HOW THE NETWORK WORKS

What are the Local Networks?

Every youth worker should be within reach of a healthy local Network. Why? Because we're better together! God never intended that we do youth ministry in isolation We need each other.

In researching high-functioning local fellowships that have lasted and are making a difference in their communities, the Network has observed a pattern: they usually embody five "character qualities" that run as threads through the life or fabric of their Network. The more these threads are evident, the healthier they tend to be.

How much do you see these qualities in your local group? For more information and suggestions about how to weave them more effectively into your Network, go to the Coordinator Front Page at youthworkers.net and click on "Building 21st Century Networks" to walk through the video series online. The material includes interactive notes to help you apply the principles to your context.

PRAY
Get God's Heartbeat for Your Community

The Network that God uses is guided by leaders with callused knees. You cannot know how God wants you to fulfill the Great Commission in your community until you ask Him. His plan for your area has a unique DNA. You can't experience His power for the journey without receiving it in prayer. Prayer, alone and corporate, should be woven into all you do.

PURPOSE
Focus on the Target.

The target your Network is aiming for should be clear: the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20; Acts 1:8). God wants to prepare an army of students to reach their "Jerusalem": their school. The Network must unite behind and equip the body of Christ to reach this generation. Write a mission statement that clearly describes your purpose - why the Network exists.

PEOPLE
Build a Team Based on Relationships.

With the target established, build your network on two rails; first relationships, then strategies (events). Ministry flows through and from relationships. Develop trust by spending time together, especially praying for your community. As trust grows between you, allow God to reveal the particular events or strategies He wants you to utilize to hit your target. Keep your Network on track by maintaining a balance between the twin rails - relationship (who you are becoming) and strategy (what God leads you to do cooperatively). A train cannot travel on only one rail, except at Disneyland!

PLAN
Mobilize to Reach Your Community.

Decide what your Network will do - and what it won't do. Most successful Networks meet regularly (at least monthly), have well-planned meetings, and stick to their agenda. They strike a balance between resourcing, personal sharing/prayer, campus updates, vision casting, planning events, and group-building activities.  They try to include volunteers and paid youth workers.

PERSEVERE
Be Ready for a Battle!

A network's momentum ebbs and flows - don't be surprised when it happens to yours! Networks that last usually have a leadership team or steering committee instead of just one "Lone Ranger" Coordinator. Mature Networks realize they are in a spiritual battle, keep their focus on the target, work through obstacles, and are able to adapt to change. They reinvent themselves as necessary until they reach "every student in every school" in their target area.

Find a Local Network

INVITATION TO A CHRIST SUMMIT
with David Bryant

All pastors and Christian ministry leaders are invited to attend a CHRIST SUMMIT with international Christian leader, David Bryant, Friday January 7, 2005, 9:00am to 8:00pm, at Westminster Chapel in Bellevue (13646 NE 24th St.). There is no better way to begin 2005 than by Fixing our eyes on Jesus (Heb. 12:2)!

Some of you have attended previous Christ Roundtables or other meetings where David has spoken powerfully about the supremacy of Christ (the fullness of who Christ is, and who we can be in Him).  I have received many reports that the two-three hours David has proclaimed Christ in those gatherings have freshly awakened our hearts to Christ.  And, we hunger to hear more about Christ, discuss together how the Church of our region can become saturated with Christ, and unite in asking God to fulfill His plans for Christs kingdom to come and His will to be done in our beloved region!

So, the January 7, 2005 CHRIST SUMMIT will be designed for every possible pastor and ministry leader in our state (whether you have heard David speak before or not), to spend a full day:

David Bryant is the president of PROCLAIM HOPE!  For the past 30+ years, he has led city-wide rallies, spoken at national and international conferences, developed leadership coalitions. and produced regular TV and radio messages to help build the worldwide prayer movement.  His consistent contribution to this movement has been to help set its primary agenda: the abounding hope of a God-given awakening among all Christians to Christ for ALL that He is (Christs supremacy)!  David has been a mentor to me for 20+ years, and has impacted my relationship with Christ more than any other person.

Many of us have been laboring and praying for renewal, revival, awakening, transformation and the manifest presence of Christ in our region for years.  Davids messages on Christ will give you great hope that Christ is the fulfillment of all those prayers. Please come to the CHRIST SUMMIT and invite other pastors and ministry leaders to join you!

CAPITAL DISTRICT, NY: 23 PASTORS PRAYER GROUPS
>From:
pray.capitalregion@verizon.net

God has been laying the foundation for some significant spiritual transformation in the cities, towns and villages of our Capital District. Over the past five years or so pastors and their churches have begun to cooperate across denominational lines in unprecedented ways in the history of the region.  This progress has eventuated in 23 pastors prayer groups praying in the city and town halls with or for the mayors/town supervisors of the region.  The stories of how this occurred and the emerging results across this area need to be told for the encouragement of the church locally, statewide and beyond.  To that end we have begun filming our own record of the transformational stories resulting from this unprecedented unity.  The completion of this film in a timely fashion, however, now requires the raising of the remaining $8,000 for the production and then distribution of 500 dvd/vhs tapes.  Please pray with us for the completion and God-honoring results of this film and consider this need for financial support.  Due to the availability of our filmer/editor only through the end of November of this year, our window of opportunity to raise funds and complete this project is limited.  Funds may be sent to the Renewal Prayer
Network with a note that the donation is for the Capital Transformations film.

Thanking you in advance for your prayerful consideration and support of this important project for the greater church of the Capital Region, Curt Morgan - pcmjr@nycap.rr.com

"Howdy," "Hello," "Bula" from Fiji
Remarkable things - unbelievable things continue to happen across Fiji! Over the past three years, Fiji has become (in my opinion) the most remarkable story of God's transforming power to date. The Fijians are an amazing group of people to learn from. God has been impacting the nation of Fiji from the President, Prime Minister, down through the village chiefs and remote villages. Humility, repentance, reconciliation, unity, and forgiveness seem to be the "core biblical principles" of the Kingdom of God at work across Fiji - along with persevering leadership.

SANTA FE: PASTORS LEAD PRAYER FOR THE CITY
>From: "John Robb" <john_robb@wvi.org>

... A report on how your prayers were answered for Santa Fe. Thanks for your interest and prayer. It was a magnificent time with worship and music ministry teams from many different churches leading us throughout Sunday afternoon out on the open plaza. At one point, rain threatened to shut the whole thing down, but we just kept on going till the sun came out again. Perhaps 500-600 took part. Homeless people as well as weird and wild youth were also on hand to enjoy the free food and cheerful, fun ambience of the event. Someone had erected a sign with "JESUS" in large letters attached to the top of the bandstand, so everyone, both Christian and non-Christian knew what we were
about.

One high point was the troupe of charming eight to ten year-old girls who danced Hawaiian style in worship to the Lord. Other dancers and musicians performed, treating all to a display of the rich and diverse gifts the churches of the city can bring to such a combined celebration.

Another highlight was the Native American group that pounded their drums and spoke of reconciliation in spite of the wounds they have experienced. On that plaza, in centuries past, they were tortured and executed by Spanish conquerors who enslaved them and took their land. As they got ready to perform, a marvelous rainbow appeared across the horizon as if God were smiling ear to ear. I believe their leading us in worship was a significant spiritual milestone for the city and state.

The six-hour festival concluded with a moving candlelight service in the chill autumn air. Pastors and ministry leaders from the whole spectrum of denominations took turns leading us in prayer for the city, our nation and for the nations as the crowd clustered around the bandstand, candles flickering in the thickening darkness.

We hope to make this celebration of praise at least an annual celebration for the City of Holy Faith. The Christian leaders will begin to meet together next Tuesday to pray for the city and one another's ministries, hopefully continuing every month. Some of us believe that this is just the beginning of the special things the Lord intends for this, the oldest and highest capital in America. Thanks so much for your prayers to this end.

HAWAII: 497,350 HOMES

Jesus Video Project America
Praise and Prayer Calendar September 2004
<http://www.jesusvideo.org>

THE WORK GOES ON
In April of 2003, people in 497,350 homes in Hawaii received JESUS videos in the mail as gifts from nearly 200 partnering churches. Many diverse denominations scattered throughout the islands worked together to share the wonderful news of the gospel. At the same time, Youth for Christ co-labored with Campus Crusade to help fulfill the vision of reaching every home on the islands for Jesus Christ.
Pastor Jim Tweedie of Mililani Presbyterian Church on the island of Oahu is a member of the Follow-Up Committee. He was inspired to have small metal badges made and dispersed that said, "Got Video?" and "Watched Video?"  These two questions have helped spur conversations about Jesus around the islands. Pastor Tweedie explained that his involvement with the JESUS video goes back approximately seven years ago when he created a discipleship curriculum using the video. He said that the JESUS video is a very effective living Bible that he has used in class settings for people who know very little about the Bible and are preparing to join the church. During the JESUS Hawaii Project, his church had an evening showing of JESUS, as well as The Story of Jesus for Children.  Pastor Tweedie was struck by the rapt attention of the children, who rarely sit still, as they watched and heard the gospel. Mililani Presbyterian Church gave videos to any new people who attended the church block party held at the end of summer, and continues to give out JESUS videos to visitors at their church. Pray for Hawaii as the work goes on to bring the message of Jesus to all people.

MILWAUKEE, WI: NEW IDEAS FOR A CITY RESISTANT TO CHANGE
>From: roger@cityvoices.com

Milwaukee and its churches can be proud of much. The city and its faith institutions have held the traditional line and weathered many jolts during a generation of economic and social change. Tough, industrial-style church buildings, both Catholic and Protestant, still dot Milwaukee's cityscape and continue to teach and preach the gospel to ethnic-immigrant people far different from their German-Polish founders.

But now is a time for new ideas in a city that has been best known for its resistance to change. Beer, bratwurst and motorcycles can (and are) made most anywhere within the network of global cities. As a current analysis states, "Without fundamental changes, its [Milwaukee's] economy will become more like Detroit and less like Minneapolis." (George Lightbourn and Stephen J. Agostini, "Building a New Milwaukee Economy," January 2004)

Milwaukee's high-water mark was 1960 when the population peaked at 741,000. Schlitz, Miller and Blatz brewed beer for the entire Midwest, Allen-Bradley churned out machine parts for the world and the "Johnny-come-lately" Braves had just captured two National League pennants. These were heady days for one of America's most ethnically homogenous cities. But a decline was about to hit, hard and fast.

By 1970, population was down to 717,000, by 1980 - 636,000, and by 1990 - 628,000. 2003 estimates indicate that Milwaukee's numbers have now fallen all the way to 586,000. For more than a generation, Milwaukee has lost people, lost jobs, and lost a vision for the future. But Milwaukee's churches and the beliefs they stand for may prove to be the city's salvation - spiritually, educationally and economically.

What follows is a collection of CityVoices interviews with pastors, educators and entrepreneurs who are working to bring about change at the most fundamental levels of Milwaukee's society. Read about St. Anthony's School, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Holy Cathedral Church of God in Christ, Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church & School and The Milwaukee Outreach Center. Discover a few signs of hope (for your city as well) as they lead the struggle to re-make Old Milwaukee.

YAKIMA, WA:  3000 PEOPLE FROM 60 CONGREGATIONS
>From: "Rick Harpel" <rick@wsbcyakima.org>

The evangelical  churches of Yakima will be coming together again this year  in our Sundome downtown.  We did this last year on a Sunday morning   for worship in June and had between 6500 and 7000 people from over  50  churches.  This year, we are moving from worship to  witness, or  passion to purpose and have John Dawson coming as our  speaker.  The  challenge is for us to commit together to seek  transformation for our  community and the advance of the  gospel.

Below is a copy of what we read responsively at this year's Sunday Together.  We held the event in the afternoon instead of Sunday morning.  We had more churches involved, over 60, but about 1/2 the total number of people at the event compared to last year.  We figured our attendance was about 3000-3500.

Thanks, Rick Harpel

SOLEMN COVENANT OF THE CHURCHES OF YAKIMA MAY 23, 2004

Leader: Whereas the Lord calls his people to repentance:

People: If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14

Leader: Whereas we are gathered by the Holy Spirit, who calls the Lords people together:

People: And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. Ephesians 2:22

Leader: We take this opportunity as part of his Body in Yakima to declare this solemn covenant.

People: As God allows by the power of his Spirit, we will continue to make the confession of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and salvation in his name the central focus of our common faith.

Leader: Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:9-11

People: We will treat one another in the Body of Christ with honor, even though we have differences.

Leader: Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3:12-14

People: We will announce the reason for the hope within us with gentleness and respect.

Leader: But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. 1 Peter 3:15

People: We will pursue opportunities to not simply build our own churches but to build His Church, praying for the advance of His kingdom.

Leader: Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:10

People: We will pray for those in authority in our churches, our community, our local governments and our nation.

Leader: I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone--for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 1 Timothy 2:1-2

People: We will consider how we might pursue reconciliation and cooperation with others in our valley.
Leader: If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Romans 12:18

All: To these resolutions we give ourselves this day in Jesus name.  Amen.
