1.    A KEY TO CITY REACHING

Study shows Protestant ministers want more cooperation among denominations....
(In Illinois Baptist Wednesday, January 21, 2004  Vol. 98 No. 02)

Phoenix, Ariz.  Just how "denominational" are denominational churches in the United States? Newly released survey results show that most Protestant church pastors are committed to their denomination but also frustrated at the lack of agreement within their own denomination, as well as the lack of interdenominational cooperation.
Results from the study, conducted by Ellison Research of Phoenix, Ariz., among a nationally representative sample of 567 Protestant ministers, are being released for the first time in the January/February issue of the magazine Facts & Trends, which is published by LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. The research was independently funded and conducted by Ellison Research and included churches from all Protestant denominations.
Ron Sellers, president of Ellison Research...pointed out that pastors are the ones who must make inter-church cooperation work. "The vast majority of ministers wanted more cooperation among churches of different denominations, but that level of cooperation will not happen just by hoping or desiring. The pastors themselves will have to make this happen. Maybe knowing that there's a strong chance other ministers in their community also want more inter-church cooperation will encourage that cooperation to take place."
More detailed information on the study is available at www.ellisonresearch.com <http://www.ellisonresearch.com>

Seven Steps to Maximize Cohesiveness
Step 1:    Begin to pray for your neighbors.
Step 2:    Ask your family to join you.
Step 3:    Enlist your paid staff to do it.
Step 4:    Challenge your paid staff to have their families join in.
Step 5:    Invite your unpaid staff to do it.
Step 6:    Enlist the families of your unpaid staff
the same way you did in step 4.
Step 7:    All the pastors in your group should bring their congregations together for a
        time of testimony and celebration.

Reaching a city for Christ is important, but it pales in comparison to drawing near to Jesus. Our objective cannot be to reach a city; it must be intimacy with Jesus. If we are going to walk on water, it cannot be to display our faith but to draw closer to Him. Whether we reach a city or not, our driving passion has to be intimacy with the Lord.
If we draw near to Jesus, we will then bring Him into the boat, the wind will stop, and those who were paralyzed by fear will declare, "You are certainly God's Son!" (Matthew 14:33) - a definite improvement from "He is a ghost!" Better yet, the boat will not turn back to the shore from where we sailed but, instead, it will cross over to Gennesaret, the place we almost turned our backs on when the storm hit. And the people there will touch Jesus and as many as touch Him will be cured (see vv.34-36)
Can you imagine how differently things would have turned out if the disciples, with their proven dislike of crowds, would have made it to Gennesaret ahead of Jesus? They may have dismissed the people or allowed only a few to see Jesus. Instead, because of the storm, they learned a valuable lesson and arrived in Gennesaret to see people and a region transformed.
This is the beauty of trials. They force us to exchange our good things for His excellence. They teach us how to face the devil in God's power by rendering our power useless. We soon learn that we can only overcome the adversary in the power of the resurrection made real by the faith that Jesus preserved for us. And when everything is said and done, we know that the only thing that counts is Jesus. It is not what we do for Him. It is Him. Only Him.
When we finally stand before the judgment seat of Christ, each of us will stand alone. No one else will take our place when our turn comes to face the Lord. No other Christians, no other pastors, no other city reachers - just Christ and me. It is my desire, and I pray it becomes my ambition also, that on that day I will be drawn to Him by the consuming desire to embrace the One who embraced me when I was lost; that this desire would be so rooted in me that when He goes down the list of things for which He is pleased with me, I will be a perplexed as the righteous described in Matthew 25:37-40 who did so much for Jesus without realizing it.
How can a person give water to the thirsty, feed the hungry and visit prisoners, and not realize that he or she is doing these things to Jesus? Because when we are so focused on Him and Him alone, the doing does not matter. It is being with Him that counts, and when we are with Him, Passionately in love with Him, we always take care of those He came to seek and save.
If we are so focused on Jesus and Him alone, the storm around us will die down, and multitudes will confess that He is certainly God's Son. They will do it not because of our expertise, but because of our dependence on Him.
Let us make Jesus our only consuming passion. Then, and only then, will we be ready to see our cities transformed.

3.    CITY EMERGENCY NETWORK

Christian Emergency Network Urges Community Preparedness.

Christian Emergency Network (CEN), the new crisis information
cooperative volunteer service of Mission America Coalition (MAC) partners,
is now poised and ready to respond to domestic crises.  The objective of CEN is to lead Christians (individuals, ministries, and media) to speak clearly and minister effectively during a national calamity.  CEN's mission is to help people intelligently pray for, sensitively care for, and strategically
share the gospel with victims' families, friends, and neighbors involved in
American emergencies.  Working with such partners as Campus Crusade for Christ, the Salvation Army, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Luis
Palau Evangelistic Association, National Prayer Committee, CBN-TV, Salem
Radio Network, Family Life Radio, We Care America, and Zondervan,
www.ChristianEmergencyNetwork.com provides coordinated information about relief training, mobilization, crisis counseling, evangelistic tools, and
other resources, as well as timely messages from ministry leaders, Christian media programming, and news.

According to Rev. Glenn A. Barth, National Facilitator of City and
Community Ministries for MAC, and Co-Chair of CEN, "CEN will serve as a
central hub for Christian media, organizations, churches, and others who're seeking comprehensive Christian resources and reaction to the crisis."  CEN is looking for hundreds of local leaders who will serve as the contact in their cities to report when needed to CEN on preparedness training and how that city is responding in the event of a major disaster. "It's my hope that at this National Leadership Forum we'll recruit 75-100 new city contacts for CEN," Barth says.  Contact Barth at glenn@missionamerica.org to register your interest in becoming a CEN reporter.

CEN is activated in full when an event occurs that causes national
media to broadcast news coverage continuously and when many lives in the U.S. are affected.  In other emergencies, CEN monitors the situation and makes its members aware of ministry opportunities.  CEN's Flash News Email Service is the primary method CEN uses to communicate important and urgent news to Christians as it's happening.  The service is free and can be subscribed to by going to www.ChristianEmergencyNetwork.com

5.    CONVERSATIONS: YOUR REPLY IS REQUESTED...

You can not read the gospels and not be forced to consider building relational bridges through ministry over which you intentional share the gospel.  Whether it is with a woman at a well in Sychar or a lame man by the Pool of Siloam, Jesus met the needs of people and in the process people were introduced to the Messiah.  Recently a pastor reflected over a prior pastorate and the growth that came when his church did ministry evangelism in a multifamily housing project ten miles away and the people reached were in a church start.  His current church was not relevant to its community and was slowly loosing members.  He knew the answer, making a priority of ministry evangelism so the congregation could connect to the lost in the community in meaningful ways.

The Ministry Evangelism Team at the North American Mission Board has identified four basic types of churches: 1. The pastor is more concerned with surviving the ministry than leading his church to do ministry. 2. The pastor follows a model in which he, (and staff) are hired by the church to do ministry evangelism on behalf of the church. With each action of the pastor, the church applauds his work and encourages him to do more. 3. The pastor understands the Biblical mandate for ministry evangelism to be  a church-wide assignment but the congregation is unwilling to take up the mantle of ministry. 4.  Both the pastor and the congregation understand the Biblical mandate to do church-wide ministry evangelism and are seeking the LORD's leading.

We believe help for the pastor is one issue we must address if churches are to utilize ministry evangelism as a component of their plan to carry out the great Commission.  Response to the four types of churches we've identified needs to be practical and born in experience.  What we are looking are answers to several questions:
    1.   Do you think the four descriptions are representative of most churches in North America?  Yes / No (Indicate with an X)
    2.  If you encountered pastors in one or more of the four, what obstacle(s) does he face and what should the pastor do to overcome the problem?
    3.  If you were to classify your own church in one of the four, which most describes your situation?

6.    TRANSFORMATION CINCINNATI & NO. KENTUCKY

Transformation Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky is made up of the people in the Cincinnati area that are inviting God to touch our city, the places where we work, and the places where we live. We are people who come from all types of backgrounds; working people, students, pastors, mothers, fathers, all walks of life; people who represent all ethnic groups, cultures, and races; nameless and faceless Christians wanting to join with other like minded believers in this region. This is a spiritual transformation led by God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

Some help administratively, facilitate prayer and planning meetings, or organize events and outreach efforts. Others support this transformation by harnessing their personal resources in their businesses, churches, and vocations. There are many pastors or church leaders involved in this process helping to provide a spiritual covering and building unity. Please join us in this effort by reviewing the
social contract.

The Message is Simple
   1. We only have one enemy, and it is not each other.  Lets focus on God the Father, Jesus His Son, and the Holy Spirit.
    2. God wants us to come together in unity, not uniformity.
    3. .A leader is someone who puts aside his own agenda and takes on a greater agenda of service to others.
    4. Love God Love each other.  Quit focusing on crime and race and economic issues and turn to God for answers
    5. Every sinner has a future, and every saint has a past.  Because of this, we must learn to forgive each other, accept God's forgiveness and forgive ourselves.
   6.  Psalm 42:5 "Why are you cast down...hope in God."  Cincinnati is a "cast down" city for which we need to pray.

Transformation Cincinnati & Northern Kentucky is not a group or a ministry, its a process.

Mission Statement
: to honor and glorify God in all that we do.

Purpose: to facilitate uniting God's people, businesses, churches, government, and schools through prayer, plans, and actions to spread the good news of Jesus through this city, region and country.

Vision: that Cincinnati and northern Kentucky be transformed into a Christ-centered city of prayer that provides refuge for all people.

8.    CHICAGO OPPORTUNITIES

PRAYERWALK FROM CHICAGO TO IRELAND
>From: m.coppenger@comcast.net
The Baptist Collegiate Ministry group at Northwestern University is planning a spring break trip to western Ireland, March 20-28. The missionaries on the ground over there want us to major on prayerwalking.  We're going to the Gaelic-speaking people on the rugged and beautiful west coast. I was over there in 2002, and I found it stunning -- and very spiritually needy. We're facing a strange blend of Catholicism and superstition, where there is any spiritual interest at all. Cost per person will be between $1000 and $1500. Perhaps others are interested in joining with us.

PRAYER SUMMIT
FOR PASTORS + MINISTRY & MARKETPLACE LEADERS
On April 19th through the 21st in Cedar Lake, Indiana, we will be seeking God, His kingdom, and His righteousness through prayer, worship, and fellowship. It is a call for the spiritual leaders of Chicagoland to set aside their agendas and meet at the foot of the cross. This will be a life-changing experience, attended by followers of Christ from all denominations, cultures, and walks of life.

9.    NEW YORK STATE PRAYER SUMMIT MODEL

TRANSFORMING the EMPIRE STATE

NEW YORK STATE PRAYER SUMMIT
For Leadership Teams of Pastors Prayer Groups
And for persons called to organize and lead such groups
01-04 MARCH 2004

THE NYS PRAYER SUMMIT FOR LEADERSHIP TEAMS OF PASTORS PRAYER GROUPS has been called by God to encourage, impart vision and equip Christian leaders to work toward the transformation of their local communities, and all of New York State, through networking, relationship building, fervent strategic prayer and spiritual warfare. This Summit is for current leaders and for persons called to organize and/or lead pastors prayer groups. Such prayer leaders need not be pastors themselves.

THE VISION
God is calling His church in New York State (NYS) to a higher level of living in Him than we have ever experienced before. Transformational revival will come to NYS imminently if Gods prayer warriors keep pursuing Gods Kingdom. This revival will spread from NYS to the nation and to the nations.
God has extended His scepter and invited us to ask Him for whatever we want for His Kingdoms sake (cf. Esther 5:1-3) and for His glory. In order to break the strongholds of darkness across NYS, God is calling forth faithful prayer ministry leaders, intercessors, watchmen and gatekeeper churches and cities that will not compete but that will link with each other using the technology available today. No longer will we pray in ignorance. No longer will we pray as islands. God is linking like-minded visionaries and leaders in prayer ministry and calling us to build relationships with each other statewide in order to pray strategically.
Pastors who are catching this vision must be bold, give leadership and pastor other pastors. It is time to be the Church in a different way than before!

EXPECTATIONS and PREPARATION
It is expected that everyone who attends is willing to receive and act on the vision stated above and is willing to receive and act on further vision that may come from God at the Summit. You should arrive prayed up; having asked God to meet us and to have his way and having asked your church to pray for us throughout the Summit. You are also encouraged to participate in a 24 hour fast for the Summit prior to your arrival. -- Some participants may be tempted not to be present for the entire Summit. The full blessing of the Summit is not realized if one comes late, or leaves early, and therefore, we urge every participant to set these four days completely aside from other scheduled activities. Also, it is expected that everyone who attends will have viewed the two Transformation videos that have been produced by The Sentinel Group (You may order these videos at 1-800-668-5657 or on line at www.TransformNations.com).

WHAT TO BRING
Dress is casual. Be prepared for weather that can vary from winter-like to spring-like. Bring a Bible, a notebook and a heart hungry to know God and to experience His revival.

10.    THE HOUSTON MODEL

Publicity is being distributed regarding the 2004 Greater Houston Area Pastors' Prayer Summit.  That publicity has generated questions.  The first question is, "what is a pastors' prayer summit?"

Answer:  It is a gathering for the pastoral leaders of the congregations and ministries in the Greater Houston area.  During our time together our goal is to pray, to meet with God, to seek God's agenda for His Church in this city, and to link the leaders of ministries (regardless of our church affiliations or cultural background) in relationships which will continue and deepen after the Summit.

One of the strategies the enemy uses to foster ineffectiveness in the church is that he works to keep leaders isolated, lonely, and self-focused.  When pastors participate in the Prayer Summit, they combat this enemy of the strategy.

If you are a pastoral leader in a congregation or ministry and would like to participate in the Prayer Summit, hit reply to this email and give your name, church name, mailing address, and fax number.  Your registration confirmation will be faxed to you along with an invoice.  Details regarding the summit are listed below.

Greater Houston Area Pastors Prayer Summit 2004

11.    WHY BRING A PRAYER SUMMIT TO YOUR CITY?
>From: "Jay Richmond" <pray.capitalregion@verizon.net>

Andrew Murray said that "God rules the nations [and their cities] by the prayers of the saints." The implications of that are tremendous, but the church is living far below its potential in this regard.  Mac gives some great illustrations of the power of this statement from their work in NYC.  He said that in 1992 NYC was given the notorious distinction of being the murder capital of the USA.  In 1995 they started The Lord's Watch - 30 - 40 churches in NYC who agreed to divide up the responsibility to pray 24-7 for the needs of their city.  They have been doing it ever since that time, and the amazing thing is that during the time that the Prayer Watch has been in effect, crime in NYC has decreased 70% and it was recently declared the safest large city in the USA.  There it is!  It IS true.  God DOES rule the nations and their cities through the prayers of the saints.  Most churches of the cities of America just haven't put that truth to the test, and as a result the cities of America are suffering for the church's slumber."  Quote taken from "The Power of a City at Prayer" by Mac Pier

There is great value in God's economy to seek Him corporately. Psalm 133:
 1.    Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity!
 2.    It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aaron, Running down on the edge of his garments.
 3.    It is like the dew of Hermon, Descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the Lord commanded the blessing Life forevermore.
