*A PRAYER TO HELP OUR PRAYERS

“We have trivialized the grandeur of meeting you, as if approaching you was a matter of routine spiritual hygiene.  To our shame, we’ve become proud of how well we have mastered the rituals.  We’ve made worship predictable and safe.  So we’ve come to you heartless and high minded, as bored as we are proud.  Break through our pride.  Gather up our wayward hearts and ravish us with wonder.  Astonish us so greatly in your presence.  Surprise us with your supremacy.  Stun us with how dangerous you are.  Bear down upon us so brilliantly that the cloud of our clever religious pride will evaporate in the radiance of your glory.”

“Seek God for the City” Author Steve Hawthorne

*PRAYER WEEK: AIDS EPIDEMIC’ IN BLACK CHURCHES >From: newsupdate@charismanews.com Special prayer services in many African American churches across the United States on Saturday will mark the end of the Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS. The annual focus is organized by Balm in Gilead, a New York-based AIDS advocacy group.

Services and educational programs have been staged against a backdrop of new data showing a significant increase in the rate of new HIV infections among African Americans, especially women. AIDS is a leading killer of blacks under age 35.

In Milwaukee, the week concludes with a “Celebration Event” during which people will be invited to write the names of people they know who have died of or are living with AIDS, and place them in golden buckets arranged in the shape of a cross. “We are calling it a celebration because we want people to know the power of prayer can be invoked, even if you are infected, and that we do know people who are living victoriously with the virus,” Black Health Coalition project coordinator Randall Brown told “The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.”

Writing in “The San Francisco Chronicle,” pastor and AIDS lecturer Ronald Weatherford said that prayer was a good start, but that “black churches must confront the AIDS epidemic” with straight talk on prevention and abstinence, as well as reaching out to those affected. “I believe in the power of prayer,” he said. “However, if faith alone could move mountains, we would not have needed a Civil War to end slavery.”

*LUFKIN, TX: FAITHFUL GATHER TO PRAY ON LOOP

>From: PrayTX@aol.com

>by Bronwyn Turner, Staff Writer

Stephanie Davis was driving around the loop Saturday when she saw a crowd gathered for prayer as part of Loop 2000 Prayer Project. “God put it in my heart to stop, she said simply as she stood in the parking lot of First Assembly of God Church afterward.  She was among more than 1,000 who flocked to 14 different intersections leading into Lufkin. Stakes were driven into the ground and prayer raised. “This is a new millennium,” the Rev. Bettie Kennedy, speaking on radio station KSWP to the groups assembled at the prayer sites for Loop 2000 Prayer Project, said.  “We want our city free from drugs and violence.  We know prayer works and that those who have gathered are prayer warriors.”

The project, sponsored by the Angelina County Ministers’ Prayer Fellowship, involved some 200 churches.  Participants gathered at sites marked by banners at the “city gates,” the major intersections leading into Lufkin. Led by instructions broadcast over the radio, pastors at each site held a wooden stake with phrases from Second Chronicles written on it.  The stakes would be pointed toward one quadrant of the town—north, south, east and west—as prayers were offered by Alex Montilla of Iglesia Bautista La Fe, Lt. Cheryl Gilliam of the Salvation Army, Jeff Hastings of Lufkin First United Methodist and Todd Hudnall of First Assembly of God.

“We thank you, God, for a new millennium,” Montilla prayed as the groups faced the north, “bring revival to our hearts and to our churches.” Lt.  Gilliam prayed as the groups faced the west. “We’re asking that you come and dwell within this city,” she said.  “We’re not satisfied with visitations any more.” Hastings prayed as crowds faced the south. “Help us to seek Your face, like prodigal sons and daughters returning home from a far-off land,” he prayed.  “Take control of our lives, no matter how scary that may seem.” Hudnall prayed as crowds faced east. “Forgive us of self-centered attitudes of sectarian walls and denominational divisions,” he prayed.  “Cleanse us, Lord, from racism and every form of prejudice and hatred.  May Deep East Texans be a people who are part of a generation who reflect Your glory and bring honor to Your name.” Also stepping to the microphone at KSWP was the Rev. Roy Goeyns of the Church By Christ Jesus. “We believe you’re going to let a revival break out in this area, Lord,” he prayed.  “Help us to have clinging hearts.” Then Gail Poling stepped to the microphone to blow a shofar, ram’s horn, as stakes were pounded into the ground at each intersection.  Inside each stake was a small paper listing all the churches who had united for the prayer project. “The thing that always impresses me is seeing the whole body of Christ come together,” Claudia Lasiter said.  “We ought to do it more often.” Her husband agreed. “I wanted to come just to be a part of hopefully planting a seed of unity in the Lufkin area,” he said.

Their words echoed the prayer of the Rev. Cardell Roundtree of Diboll.  He asked the crowd to join hands to pray. “Join hands, because we are no longer separated,” he said.  “We are not a denomination.  We are a people.”

Bryan/College Station

Pastor Bruce Wood reports, “’Light the Brazos Valley’ is a city reaching prayer movement that is using the ‘Lighthouses of Prayer’ movement as the catalyst to rally the saints in united prayer for the cities of Bryan/College Station and surrounding communities.  There are at least seven churches that are solid in their vision to recruit lighthouses of prayer from their congregations.  At the present time we have registered approximately 500 lighthouse of prayer, and our goal is 2000 in 2000!  The first citywide rally was hosted at Aldersgate UMC on February 21.  The guest ministers were Hank Marion and Richard Shearer of Occupy the Land in Houston. Our annual pastors’ conference will be May 22-24 at Aldersgate.  The ministers leading the conference will be Ted Haggard and Peter Lord.  For more information, contact Pastor Bruce Wood of Aldersgate or Darlynne Beard, lay coordinator of ‘Light the Brazos Valley’ at 409-696-1376.” You may email Pastor Bruce Wood at bmwood@alpha1.net.

Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex

Ras Robinson, pastor of Fullness in Christ Church in Fort Worth wrote the following: “The North Tarrant County Pastors’ Prayer Fellowship held a luncheon on February 23 for prayer and fellowship with 26 present. During the meeting, Ras Robinson spoke to the intercessors present and apologized on behalf of pastors for sometimes rejecting and not understanding intercessors. Gloria Ramos replied on behalf of intercessors to accept the apology and to offer an apology on behalf of intercessors for not appreciating nor accepting pastors at times. The apology was accepted. We then invited the intercessors present to gather in a tight circle, and the pastors surrounded them to bless and pray for them. The intercessors responded by laying hands on the pastors’ feet and praying for each pastor present. It was a blessed time of healing. Vision was shared for reaching the entire population of North Tarrant  County and beyond through unified hearts and lives according to Psalm 33. The next luncheon is scheduled for March 30. It will again be hosted at Fullness in Christ Church, 1029 Saginaw Boulevard North, Fort Worth.  You may contact Ras at fullness@flash.net.  Please RSVP to 817-847-4181 by Monday Noon, March 27.

Laredo

With the vision of “blessing Laredo through prayer,” Pray Laredo! is uniting Laredo intercessors under the authority of their pastors.  Their promotional material says, “The purpose of Pray Laredo! is to organize citywide intercessors to pray with understanding for our church leadership (pastors, priests, elders, etc.), our local government officials, our schools, our law enforcement, etc., in order that we may see peace on our streets, the unsaved to come to faith in Jesus Christ, God to be lifted up in our community, and revival in every home, school, church, and business in Laredo. “Pray Laredo! is a group of intercessors who commit to pray regularly for Laredo and its leadership.  They are interdenominational and non-proselytizing.  Although one of our desires is citywide revival, which means seeing the unchurched reached with the gospel, the leadership will not proselytize members of Pray Laredo! from one church to another.  Pray Laredo! is not a church.  Its members must belong to a local church under the authority of its local clergy.” For more information (956)790-9020, Ron Richardson, Coordinator.

Lubbock

Pray Lubbock is moving ahead in their monthly Pastors Prayer Meeting on  the 19th floor of Metro Tower, Lubbock’s tallest building.  The large conference room flanked by windows on three sides is a strategic place for prayer for the city.  Following Pastors Prayer each month pastors are invited to lunch, hosted in a different church in the city.  That time is for fellowship and relationship building.  At the end of the lunch, 10 minutes is used to focus the vision of Pray Lubbock.  One or more members of the Pray Lubbock Ministry Team shares an inspirational, practical, short talk to keep the vision before everyone.  Some pastors who pray monthly at the tower are meeting in small groups in homes once a month for more relational prayer.  The Ministry Team composed of seven pastors and two laymen meets once a month (formerly once a week) to pray and plan.  Pastor Prayer Summits focus the vision, deepen relationships, and allow them to experience God’s presence together. Many congregations are involved in the Franklin Graham Crusade in April, however, they see it as simply one more vehicle to both reach the lost and increase vision and unity to see their city transformed.  Check Pray Lubbock’s website at www.praylubbock.com, email at steve@praylubbock.com, or telephone them at (806)794-PRAY.

*HOUSTON: TWO PRAYER REQUESTS

>From: “Jim Herrington” <jhmh@flash.net>

The church in Houston has two great opportunities on April 8, 2000.  I’m writing to ask you to mobilize the intercessory pray-ers and prayer ministries with whom you have influence.  Our purpose in mobilizing is to pray for a great harvest of new people to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Women Of Faith - on Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8, over 16,000 women will fill the Compaq Center to hear Christian testimonies and Biblical teachings that focus specifically on concerns and issues that women face.  Ask God to draw lost and unchurched women to this event.  Ask him to anoint speakers and teachers as they present. Ask him to give the lost and unchurched women who attend a tender, open heart to him.  This is a trans-denominational, multicultural gathering.  Ask God to use it to continue the work he is doing across the Greater Houston area to unify His body.

CeeJay Crusade (City for Jesus) - on Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8, churches from across the city will mobilize under the leadership of Pastor Steve Ams and Messiah Communications Network to hold a two-day evangelistic crusade that targets the poorest and most neglected residents of our city. On Friday mobile medical clinics will serve residents of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th Wards.  On Saturday at the George R. Brown Convention Center several events will occur.  Numerous local business will hold a job fair.  The “Power Team” will do a presentation for youth.  Free legal counsel will be offered by Christian attorneys.  These and many other attempts to meet the felt needs of people will take place.  At the end of the day, churches from across the denominational, cultural and racial spectrum will gather to worship and hear the evangelistic preaching of Rod Parsley.  Pray that this event will send forth the message that Jesus and his church care deeply for poor people.  Pray that real, specific needs will be met.  And, pray that God will draw 1000’s of lost and unchurched people to make first time commitments to Jesus as the Savior and Lord of their lives.

Thank you for your faithfulness in prayer.

Blessings, JTH

*PrayWORLD! 2000 UPDATES

>From: “Ben Jennings” <bjenning@ccci.org>

The third full week of PrayWORLD!2000 is approaching under the big theme, “Transformation Toward God’s Peace in our Cities.” By now, some of your people may be experiencing weariness, so  pass on these encouraging, incoming messages:

“In January, 1993,...I reported on the exploding...prayer movement, hinting at its future and describing its implications.. What I predicted in ‘93 falls far short of where God has brought the Church in prayer as we enter the 21st century.  The moment is pregnant with unprecedented partnership opportunities amid a changing..atmosphere...I think of (Andrew) Murray often as I pray through the guide day after day this month.  This is the closest any generation has ever gotten to the fulfillment of Murray’s vision.  Hallelujay—what a giant leap forward it is.”

·        David Bryant, founder/president of Concerts of Prayer Int’l.,   and a PrayWORLD!2000 Advisor.

“I’m sending the mails you send me about PrayWORLD!2000 to a national Christian newspaper and a national Christian TV program.  All those in my sphere of influence are aware of this awesome privilege and responsibility.”            - H.M.Riquelme, Chile, S.A.

“SAT-7 (Middle East TV satellite) staff here are praying through this (calendar) daily, and encouraging viewers to do the same.”

“It simply cannot be that the Lord will turn a deaf ear to the pleadings of millions of His people.  I have been using the booklet, “Seek God for the City” and Steve Hawthorne’s prayers are refreshing and exhilarating.  Our help comes from above.  Blessings!”

·        John Richard

“It’s been such a blessing to talk with and see the excitement of the congregations participating in our city-wide 50-day (we’ve extended it by 10 days) ‘round-the-clock prayer vigil in the Greater Austin (Texas) network using “Seek God for the City” and the PrayWORLD!2000 prayer calendar.  Teammates are praying that God will raise up at least 120 congregations to pray one 24-hour day quarterly.  Then the area would have a continuous prayer shield.”

·        Diane Johnson

“What a great prayer mobilizing effort.  I sent this (calendar) through our 500 Baptist Pastors Packets.  It was also sent out over our internet.”

·        Mrs. Onie M. Kittle, New Jersey

“We are involved in the PrayWORLD!2000...We are meeting in the mornings from 8:00-9:00.  More than 200 people from Enugu have joined with us.”

·        Campus Crusade Staff,  Nigeria

*DENVER, CO: PRAYER FOR A “GATEKEEPER”

>From: Jeannie Seals <Jeannie@gracedenver.org>

Our Pastor, Del Roberts from Grace Community Church in Denver CO was diagnosed two weeks ago with liver cancer.  He has had no health problems until just three weeks ago and now this.  This past Monday he went through colon surgery to remove a tumor in the colon.  It was a very critical surgery - to the point they said to him that he probably would not make it off the table.  He survived the surgery and they were able to remove the tumor.  He was going in to do a by-pass with a coloscomy.  There was not even any talk that they could even remove the tumor.  They were able to remove it and reattach the colon so he did not have to have a colostomy!!!  This was a miracle.

We now need another miracle and that is on the liver cancer.  He is recovering from colon surgery good - is having some fluid retention and we are praying God to put everything back in order in his body and it all work right so the fluid would decrease.  The liver cancer is in 80% of his liver and so they have given him 2 months to live.  We are believing God’s Word and holding on to it that Pastor Del will have a miracle and God will restore his liver and free his body from this cancer.

He is only 52 years old and a “gatekeeper” of our city and a spiritual father to many of the Pastors in our region.  He is a very vital part to our city and much needed.

Thank you for your prayers and support.  We have prayer going out all over the world for him from Argentina to Australia to Africa to South America and all over the USA.

Jeannie Seals, Rocky Mountain Awake
