1. 50 DAY
SPIRITUAL ADVENTURE
>From: "Carol Anderson" <info@teamsundays.org>
--->NPPNote:
This year's themes from the new 50 Day Spiritual Adventure are as current as the
headlines. Consider employing the themes as the focus of your weeknight Prayer
Meeting or small group meetings.
Standing Tall - Facing Fears that Grip the Soul
When we really get down to it, everyone struggles with fear of some sort at
different times in their lives. But those harassing fears, the ones that are
deep in our soul that probably no one knows about but you and God and perhaps a
close friend, are the ones that the enemy of our soul loves to use to wreak
havoc in our lives. Our Heavenly Father knows our fears and longs for us to
realize that He can help us to stand tall and strong against them. In this 50
Day Spiritual Adventure we will look at eight fears that are common to mankind
and learn new ways to rely on our Great God for His strength for our weakness.
Theme 1 – Face the fear of terrorism and war – Living where
terrorists strike repeatedly is like having the same bad dream night after
night. War is worse. So we can understand why Israel might have been resistant
to Joshua’s plans for the conquest of a “promised land.” Joshua’s troops were
neither trained nor equipped for the battles they faced. But God had given him
promises about being victorious. “Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the
Lord your God is with you.” To stand tall in this day of terrorism and war,
confront the unknown with confidence because God’s Word can always be relied on.
Theme 2 – Face the fear of financial insecurity – “I have learned
the secret of living in every situation whether it is with a full stomach or
empty, with plenty or little,” writes Paul in Philippians 4:12. Most of us will
admit we haven’t reached this level of spiritual maturity. Financial insecurity
can be terrifying. It’s a tactic of Satan to strike when his victims are the
most vulnerable. Not having adequate resources opens people to his devilish
attacks. To stand tall and not be consumed by the fear of financial insecurity
requires open communication and a deep trust in God that says, “I know God
always has my best interests at heart.”
Theme 3 – Face the fear of rejection and betrayal – To the
believers in Jerusalem Paul was considered a terrorist. They spoke of him in
hushed tones. They heard he had a change of heart and switched sides. Could
they trust this “strange conversion?” Most remained skeptical. But Barnabas
stood tall and took a chance on this former persecutor, bringing him before the
apostles in Jerusalem. It’s easy to keep people out of our lives and play it
safe. But rejection was not the way of Barnabas or his Lord and it shouldn’t be
our way either.
Theme 4 – Face the fear of skeletons in the closet – We all fear
being exposed in one way or another. It could be terrifying if the proverbial
skeleton in the closet got out! King David experienced this horror. His secret
sins were made public. But with that exposure he found that “The Lord is like a
father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him,” and “I
confessed all my sins and you forgave me!” Most believers would testify that
God gives them more grace than they deserve. It is this side of the Lord we
will explore.
Theme 5 – Face the fear of failure and disgrace - On a stormy
night in the middle of the sea, the disciples were fighting heavy winds when
what appeared to be a ghost came walking on the rough water toward them. It was
Jesus. Peter said to him, “If it’s really you tell me to come to you by walking
on the water.” The invitation was given. What a horrendous position for Peter
to get into. If the sea held him up, he’d be a hero. But failure seemed the
more likely outcome. Peter stepped out of the boat and…when he began to sink,
Jesus reached out and grabbed him.
Theme 6 – Face the fear of disease and death – There are valid
reasons to dread disease and death. But there are also powerful truths that
enable us to stand tall in the face of these fears. How important it is to know
the Great Physician! And when walking through the dark valley of death, what
truth could come close to what Jesus said in John 11? “I am the resurrection
and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die like everyone else,
will live again.” The Bible addresses disease and death and though the passages
don’t give us all the answers, they certainly provide enough help to calm our
fears.
Theme 7 – Face the fear of the paralyzing “what-ifs” – Worry and
fear are closely related. Sometimes it’s hard to tell where one stops and the
other begins. Worry usually relates to what might happen in the future.
“What if my car breaks down?” or “What if I get a serious illness?” can be
paralyzing “what ifs”. Jesus made a clear contrast between worry and exercising
faith in a caring and compassionate God. “Don’t worry about tomorrow,” were his
words, “Today’s trouble is enough for today.”
Theme 8 – Face the fear of gathering doom
– Some people prefer not to think about the future. World problems like nuclear
weapons, AIDS, water shortages, human trafficking and “superbug” infectious
diseases are too overwhelming. Knowing the resurrected Christ personally helps
us stand tall against these global fears. Because of his promises we can
anticipate that wonderful day when he is revealed to the whole world and all is
made right.

New this year is a change in the format for the adult
journaling process. Instead of having one book with 50 days worth of daily
devotional times, we have broken it up by week into something we are calling
Bulletin Journals. These can be stuffed in the Sunday bulletin and give
everyone a chance to spend the whole week following a Sunday service referring
back to the pastor's preaching theme for that week.

2. THE
PASSION OF THE CHRIST - RESOURCES
>From: "Naomi A. Frizzell" <nfrizzell@bellsouth.net>
Mission America Coalition previews "The Passion of the Christ"
Strategic Gathering of Leaders Focused On Using Movie for Outreach
Burbank, CA (12/19/03) - Nearly 100 Christian leaders from across the country
gathered in Burbank, CA earlier this month for a special screening of the Mel
Gibson movie "The Passion Of The Christ." The meeting, organized by the Mission
America Coalition (MAC), offered many leaders their first opportunity to view
the film, hear from producer Mel Gibson and pray and strategize about
appropriate follow-up to enhance the film's use for outreach. The movie, a
graphic portrayal of the last twelve hours of the life of Jesus Christ and his
resurrection, is slated for release February 25, 2004 (Ash Wednesday).
Gibson, who spent nearly an hour in dialogue with the group, explained that the
idea for the film had been coming to him for years and that the story is "the
pinnacle of history and needs to be told realistically." Gibson added that, as
can be seen in media reports, the film is generating a lot of reaction. "You
either love it or you hate it," he said.
Reaction from Christian leaders at the screening was overwhelmingly positive.
Dr. Paul Cedar, chairman of MAC, believes the film "offers a tremendous
opportunity for Christians across America to introduce people to Jesus Christ."
Cedar adds that the meeting of leaders had significant potential for mobilizing
Christians who will then invite their friends and neighbors to see and
experience the film and prays "tens of thousands of people will come to believe
in Christ through The Passion film."
For Major Charles F. Gillies, Jr., the Evangelism, Prayer and Spiritual
Formation Secretary for the Salvation Army USA Western Territory, "It (the
movie) was very brutal and realistic - if that doesn't move people, I don't know
what will. Mel has given the Church a tremendous opportunity to engage our
culture." Dr. Cornell Haan, National Facilitator of Spiritual Unity for MAC,
believes the film asked the key question, "Can one man die for the sins of
another?" and "then gives the answer that Jesus shed His blood as atonement for
the sins of each person. The film is a wonderful evangelism tool."
Rev. Wayne Pederson, President of MAC, says the movie could well be one of the
most powerful evangelistic tools in the marketplace because "The most important
day in history is the day Jesus died on the cross and took on Himself all my
sins and the sins of the world. The Passion effectively and powerfully tells the
story of the great price paid by the Son of God for our disobedience." Pederson
says they want to encourage followers of Jesus to invite their friends and
colleagues to view the film; then "talk with them about what Jesus did for us so
that we could live forever."
ENGAGING CULTURE
One major component of the meeting was discussion on engaging culture by using
resources like movies that raise relevant issues such as values,
moral concepts and eternal life. Ministry and entertainment leaders were able to
come together to create a strategy for using films as ministry and evangelism
tools. Pederson called the meeting a breakthrough in using the culture of film
to bring people to Christ, as ministries and movies moved from an adversarial
position to a synergistic relationship.
Films can be used effectively to engage culture and point people to Christ,
according to Sue Warner, Managing Editor for the Salvation Army's New Frontier
Publications. In the mid-1960's, Warner was impacted by the film "The Greatest
Story Ever Told." After viewing the film she went home and began reading the
Bible. As she "got to the parable of the Sower and the Seed. I knew that I was
the rocky ground seed, but I did not know how to change that. Then the Lord sent
someone to explain the plan of salvation. I believe that this movie will have
the same impact on thousands of people."
RESOURCING
Haan says the Burbank meeting was designed to help churches and ministries
prepare for the many people who will view the film and then have questions about
why Jesus suffered. "After they view the film," he said, "we want churches
equipped with resources to help people accept the blood of Jesus as an atonement
for their sins." Many ministries and organizations are now preparing resources
to assist Christians and churches in effectively using The Passion. Resources
include (among others):
- The Passion Toolbox -
www.thepassiontoolbox.com (Campus Crusade for Christ)
- Passion Outreach -
www.passionoutreach.com (Outreach, Inc.)
- Passion Materials -

(American Tract Society)
When asked how leaders could support the film, Gibson emphasized that, "the most
important thing Christians can do is to pray." Haan urges Christians to cover
Gibson and the film in prayer, even prayerwalking every theater where the film
will be shown and "enlisting every Christian to pray for five others they would
like to invite to see the film." Mary Griffith, Editor of EvangelicalNews.org
feels the entire Body of Christ needs to pray that the Lord will use the film
"to reach people all over the world of every tribe, tongue, and nation and to
call them to a true knowledge of Jesus the Christ."

4. RADICAL? INNOVATIVE? CONTAGIOUS?
>From: "Evangelism Online" <magazine@epicnow.org>
RADICAL OUTREACH
by George Hunter
Radical Outreach offers several helpful insights into church renewal. At the
core of his argument is our "apostolic challenge": the need to reach secular
people. This happens most powerfully as we attract individuals who are thought
to be "unreachable" or "hopeless." Apostolic ministry happens not only through
preaching and evangelism but also through relationships and conversation.
Apostolic ministry happens as the church takes on cultural relevance (without
changing the gospel itself) and as lay ministries are identified and
implemented. Hunter's discussion of cultural relevance is informed by the
disciplines of anthropology and missiology, and is a reminder that North
Americans live in a rich and diverse mission field. He sees lay ministry as the
source for empowering the apostolic mission, and he identifies a number of
prominent examples, from lay caregiving to new church development to short term
volunteers in mission experiences.

6. BROKENNESS
- WHAT IS IT REALLY?
>From: "David Mays" <davidmays@acmc.org>
>Book Notes by David Mays: www.davidmays.org
BROKENNESS: The Heart God Revives
Nancy Leigh DeMoss
Moody Press, 2002, 161 pp.
DeMoss is the host and teacher for Revive Our Hearts, an excellent radio program
for women. This looks like a nice little gift book but it packs a spiritual
wallop for those who are listening. A thoughtful study of this little book
could trigger a life transformation.
Beginning with the revival at the 1995 Campus Crusade Staff Meeting and the
story of a couple in conflict, DeMoss describes what happens when God breaks
through our pride and brings brokenness and humility.
Chapter 2 describes what brokenness is, a humble, contrite heart, being poor in
spirit, a choice, "the shattering of my self-will," "the stripping of
self-reliance." "It is saying Yes, Lord!’ —no resistance, no chaffing, no
stubbornness— simply submitting myself to His direction and will in my life." It
is "roof off" before God and "walls down" before others. (55-7)
The Bible records illustrations of people who were humbled before God. "The
difference was not so much in the magnitude of their sin but in their response
when confronted with their sin." Some excused themselves and blamed others.
Broken people don't care who finds out and have nothing to protect or lose.
(65-67)
What characterizes brokenness? DeMoss asks us to prayerfully read through a
series of contrasts between proud and broken people. For example, broken people
are conscious of their own spiritual need and failures more than of others..
They reverence, encourage and lift up those in authority as opposed to
criticizing. They think the best of others instead of being self-righteous.
They have a dependent spirit rather than an independent, self-sufficient spirit.
They are willing to yield their rights rather than demanding their rights.
They are motivated to serve others before themselves. They are faithful,
promote others, and eager for others to get the credit rather than being
self-conscious and driven to be appreciated. And so on.
Chapter 5 describes the blessings of brokenness. God draws near. New life is
released. Love and fellowship are deeper. Usefulness to God is made possible.
"Brokenness requires both God's initiative and our response." God may use the
Scripture, circumstances, or the body of Christ to shatter our stubborn
self-life. Our response is to get close enough to God to see ourselves in
contrast to his holiness. Rather than wait for God to break us, it is much
better to humble ourselves (I Pet 5:6) and acknowledge our spiritual need both
to God and to others. And to do whatever we know God wants us to do.
The author provides some concrete steps to respond to God's initiative.
Acknowledge your need to him. Discuss your need with another believer and ask
for their prayers and help with accountability. Humble yourself and seek
forgiveness from someone you have sinned against. And so on.

10. 2004 - WHAT'S
IN .. AND NOT
>From: <PTM@prayertransformation.com>
>At:
http://www.prayertransformation.com/
“What’s In and What’s Not in 2004”
This time of year, everyone has all kinds of predictions, best /worst dressed
lists, and what’s in and what’s not.
I thought it would be fun, yet intentional to send out a New Years
Transformational What’s In and What’s Not list. Have fun, but know the truths
are real. Give them some thought for this New Year.
What’s In - Kingdom Thinking
What’s Not – Self Preservation Thinking
What’s In – Servant Leadership
What’s Not – Serve Me Leadership
What’s In – Transformation can Happen Here!
What’s Not – Transformation only happens There!
What’s In – God rules every area of my life
What’s Not – God rules those areas of my life where it’s comfortable
What’s In – We can’t live another day without His Presence
What’s Not – Just so He doesn’t upset the status quo
What’s In – God uses the humble, broken and meek
What’s Not – God helps those who help themselves
What’s In – Believing God for the Major Breakthroughs
What’s Not – God hasn’t answered yet, maybe we expect too much
What’s In – God expresses Himself in creative new ways
What’s Not – Give me a God that be predictable (safe)
What’s In – We need to listen to what’s on God’s heart
What’s Not – Just show me the right program
What’s In – I need to know the vision of others to complete my vision
What’s Not – I alone have the true vision (of course I never really say it
that way)
I could go on and clog your inbox, but that’s enough for now anyway.
One quote I ran across that may fit some of you as we end one year and go into
the next- This from Samuel Rutherford (1600 – 1662), “Why should I tremble at
the plough of my Lord, that maketh deep furrows on my soul? I know He is no idle
husbandman; He purposeth A CROP.”
Have a blessed New Year and Keep Pressing in as you pray. The Goal line is just
ahead! Your servant in Christ, Steve Loopstra, Executive Director, Prayer
Transformation Ministries
