1.    CITY REACHING: WHERE DO WE BEGIN?

>Posted:  http:www.cityreaching.com

How to get a City Reaching Movement Started in Your City/Community

The Lord has a way of bringing the Body of Christ together in one city or community that may not be done the same way by Him in another.  However, there are principles that we believe are common in the formation of each city movement such as prayer, holistic evangelism, united worship and reconciliation.

Several years back, the Mission America City/Community team published a guide designed to help servant-leaders start down the path of city reaching or city transformation. "The City Discovery Guide" as it is called is just one of many tools you can use. It is designed to be used by a group of interested Christians in a city/community who gather around the vision of the "Whole Church taking the Whole Gospel to the Whole City/Community". Individuals can complete "The City Discovery Guide" well in advance of any such meeting.

We have provided that guide below for you to go through on your own. Please take a moment to provide answers in the City Discovery Guide form (outlined below) to tell us what God is doing in your city.

City Discovery Guide

Part 1:  What Do You See God Doing In Your City?
Key Principle---Instead of creating our own agenda, we need to discover what God is doing and begin cooperating with Him. (This can be used when a group of leaders meet together)

List how you see God at work in your city in each of the following areas.  What is the proof of His activity?

1.  PRAYER

2.  PARTNERSHIPS:

3.  EVANGELISM

4.  RECONCILIATION

5.  OTHER

Part 2:  What are the greatest barriers in our city for the advancement of the gospel?

WITHIN THE CHURCH

OUTSIDE THE CHURCH

Part 3:  In light of parts 1 & 2, what are the highest priorities for the advancement of God's kingdom in our city/community?

Part 4:  Which of the resources available to us can help us meet our priorities as

mentioned in Part 3?

Part 5:  How can the National Evangelism initiatives help us reach our city/community for Christ?

Part 6:  What can we do better together than we can do separately to comprehensively reach our city/community for Christ?

EXAMPLES OF COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS:

Part 7:  List three immediate "Next Steps" that the group agrees to take in the direction of lovingly bringing the gospel of Christ to every person in your city/community.

STEP ONE:

STEP TWO:

STEP THREE:

Your answers to the above questions would provide helpful research on city reaching.  If you would be willing to share your answers, or have questions, contact: questions@cityreaching.com

2.    NEW - LEARNING TO LOVE TO PRAY

"Prayer is not conquering God's reluctance, but taking hold of God's willingness."  So says Phillips Brooks, once called the greatest American preacher of the 19th Century (and author of the words to "O Little Town of Bethlehem").  Is your church "taking hold of God's willingness" through prayer? Does your church need a "spiritual checkup" on its prayer life?

Consider taking advantage of a new training program from the Mission America Coalition called "Learning to Love to Pray."  Dr. Alvin VanderGriend, National Facilitator of Lighthouse Ministries for the Mission America Coalition, has developed the training.

Recharge your church’s prayer life

Dr. VanderGriend is available to your church to facilitate this one-day citywide or regional event. Alvin’s vision is to help individual Christians and churches recharge their prayer lives and increase their effectiveness in reaching out for Christ. The event is designed for:
Intercessors who want to labor together in heaven’s throne room
Pastors who want to ignite prayer in the local church
Believers who want to learn to love to pray and pray the lost into the kingdom
Prayer leaders who want to lead prayer ministries effectively
Churches that want to become "houses of prayer”

A host church provides meeting space, promotes this seminar to its members and surrounding churches, manages the finances and provides volunteers to help facilitate. Host churches benefit the most by having a high percentage of their members attend the seminar and rediscover a passion for prayer.

Segments of The One Day Prayer Event

Learning to Love to Pray is an all-day prayer event (usually Saturday) with segments suited to different groups.

Early Morning (7:00– 8:30 a.m.) Intercessors Prayer Time
Intercessors from the community are invited to meet at the host church in order to lay a prayer foundation for the seminar, to intercede for the churches and their leaders and to seek God’s blessing on the city and the community.  Intercessors will do the work of prayer:
   Spending time with the Lord
   Wrestling over God’s agenda
Listening to what God may be saying
Releasing God’s power and grace on the churches of the community

Daytime (9:00-12:00 noon & 1:00-3:00 p.m.) Learning to Love to Pray
Prayer is not something most of us naturally love to do.  E.M. Bounds once said, “Prayer is the easiest and the hardest of all things; the simplest and the sublimest; the weakest and the most powerful . . . but the one in which we are the least skilled, the most averse to its use”. Despite that, it IS possible to learn to love to pray and to do it well.

In the MORNING session seminar participants will learn that:
Prayer is the talking part of a love relationship with God
Some prayers are always answered “yes”
Prayer is powerful and can do anything God can do
There are usually good reasons for unanswered prayer
Mistakes about prayer are really mistakes about God

In the AFTERNOON portion of the seminar, participants will learn to love and lift those in their circles of influence through praying, caring and sharing.  In this segment we’ll ask and answer questions like:

What is a Lighthouse?
Why is the Lighthouse prayer-evangelism strategy so effective?
Who should I put on my reaching-out prayer list?
How should I pray for those on my prayer list?
How do I start a Lighthouse?

As a bonus each participant will receive a complimentary copy of "Light Your World With Prayer" — a devotional for deepening your prayer life and learning to pray for the lost.

Evening (7:00–9:00 p.m.) The Effective Prayer Leader
Prayer ministries that are well led will flourish.  Those that are not well led will languish.  Local church, citywide and regional prayer leaders will learn about:
Communicating prayer opportunities, needs and answers
The “why” and “how” of prayer training
   Creating helpful prayer support systems
    Celebrating prayer victories
    Finding helpful prayer resources

5.    SUNDAY SOUNDBYTES

>From: David Mains <info@teamsundays.org>

Here's a short Sunday morning prayer for between when people get out of their cars and when they sit down in the church sanctuary:
S is for Still Alive and able to attend church, thank you, Lord.
U is for Undivided Attention. I'm expecting you to speak to my heart.
N is for Notice Me and whether the praise I offer is sincere.
D is for Don't Overlook Needs. If someone's hurting I'll do what I can.
A is for Affirm Our Leaders. I'll let them know I'm behind them.
Y is for Your Kingdom Come, Christ. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. May this be a good Sunday all around the world including right here. Amen.

Have a good week!    David R. Mains

A call to worship: On this weekend when we honor those who gave their
lives so we can experience freedom, we once again recognize what our
Lord and Savior did on our behalf. How loving he was, but also how
brave, knowing ahead of time much of what he would have to endure. Join
me in praising Jesus this morning. . .

Before reading from God's Word: Key executives with The New York Times

The Book of Virtues by William Bennett was a national best seller.
Recent revelations about his gambling have tarnished his reputation. But
the truth is, when examined closely, all of us come up short in one way
or another. If we are to pass God's judgment, it will only be because of
his great mercy.

Isaiah wrote in chapter 24, "The earth suffers for the sins of its
people, for they have twisted the instructions of God."  Scientists now
say that commercial fishing has wiped out 90% of the world's populations
of large fish. Species in danger include tuna, cod, marlin, swordfish,
halibut, skate, flounder, and shark. Canadian biologist Ransom Myers
warns that at present rates certain species will start to disappear from
supermarket shelves. Because of advanced fishing technology such as
sonar he says the unfortunate fish have "no place left in the world to
hide." Some scientists fear the damage may be beyond repair.

Introducing a new church baby: Last year in America the Bible accounted
for half the most popular baby names. Seven of the top 10 boy's names
and three of the top 10 names for girls came from scripture. For the
second year in a row Jacob was #1 for boys and Emily for girls. Other
Bible names, beside Jacob, were Michael, Matthew, Joshua, Joseph,
Andrew, Daniel, Hannah, Sara, and Abigail. We have a new baby in the
church to introduce today, and his/her name is. . .

6.    9 CHALLENGES FOR AMERICAN CHRISTIANITY

Barna's Beefs
His nine challenges for American Christianity -
            prophetic words, or sweeping generalizations?

Challenge 1:  The Same Old Same Old

Religious energy may be experienced through new forms of music or dramatic architecture, but there is a noteworthy staleness to the faith experience of most Americans.
If Christianity is to be a serious component in people's lives, there must be an intentional and strategic shakeup of what we do and how we do it within our faith communities.  More of the same won't get us any farther down the road of genuine discipleship.

Challenge 2:  The Decline of the Evangelicals

We categorize people as "evangelicals" on the basis of their theological beliefs. The diminution of the group suggests that aberrant theology and doctrine are increasingly invading the inner circle of the Bible-believing community. Whether you applaud evangelicals or abhor them, recognize the implications of their marginalization. Every day, the church is becoming more like the world it allegedly seeks to change. At what point does that collapse become a "crisis" and merit concentrated and strategic response?

Challenge 3:  The Ethnic Ascension

In the last quarter-century it seems that we have learned how to sell Bibles but not how to sell what's in the Bible. Increasingly, people pick and choose the Bible content they like or feel comfortable with, but ignore the rest of God's counsel. This tendency seems especially prolific among young adults and teenagers. What can we do to elevate the prominence, credibility, and perceived value of god's Word in the eyes of a fickle and distracted public?

Challenge 5:  A Costless Faith

Christianity has no cost in America. We've made it way too easy to be "born again"- perhaps much easier than Jesus intended. When do we get to the point at which we accept smaller numbers of intensely devoted people rather than feverishly investing in filling auditoriums and stadiums with massive numbers of the lukewarm "Christians" that Jesus promised to spew from his mouth (Rev. 3:16)?

Challenge 6:  Understanding the Supernatural

Shockingly few Americans understand the power and significance of the supernatural world--the real supernatural dimension. Most Americans deny the existence of Satan and the Holy Spirit and are blissfully ignorant of the spiritual battle that rages around and within them. Who will inform and motivate God's people about the realities of the battle?

Challenge 7:  New Form and Substance

Aided by the rise of Busters in the pastorate, Mosaics (18 and younger) will question and reshape much of the theology that many churches embrace. And they will alter the very ways in which the community of saints gather and experience God's and each other's presence. You can count on some foundation-rattling challenges coming from the Mosaics. Are you ready?

Challenge 8:  Isolation amid Plenty

There are more than 300,000 Protestant churches in the U.S.  There are another 20,000 Catholic churches that can be added to the mix. In many communities, churches compete rather than cooperate. What will it take for churches to become the Church? At what point will we drop our territorialism and recognize how much we need each other in order to complete God's work his way?

Challenge 9:  Where Are the Leaders?

The people who fill the positions of leadership in churches today are, for the most part, teachers--good people, lovers of God, well-educated, gifted communicators--but not leaders. They do not have or understand vision. They are incapable of motivation and mobilizing people around God's vision. They fail to direct people's energies and resources effectively and efficiently.
For the church to become strong again, we must heed the guidance of the leaders God has called and gifted for that purpose, while growing through the focused teaching of those who are gifted to explicate his Word and its profound implications for our lives.

7.    ARE YOU CHASING VISITORS AWAY?

>From: Solutions <solutions@outreachmarketing.com>

SECRET SHOPPERS
It is easy "to miss the forest because of all the trees" when it comes to your own church. This is the place where you pour out your heart and energy every day, so it is easy to be "blind" to the little things that may be broken, missing or needed. Sometimes, what you need is a fresh pair of eyes to "shop" your church and help you see things in a new light.

Have an outside person that you trust (and from whom you can take criticism) come and evaluate your visitor experience. Provide them with a checklist of items that are important to your church's vision and have them make comments about their experience. Some key areas to evaluate may be:

1)  SIGNAGE AND DIRECTIONS - How easy is it to see your church and find the parking lot? Once your visitor arrived, could he have easily found the worship center, classrooms,  nursery and information area?

2)  GREETERS - Was your visitor greeted in a pleasant manner that made her feel welcome or did she feel ignored or self-conscious?

3)  VISITOR MATERIALS - If your visitor was looking for more information on your church and its programs, could he find it? Was he given a bulletin and was it written in a friendly and "non-churchy" manner? Do your materials go together and send the same message visually and through content?

4)  SUBJECTIVE FACTORS - Studies show that a visitor may decide if she is going to return to your church within the first five
seconds! Since this is too short a time for her to actually "know" anything about your church, how is your church judged? By subjective factors like the church atmosphere, dress and audience demographics.

Even though "you can't please all the people all the time," it is important for your church to know the audience you are trying to reach and to tailor the more subjective aspects of your church to be comfortable for this audience. For example, if you are trying to reach seekers with a "come as you are" attitude, then your greeters should not be at the front doors in three-piece suits. Once you receive your evaluation, take a look at the areas that need improvement and design a plan to slowly implement changes. 8.    "PLANNING A PRAYER SUMMIT" RESOURCES

Prayer Summits > How to Schedule a Summit > Planning a Summit

The most critical element in planning for a Prayer Summit is often overlooked. It is not in something left undone in the tactical plans, the nuts and bolts of preparation for a Prayer Summit, but in something taken for granted! In a few cities, Prayer Summits have been conducted and the Prayer Summit movement in those cities has died shortly thereafter. What was wrong? Very simply, they failed to understand that a Prayer Summit is not ultimately and exclusively about a Prayer Summit. God has something much more critical on His heart.

Unless there is a commitment to a long-term process of renewal, to a relationally based, prayer-driven, transformational model of renewal, then the summit is only a wonderful prayer retreat that may have short-term impact, but will fall short of citywide impact.

The first and most critical question that must be answered is this:
*    Are we as pastors wanting a simple prayer retreat for personal renewal?
*    Or, are we sensing that God is calling us to prayer and renewal for both a personal and corporate purpose—first to learn to pray together, then to walk together and out of that learn to work together?
*    To what extent is there a sense that God is wanting us to give some expression to "the Church of the city?"
The entire process of getting to a summit must be relational. To approach the Prayer Summit like the typical para-church, multi-denominational event in a city will seed the movement from the beginning with a flawed DNA. The contact plan must be personal. Invitations to attend the summit must be personal and engaging. Every pastor in the identified geographic area deserves an invitation to the summit if the call to prayer is genuinely citywide, and that invitation must be personal. This is an extensive undertaking. But the failure at this point will reduce what should be a citywide endeavor to a much narrower gathering that will have too little impact on the city in the long-term. If the summit event is elevated over that of relationship—making sure every pastor gets an engaging personal invitation to attend—then we have violated the very relational nature of the movement, and short-circuited the citywide unity that we seek. Leaving any pastor uninvited draws the circle too narrow. By lengthening the planning line, more time is spent prior to the summit in building the relational network among pastors. That undertaking will serve the process for years to come. This will be the seedbed for the "relational construct" in the city that will sustain a long-term, pastor-led renewal process.

10.    YOUR $10,000 SERMON

>From: "ANS Story" <ANS_Story@sheperd.com>
>By: Michael Ireland

LANSING, MI  (ANS) -- "WANTED: Nation Changing Sermons -- $10,000 Reward!!" That's the message being sent out across the nation by The Amy Foundation, founder of the prestigious Amy Writing Awards (www.amyfound.org <http://www.amyfound.org/>

Just imagine, some fortunate pastor is going to win $10,000 next summer simply for following his calling to teach the Word of God! The Amy Foundation, founder of the prestigious Amy Writing Awards has just announced the First Amy Pastor Awards.

Fifteen cash awards totaling $30,000 will be given to winning pastors simply for submitting ten sermon outlines, based on each of the ten components of Christ-centered disciple making as defined by the foundation's comprehensive brochure Becoming A Christ Centered, Disciple-Making Church, available free from participating Christian bookstores or via the Amy website.

The Amy Pastor Awards is the idea of Jim Russell, successful businessman and cofounder of the Amy Foundation, intended to motivate pastors to focus on helping the people in their pews move from their "over-busy stuck-in-a-spiritual-rut-believer status" to heart transforming spiritual maturity. In other words the goal is to help pastors more intentionally disciple their congregations from the pulpit.

The Foundation encourages the use of this definition of a disciple: "A disciple is an obedient follower of Jesus Christ who is actively engaged in making disciples by teaching obedience to everything Jesus commanded in self, family, congregation, and neighborhood." As one pastor said, "The program gets people 'deep' and builds spirituality."

Will ten consecutive and well-focused Christ-centered sermons make a difference?

The final words of Jesus recorded in the Gospel of Matthew mandated all future true Christian believers to go and make disciples.

Jesus said to his disciples, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20 (ESV)

What do true disciples do? They disciple others! When pastors teach the basics of being a disciple, the Holy Spirit will transform the hearts, minds and lives of believers. That's what this is really all about.

The deadline for entries is June 30, 2004, so pastors have plenty to time to obtain a free copy of the Becoming A Christ Centered, Disciple-Making Church brochure and complete set of Rules and Submission Guidelines before they begin to prayerfully craft and fine tune their ten sermon outlines.

Any pastor or associate pastor serving an organized congregation is eligible to make a submission for the $10,000 first prize or the 14 other cash awards.

The Amy Foundation, founded in 1976 by W. James Russell and his wife Phyllis, was named after their daughter.

The Foundation is best known for its Amy Writing Awards, which is an annual call to present biblical truth reinforced with scripture in secular, non-religious publications. It is acclaimed as the most popular journalism contest in the nation and results in tens of millions of Americans learning of biblical principles every year via the mainstream media.

The Foundation's mission is to present biblical truth to the American people for the purpose of making the United States a discipled nation by equipping churches to effectively teach obedience of everything Jesus has commanded us to do.

12.    "WHAT DID YOU SAY, PASTOR?"

>From:  Pastor's Weekly Briefing <pwb@family.org>
>By H.B. London, Jr.

I lost a dear friend last weekend, and the Body of Christ lost one of its choicest shepherds. Pastor Ron Miehl died after a 20-year battle with leukemia, but he seldom talked about it. His concentration was on his nearly 10,000-person flock at Beaverton (Ore.) Foursquare Church, his family, his writing and his friends. One of the most helpful books I have read in recent years was God Works the Night Shift. His recent publication, The Tender Commandments, was used as the foundation for this year's National Day of Prayer observance.
Pastor Miehl was just 59 years of age, but his wisdom and multiple contributions to the greater church would fill two life times. He made everyone feel special. He was down-to-earth, and had not a hint of ego need. His services, which averaged at least 6,000 on Sunday mornings, were simple. No big choirs, nor even a worship team, but a praise time that was genuine, a message that was applicable, and an experience for those in attendance that was very personal. He was generous to a fault. I'm not sure I have ever met a man quite like him. He was determined that the church would not be built on his personality, and for 30 years, he pointed his people to Jesus.
Beecher wrote, "When a good man goes, he leaves behind him much of himself. Being dead, he speaks." Ron Miehl
will continue to speak for a long time. I only wish you might have known him.

15.    STARTERS FOR PRAYER MEETINGS ... AND MORE!

>From: Bob Hill <bob.hill@moody.edu>

“If we pray among a select society of Christians, we draw near to God with holy boldness, something like what we use in our duties of secret worship. We have reason to take more freedom among fellow saints and whose hearts have felt many of the same workings as our own.”    A Guide to Prayer, Isaac Watts, p 58

Prayer material on Web at  ht.://www.bible.org <ht.://www.bible.org/>  includes:

1.  "Teachers of Prayer Fellowship" list of Teachers,  ("Academic and nonacademic)

The list of  "Teachers of Prayer" on the web site has been revised.  It now has 67 names of "Teachers of Prayer."
ht.://www.bible.org/docks/splice/prayer/TOPF-memberslist30420.htm

To view e-mail addresses you have to download the list.  You may need to put into "landscape" format to see all the columns.  The "Teachers of Prayer" are listed by state so people looking of help in teaching and promoting prayer can find someone in their area.

2.  Quotes To Motivate To Prayer
ht.://www.bible.org/docks/splice/prayer/prayerquotes.htm

3.  A Collection Of Poems To Stir The Heart Of The Believer To Prayer

4.  Starters for the prayer meeting.
ht.://www.bible.org/docks/splice/prayer/starters/toc.htm

A "prayer meeting starter" is a short Bible study on the subject of prayer, designed to get the pray-ers focused on the task at hand and to give the Holy Spirit an opportunity to prepare us for prayer.
