Holy Spirit speaks @ Pentecost  should make us better Prayer Warriors.

Stay well   Frank   913 432 SOS(2767)       <http://www.soshelp.com/>

17.  PRAYERBIKING THROUGH NAVAJO COUNTRY
>From: Frank Piszczor <fphp90@juno.com>

In August, with three other church members, I am planning to go back to the Navajo Reservation in Arizona and New Mexico. For three days, we will be riding our bikes through the Reservation and praying for the Navajo at the same time.

Our hope is to establish a committed relationship with the mission organization, because we would like to return to the same spot and with the same group of people year after year. Personally, I would like to make a "lifetime" commitment to ministering to the Navajo. We know we do not know a lot about the Navajo, so this is an exploratory trip for us.
>From what I understand from talking with a few Navajo Christians, it is very hard for Navajo pastors to get a Bible education because of their financial situation. Also, when a Navajo pastor returns to the Reservation after years of absence, he is often out of step with the Reservation and Reservation life. So, one day, God willing, I would like
to participate in helping develop a Bible college and a seminary on the Reservation.

Our plan for this trip is to pray and ride our bikes during the day. We are expecting to ride around 75 miles a day as long as it does not rain on us. Although we are not riding through the mountains, I am sure the journey will still be difficult. While we are riding through the Reservation, we will be praying for the special needs of the Navajo. I realize this is not so easy. The Navajo are not very "open" to the "white man's" religion, because Christianity has played a major role in tearing apart their culture. We will be praying for God to move in a fresh way throughout the Reservation. Our plan will be to pray through the Psalm 23, the Lord's Prayer and the Armor of God with the faith to see God pour out His Spirit and break down strongholds.

With all of this in mind, please pray for me and the rest of our team.  There will be four of us from my church and three people from the mission. Specifically, could you pray for:
-Our physical safety. We will be facing the heat of New Mexico and Arizona in addition to the usual dangers of riding a bike (sun burn, heat exhaustion, flat tires, pot holes and other accidents).
-Our spiritual safety. We may not be dealing with a lot of people, but we will be dealing with social issues, mental issues and spiritual warfare. We feel this can be an even greater danger.
-Our team unity. Since there will be two groups of people with different perspectives and experiences, pray that we will arrive and ride with a servant's attitude.
-Our future ministry. As I have already mentioned, we would like to return many times over. So, we are asking God for wisdom and direction in deciding for the future of this ministry.
Our fruitful experience. Jesus once said, "I am the Vine and you are the branches. He who abides in Me and I in him bears much fruit. For apart from Me you can do nothing." (John 15:15) If you could pray His Words into our lives and our ministry, we would really appreciate it. We know that if God does not do something in and through us, our time will be futile.
My family. I know that I will miss them greatly, and I am guessing that they might miss me as well. Even though school is out, it is not easy to take care of four children (no, we did not have a fourth ... my wife watches my niece four days a week!)

Thank you!  Frank

19.  GOD AT WORK ... AMONG WOMEN OF FAITH
>From: Sharon Ann Barnes <sbarnes@women-of-faith.com>

--->NPPNote: While I was in Southern California in early July, I had the privilege of meeting Sharon and Paul Barnes.  Sharon coordinates prayer for Women of Faith. As a result of our conversation, I hope the NPPN can partner with her team in mobilizing more prayer for their stadium events ... so that ... the host city prayer networks can be strengthened and extended!

South Florida relished in its "first-time" moments at the Women of Faith Boundless Love 2001 Conference this last weekend! 10,000 women gathered together in Ft. Lauderdale for its "very first Women of Faith Conference"!  What a delight for them to have Friday night open with the founder of Women of Faith, Steve Arterburn, telling his story about the "God of Second Chances" for the "first time" at one of the conferences.

May you be enriched as you read the response of a pastor's wife.....
"Thanks for bringing Women of Faith to South Florida!  I am the wife of a church planting pastor.  This was not only a great event to bring our women to, but a time of real refreshing and blessing for me!  God bless you all as you continue to minister to the women across our nation this year.

Celebrate with us in praise to God for:
*    586 women who responded at the conference and said, "Yes!" to wanting to know God in a personal way!
*    86 women who made first time decisions to know God in a personal way at the Friday Intensive.
*    16 families and 569 children who were sponsored through our partners, World Vision, by women seeking to make a difference in their world by giving others in impoverished regions hope for the future!
*    75 women who prayed in the prayer room throughout the conference representing many different churches and the following ministries in the South Florida area:  Moms In Touch, Community Bible Studies, Campus Crusade, CareNet Ministries, Miami City Team, Jews for Jesus, Women of the Way, Center for Reclaiming America, Coral Ridge Ministries, and Open Doors Ministry.

So thank GOD for his marvelous love,
For his miracle mercy to the children he loves!  Psalm 107: 8  (The MESSAGE)

20.   ST. PAUL: PRAYER FOR THE HOUSE OF PRAYER
>From: "Prayer Transformation Ministries" <PTM@prayertransformation.com>

The St. Paul House of Prayer is a house on Prospect Ave. on the bluff overlooking St. Paul. The St. Paul House of Prayer is committed to the restoration of Pastors and leaders with 24-hour prayer and intercession going on simultaneously. This worship and intercession is a vital catalyst to the opening of the heavens and of Pastors being healed. The St. Paul House of Prayer has come upon some very serious financial hurdles and are unable to make payments on the house. The ministry WILL continue regardless of the location. They are seeking the Lord for a buyer for the house that will be a believer who will keep the house in the Kingdom of God. Please  pray for the St. Paul House of Prayer, and God's Hand upon this situation.

"Heavenly Father, on behalf of your Church in St. Paul, we claim the House of Prayer in St. Paul at 58 Prospect Blvd as belonging to the Kingdom of God. Lord, wealth and riches belong to You, so we pray that you would provide a buyer from Your Kingdom to purchase that house and believers to unite in prayer for that land, prayerwalking that bluff, that the spirit of witchcraft and control would be broken over that land and that the One True God would be worshiped."

In the Name of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
The St. Paul House of Prayer Board.

------------------------------
Dear Friends,
God has used the Transformations II video in a mighty way these last few weeks.  In the Twin Cities, this video and its introductory clip have been shown several times with an amazing result of spreading vision for God's transformational work in cities.  This second video by the Sentinel Group focuses on the role of prayer and is a strong encouragement to continue to call forth strong citywide prayer movements in our cities.

Of course, these prayer movements need leadership and often these prayer leaders need encouragement themselves to keep praying until the answer comes.  It was for this reason that several citywide prayer leaders began
meeting by phone to begin an annual citywide prayer leaders consultation. The first one was held in Minneapolis last August and the second will be held in Dallas August 26-28 later this summer.

This consultation is for prayer leaders who have a vision and influence for the whole city and for city reachers who see prayer as a primary focus in their own ministry.  If you fit this category we welcome you to join us in Dallas.  If not, perhaps you can pass this information on to a prayer leader in your city.

Consultation Purposes:
1. To strengthen and encourage citywide prayer leaders through personal prayer ministry.
2. To expand the networking potential of the citywide prayer movement.
3. To multiply the number of citywide prayer leaders especially among non-Anglo groups.
4. To learn from each other in sharing and instructional sessions
5. To bless the host city through on-site prayer and prayer walking.

To register or for more information, please call 612-278-1717

Thank you for praying about this opportunity.
