CONFERENCE CALL: CONNECTING CITIES
>From: International Renewal Ministries <IRM@multnomah.edu>
Introducing Servant-Leaders Conference Call Can you state the
question out of which the Prayer Summits arose? Here it is: What would it take
to see a move of God initiated and sustained in a geographic area? Many cities
have had summits and have seen some measure of impact upon their city. I have
had the opportunity to hear many encouraging stories of how a move of God is
continuing in various cities. I have passed these stories on as much as
possible; as I share them, others are also encouraged. As part of our desire
to see this question answered, we want to introduce a vehicle of sharing this
encouragement. As I have been on the phone hearing a story of what God is
doing in a city, I have often thought, This is so encouraging. I wish others
could hear this! Beginning September 28th you will be able to. This day will
be our first Last Tuesday monthly conference call. This call will be co-hosted
by Phil Miglioratti (affiliated with Mission America Coalition and the Church
Prayer Leaders Network), one of the IRM Representatives, and me. Here is
the primary format: Each month we will feature what God is doing in a
particular city. Two people from that city will be on the line with us to
answer two questions; How is the Church impacting your city? and, more
importantly, What was the process God used to get you to this point? We will
have a time of questions and answers, some prayer, and then do it again the
following month. The emphasis will not be on the product, but upon the
process. We want to create inspiration, not imitation. We would love for
you to be on this call. If you want to, please do two things: 1) Make note of
the date and time - each call will be the Last Tuesday of the month from 9:00
AM to 10:00 AM Pacific time - and 2) Reply by clicking here
<mailto:IRM@multnomah.edu> to let us know you want the dial-in number and
access code. The city featured in September was Tallahassee, Florida; Boise,
Idaho was the focus city for October; Branson, Missouri was the November focus.
Amazing stories and strategies emerged in each call.

Advent: Celebrating the Coming of Christ
Advent at home and during corporate worship is a great way to keep the focus on
Christ's coming through the entire holiday season. The following article is a
good introduction to the subject and includes some elements to assist you and
your congregation in celebrating the coming of our Lord. Also included: two PDF
files you may download, print, and use in your church. These are a part of our
continually growing list of free Thanksgiving and Christmas Resources

ASSOCIATION FOR METRO/URBAN
MINISTRY
>From: roger@cityvoices.com
Introducing the Association for Metro/Urban Ministry
by Mark Walden, director of the Association for Metro/Urban Ministry
In becoming a part of SCUPE, the Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral
Education, CityVoices has become the publication of the Association for
Metro/Urban Ministry. AMUM is a recently launched network bringing together
urban ministers across the nation and across many denominations. Created with a
start-up grant from the Lilly Endowment, AMUM has two basic purposes:
1) To serve as a central information clearinghouse for the urban ministry
community. AMUM's web site connects its members and other users with jobs,
grants, conferences, trainings, print and audio/visual resources, job-seekers,
educational programs, volunteer programs, and more.
2) To serve as a central point for networking around urban ministry. AMUM
provides a place where those doing urban work can connect across lines of
geography, denomination, theology, profession, or any other division. AMUM
members can share ideas, build partnerships, and develop relationships, both
through the web site and through AMUM-sponsored gatherings, such as SCUPE's
Congress on Urban Ministry.
AMUM is a new and still-growing ministry; your ideas are invited, as well as
your contributions to our web site. Membership is quite affordable, and offers
benefits beyond those available to other users of the web site, including print
mailings of CityVoices. Check out the site - www.amum.net - and join the
Association for Metro/Urban Ministry today!

2005 PRAYER
GUIDE: PATH TO REVIVAL AND TRANSFORMATION
>From: PTM@prayertransformation.com
>At:
http://www.prayertransformation.com/
The 2005 Twin Cities Prayer Guide is here!
This year's prayer guide offers a unique path to revival and transformation. It
is written to be either a stand-alone instrument of personal prayer, or to be
used as a companion to the Quickening video (by the Sentinel Group) for
corporate prayer. Included in this year's guide are stories of revival and
transformation from around the world that will encourage you and your church to
pray for God to "do it here." We have added extra pages of sample outlines for
sermons and concerts of prayer.
Pastors, consider leading your church in praying about these biblical
principles together: holiness, humility, obedience, biblical unity, and a hunger
for God. As you allow God to knit your hearts together in prayer, imagine where
your church could be a year from now!
The Twin Cities Prayer Guide is free, but we do appreciate donations to help
with production and shipping costs. Order now and get enough to distribute to
your church before the start of the new year. To order your copies of the Twin
Cities Prayer Guide, contact us by phone at: 612-278-1717, or by email at:
PTM@prayertransformation.com. If you can pick up your prayer guides at our
downtown office, that would be a great help to our staff. If not, let us know
about the best way to deliver them to you.

DO YOU NEED A LIFE
COACH?
>From: COACHINGTODAY@cs.com
Why You Need a Life Coach
+ Why do world-famous golfer, Tiger Woods, and other professional athletes still
require coaches?
+ Why do successful actors and opera singers have coaches?
Because we simply must have help, if we are to reach the higher goals we set for
ourselves in life. Clearly the acting, singing, and sports coaches could never
accomplish what their star clients have. And yet, their star clients will admit
that
they could have never reached their dreams without their coaches' input,
inspiration and impelling.
+ How many of the promises that you've made to yourself through the years will
you have kept?
+ How much closer will you be to reaching that dream that God implanted years
ago in your heart?
If you've lost sight of your dream, you really do need coaching.
Many people are so busy trying to please others and help them reach their dreams
that we never take the time to honor ourselves and move forward to reach our own
dreams. It may be easier for you to let down yourself and your own expectations
than to let down others. But until you are making significant progress toward
reaching your own dreams, you are not truly capable of helping others.
As your life coach, I will coach you to produce fulfilling results in your
personal, family, and professional life. I will help you clarify your vision,
develop your personal strategy, motivate you to take action, and provide a level
of accountability.
Hey, it doesn't cost you a dime to find out. I'll even pay for the long
distance, no matter where in the world you live!
Request your FREE initial coaching session and lets discuss whether or not life
coaching is for you.

TEN MARKS OF EFFECTIVE MINISTERS
>From: "PHD" <phd@wideopenwest.com>
1. Maintain a vibrant relationship with Christ to the very end.
Effective ministers recognize that a regular practice of spiritual disciplines
and an ongoing development of personal faith is the most important thing in
their ministry. 2. Live with an expectancy of repeated renewal. Repeated
ministry experiences have taught effective ministers that they should expect and
welcome God's working in their lives whatever the circumstances. Indeed,
effective ministers recognize that His repeated and sometimes painful working in
their lives is His way to develop greater spiritual and character formation.
3. Live the truth of God in such a way that his convictions and trust in
God's faithfulness is real. Having experienced the pain of standing alone
for the unchangeable Truth of God as revealed in the inspired Scriptures and
having experienced the fear of ultimate failure and rejection, effective
ministers discover that God has been more than faithful. They know God is real,
God is present, God is active, and God has been repeatedly faithful to them.
They live by the conviction that there is nothing that can happen to them that
God won't somehow deliver them as His gracious will determines. Such confidence
propels them through each episode of their ministry, regardless of the
circumstances.
4. Maintain a learning posture throughout life and enjoy learning from
various sources. Recognizing that wisdom comes from continued learning,
effective ministers have a sharp eye and an insatiable curiosity to expand their
learning. Whether through formal experiences (e.g. academic degrees) or through
informal means (e.g. reading), continuing education provides effective ministers
with one of the greatest sources of enjoyment and growth.
5. Have multiple mentors. How many mentors have you had in your ministry?
Who are those who presently give you the encouragement and coaching in your
ministry? J. Robert Clinton suggests that over a lifetime, fifteen is not too
many. I would agree. Effective ministers have sought and still seek mentors for
various areas of their ministry. From these gifted individuals, effective
ministers learn how to strengthen their ministries by reflecting on their
mentor's insights and following in their footsteps.
6. Have a dynamic, vital, and changing philosophy of ministry. Every
decade of my ministry in the United States has seen a major shift in philosophy
of ministry from Sunday School busses (1960"s), door-to-door evangelism
(1970"s), Church Growth (1980"s), Leadership development (1990"s), and what I
believe will be the emphasis in the first decade of the new millennium,
congregational and pastoral health. In my twelve years in my present
congregation, I have also experienced at least four major shifts in philosophy
of ministry based on the needs, resources, challenges and opportunities which
God had given in those times. Effective ministers recognize that there's more
than just one way to do ministry. Thus they are in a mode of continually looking
for and adapting the most effective philosophy of ministry for their time and
place.
7. Minister from a broad perspective of an awareness that whatever occurs in
ministry is part of a larger destiny which God has planned for them. If
there's any experience that teaches us that we do not shape our own destiny,
it's the Christian ministry. Isaiah, speaking by the Holy Spirit, said it better
than anyone. Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye
has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him."
(Isaiah 64:4 NIV)
8. View selection, development and empowerment of leadership among their
highest ministry priorities. The effective leader has learned that
effective, healthy ministry is not a one-man show. Instead, it consists in
viewing relationships as the means and end of effective ministry implementation.
Anything of lasting value and impact in the church happens, by Gods design,
through a continuous process of developing an ever-enlarging sphere of healthy
relationships directed, encouraged, and deployed into effective Kingdom service.
Take a member out for lunch this week (and if you do it often, be sure to eat
lots of salad!).
9. View their present ministry from a life-long perspective by which they
continue growing in an ever-expanding awareness of Gods destiny for them.
Effective ministers are not constantly looking for the greener grass of other
churches or ministries. Instead, they embrace a contentment of serving God which
comes from a sense that they really are serving God. Whether its where they are
now or somewhere else really doesnt matter. What does matter is the unmistakable
conviction that they understand that God sees their ministry from the
perspective of an entire lifetime. This perspective helps them to move away from
short-term perspective of gains or losses toward a broader perspective that sees
conflict, decline, growth and peace as part of the normal, expected
congregational life cycle. Furthermore, effective ministers recognize that if
God really wants them somewhere, theres nothing they can do to stop it. God
builds His Church as He chooses, according to His plan. Our destiny is to be
willing to let the Potter shape and mold the clay in ways only He can determine
are best. Jack Hayford said it best, God is not so much interest in what I am
now as He is in what I am becoming.
10. Leave behind one or more ultimate contributions -a lasting legacy. Do
effective leaders intentionally plan a lasting legacy? Perhaps one cant always
say. There are many examples of ordinary people who, without being placed in
extraordinary circumstances, would not be considered heroes. Winston Churchill,
Abraham Lincoln, and many biblical figures such as Queen Esther, Moses, Joseph,
St. Paul, and Mary, Jesus" mother are just some which come to mind. What
characterizes those with lasting legacies is that they werent looking for
self-aggrandizement. However, whenever God provided an opportunity, a fire
within them, they addressed the situation with faith, boldness and the assurance
only that God would be with them. God used their humility of faith and made from
them a lasting legacy. Effective leaders have an eye for Gods personal leading
in their lives; they are also willing to put out extraordinary efforts and
sacrifice to follow that leading. It is, I believe, this quiet but
relentless--seeking after the heart of God for Gods personal calling for their
lives that causes effective ministers examine their God-given gifts and
experiences. Then, in their humble response to the awe of Gods grace, these
ministers fulfill their God-given unquenchable passion in a way that results in
a lasting legacy. Some ministers will have few lasting legacies; others have
many. In the end, how many one has depends entirely on the talents which God has
graciously given to His servants (Matthew 25:14ff). Whatever legacy He has in
mind for us, our greatest response is simply to be faithful to His calling.

10 of George Barna"s Book, Leaders on Leadership, in which J. Robert
Clinton and Richard W. Clinton discuss the Life Cycle of a Leader.
THE CHALLENGE OF FINISHING WELL

Dr. Robert Clinton, a leadership professor at Fuller Theological Seminary, notes
that 70 percent of leaders dont finish well. He has identified six common traits
of leaders who quit running the race effectively:
1. They lose their learning posture.
2. The attractiveness of their character wanes.
3. They stop living by their convictions.
4. They fail to leave behind ultimate contributions.
5. They stop walking in an awareness of their influence and destiny.
6. They lose their once vibrant relationship with God. Look those six traits
over very carefully and answer this question: Have any of these self-destructive
time bombs crept into your life to any degree? Think this life through with me a
little here. Starting well is beneficial. Staying the course is critical. But if
we dont finish well that tends to be our legacy regardless of how we started or
lived most of our lives. It doesnt seem fair, but the truth is that we will be
remembered most for how we finished. Therefore, finishing well is something to
which we all should give some serious thought. Check out this months Cadre
Connection, "The Challenge of Finishing Well, Part 1," to stimulate your thought
process and make any necessary changes NOW so you can finish well.
