*      A NOTE FROM PHIL

Here in Chicago, we are preparing for our second City Impact Roundtable this year and I sense a Spirit-inspired momentum!

The demand for a 2nd CIR, an unprecedented gathering of strategic gatekeepers later this fall, a national ministry offering to assist our work for city transformation, and even this morning, a report that the City of Chicago may work more closely with the Salvation Army ...

Praying Christians will see this as the Lord answering prayers; some lifted decades ago!

And if in one city, would he not be stirring similar intersections of prayer and opportunity in other cities ... in  yours?

Now is the time to reflect, not on our unrealized plans of the past, but on His emerging plans. Those are the hopes and dreams we must unite for prayer and action,

Phil

1.    PASTORS' PRAYER GROUP:  "ARE WE QUALIFIED?"

Phil,     Do I need to know or do anything specific in order to be considered a PPG?  Another pastor and I meet each week to pray for each other, our churches and the Spirit's moving in our community.  I'm wondering if that 'qualifies'?          Pastor Darrell

NPPNote---> Two or three gathered in His name is always a good beginning and a strong foundation. For lessons learned by those who have gone before, look over some of the PPG articles on the NPPN site: @ http://www.nppn.org/articles.htm

P.S. And don't forget to add your PPG (or revise info) to the NPPN PPG Directory @ http://www.nppn.org/PPG%20Page.htm

2.    EL PASO, TX & JUAREZ, MX:  CITY IMPACT ROUNDTABLE
>From: "Laurie Huffman" <lauriehuf@sbcglobal.net>

We had a great CIR yesterday (10/5) with  different members of the convening team leading the meeting  segments.

I feel  like the main purpose at this point is to gather together, impart the vision  for the CIR and keep building the relationships. They are getting it too.

Forty-one showed  up, including new pastors from El Paso and Juarez, plus other spiritual  leaders. After the welcome, we had a prayer time for the different cities,  the elections (our Republican Party city leader was there), America and  Mexico. It was good. We had a ministry testify of the blessing of partnering  together. A convening team pastor reviewed the meeting with you on July 9.  Another convening team pastor led us into the roundtable discussion. Then  Pat McGrath, of  Fellowship of Companies for Christ, Int. had us  stop and ask God what He was speaking to us as he convened the roundtable  conclusions. Results of the tables were shared. The meeting ended by having  the general manager of our Christian television station share so that  prayer could be made as they enter their telethon.

I believe we were  blessed and the interest for this will grow. Two hours went quickly, in  fact, we were a bit rushed. But we started almost on time and ended on time.

God bless and  thanks for your input, Laurie

St. Louis City Impact Roundtable October 19 and 20

City Impact Roundtable ... those who have a heart for impacting our St. Louis region, a willingness to relate to others in the body of Christ "across the lines,"  who want to be an answer to Jesus prayer in John 17:20-24 .  Please share this invitation -- including the forwarding of this email -- on to them.

God is doing  marvelous works in our St. Louis region.   With great regularity He amazes us at the different expressions of what He is doing. And He clearly wants to expand His impact here...through us.  And everybody is "somebody" -- designed for special places and functions -- in the body of Christ. But none of us "has it all."  So we need each other.  Each of us is a different part of His body.  Together we make up His local body.

You are invited to join us in our St. Louis CIR.  Join us in bringing it before God in prayer.  And join us in "enlarging the tent" with special invitations to believers who are servant leaders among racial and ethnic minorities. In some cases, yours will be the only means of their knowing that they are wanted. Indeed, we so desire that our CIR broadly reflect the entire body of Christ.  Please help us make it happen.

Get more information, and even register, on line.  Because Jesus Loves Us, and Gave Us Some Orders (Matthew 28:19, 20),

9.    CLEVELAND, TN:   UNITY IS GOD'S IDEA
>From: emailupdate@spiritualrenewal.net

In the Christian world today there is a great deal of emphasis upon unity - The scriptural principle that the Body of Christ is one, that  there is one church, that Paul truly was inspired when he wrote the Ephesians that "we are all one body, we have the same Spirit  and we have all been called to the same glorious future" (4:4,  NLT). It seems finally to be dawning on Christians that if we are  going to be together in heaven, it makes practical, as well as theological,  sense that we ought to make an effort to get together down here.  It is hard to imagine that Christ would come for a Church that is so fragmented, conflictual and contentious.

The idea of scriptural unity has been a major part of the vision of the Center for Spiritual Renewal from its inception. Through major solemn assemblies and historic leadership relational retreats, we have tried to provide forums to help emphasize and facilitate the  unity of the Body. Many other church ministries, agencies, and denominations have caught the vision of unity. But the fact of the matter is that  this emphasis upon unity is not the idea of any group or individual;  it is God's idea. It has been His plan from the beginning. However, lately He seems to be underscoring its importance universally in very significant ways. It is a message to which every believer must  give a positive response.

Unity Is the Christian's Responsibility

When we speak of unity in the Body of Christ, we are not talking about organizational, ecclesiastical or doctrinal unity, but rather "the  unity of the Spirit in the body of Peace" (Ephesians 4:3). True unity always has a spiritual base. The spiritual aspect of unity  must precede that of the social and psychological.

In that respect, the first responsibility of a Christian in promoting and practicing unity is to be in right relationship with God-to have  spiritual integrity. To come together with others, especially in  sensitive situations, is not possible from a purely human standpoint.  It takes the understanding and strength of a spiritually changed  heart.

There are other practical considerations in achieving unity. There  must be intentionality. That means a consistent reaching out through  prayer, attitude and personal contact. There also must be a willingness  to submit, to be flexible in position and attitude. Finally, there  must be an understanding of and a respect for the beliefs, values  and experiences of others. Unity among His children is the will of God. It is the responsibility  of those children to fulfill that will.

10.    REPORT:  MIDWEST VETERAN CITY REACHER'S RETREAT

Veteran City Reacher Retreat
By Tony Danhelka

I drew a circle with a radius of 250 miles or 5 hours driving time from Chicago.  The circle included Grand Rapids, Toledo, Ft Wayne, Indianapolis, Springfield, Bloomington, Peoria, Davenport, Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Madison, Milwaukee and Rockford.  Primarily 12 cities in all.

Let me back up for a minute...
In 1976 we were part of the founding activities of a new ministry called Riverwoods Christian Center.  We minister in economically stressed housing communities around two cities called Aurora and Elgin in Illinois.  We are headquartered in a 85 acre Christian Camp along the Fox River just North of St. Charles, IL.  We work closely with some 70 churches in our region of about 450 churches.  However, we sadly moved along realizing that these local churches often seemed fragmented at best and divisive to one another at worst.

In 1997 the Lord started introducing my wife and I to City Reaching or better said City Transformation principles during a trip to Argentina with Evangelist Ed Silvoso.  Since then we have had occasion to travel nationally to over 20 cities to observe and research City Reachers in action.

It became obvious to us that the Lord God was raising up Servant Leaders in most of the major cities of the nation and world.  God was raising up men and women with a passion burning in them to call local church pastors to broaden their scope and begin pastoring the city.  God's heart is that none would parish and that all should be given an opportunity to come to Christ.  These workers started to be known as City Reachers calling the church of their city to united repentance, prayer, evangelism and justice for the poor.

The Lord started to prompt me to identify veteran city reachers in our 250 mile radius region.  He then led me to contact them and exchange ideas with them.  A few simple steps later and we were contacting Retreat Centers close to the hub... Chicago, so we could meet together for a few days.

Early in the process we had to discover a definition of what we meant by a Veteran City Reacher.  It seemed as though city reachers had the some similarities in their strategies and profiles.  After some trial and error we came up with this definition:

A Veteran City Reacher is:
1. Someone (man or woman) who has been giving at least half of their working time to calling pastors to come together at least monthly for prayer, evangelism and social justice issues of their city.

2. Someone who has a five year or more track record of bridging denominational, cultural and gender lines to call the Christian church together in their city.

3. Someone who lives in the city and region they are calling together.

We had no intention of forming an elite group of Veterans that excluded new comers.  Our intention was to identify those who are struggling with the similar issues and being resilient enough to preserver for more than 5 years.  We hope to learn from each other so we could be used of God to train and develop newcomers to this new "City Reaching Calling" of faith.

The Lord had already led me to about five "City Reachers" from five cities in the circle.  I phoned and emailed them with the idea of getting away for a two or three day retreat together with our spouses.  I asked if they knew of any other Veteran City Reachers that met the basic criteria and if they knew of any retreat centers or hotels that may be central to the Chicago area.

Much to my delight the five expanded my list to some twelve possible Veteran City Reachers.  They also gave me ideas of about ten retreat centers that specifically provide a "Haven of Rest" for pastors.

We then emailed and phoned the twelve and started organizing some dates.  At first we wanted to try a Sunday Night through Tuesday noon.  However, many of the couples encouraged us to focus on a full weekend.  They shared that their spouses worked in other carriers and really wanted to attend.

After many emails and phone calls we were able to find a couple with Broom Tree Ministries who had access to a historic Mansion on a near by Lake in Geneva, Wisconsin.  They were willing to provide the weekend lodging and food at no charge for our group.

Four of the ten couples were able to work out their schedules for the weekend that became the most available.

We met on a Friday evening for supper.  The hosting couple served us a delightful dinner and led us in introductory discussions about our general City Reaching activities.

We then adjourned to the parlor and started going around the group sharing our individual stories of where we grew up, how we came to know Christ, how we entered into City Reaching
.
We purposely did not stay up late talking.  The hosting couple encouraged us to get much rest over the weekend.  We needed it!

We did spend a time in group prayer and adjourned by 9:30PM Friday.

Breakfast was cereal, fruit and bakery.  We did not reconvene as a group till 10AM to allow time to sleep in and let each couple spend time together with the Lord.  During the three: two hour group times on Saturday we allowed each couple to share their City Reaching style and journey in detail.

Saturday night was our Worship time.  It was sweet.

The hosting couple did a simple yet unique exercise during one of the meals on Saturday.  They just asked us to share funny and even somewhat embarrassing moments in ministry that we remember.  It was a blast as we laughed until it hurt.  Great stories and great joy.  What a release.

Sunday morning was similar to Saturday.  When we met as a group we started discussing themes that emerged like:
* What do you do to raise money?

*  How do you respond when pastors confirm that they support the City Reaching vision but they are too busy to participate?

*How do you develop a Board of Directors?

* When do you breakaway for times with the Lord?  How do you bring Market Place business leaders into the movement?

We ended by evaluating the weekend and discussing our desires to meet again.  It seemed important to meet as couples as much as possible.  Many in the group wanted to meet longer from Sunday night to Friday noon at a Retreat Center big enough to handle 12 couples.  We hope to meet in the late fall and welcome in more Veteran City Reachers to the circle.
